A new Friendship

**Peter’s Perspective**

The next day, I headed to class alone, and as soon as I walked in, all eyes were on me. It was clear that everyone was still talking about what happened yesterday.

Honestly, I wasn't too keen on coming to school today. That's why I slept in later than usual and initially told Alex to go ahead without me. But then, I had a change of heart.

Taking a deep breath, I walked to the backseat, ignoring the curious glances. Surprisingly, even Sean and his gang stayed silent.

It was incredible how the brave move from the girl who stood up for me yesterday shut everyone up. I took my seat just in time for the lecture to begin.

Scanning the room, I spotted my mysterious defender sitting at the front. I wondered who she was and thought I should probably thank her for what she did.

Glancing towards Angelica’s seat, who smiled brightly at me. My heart skipped a beat, ‘Oh my God! She smiled at me’ I don’t know how t react to that, so, all I could do was smile back.

The lecture started, and I noticed the new girl packing her things. "Is she leaving already? But the teacher is still teaching, is that allowed?" I wondered as she stood up.

I wasn't the only one who noticed. She surprised everyone by walking to the backseat, right where I was. "She can't possibly be thinking of sitting beside me, is she?"

"Is everything alright, Miss Nelsons?" the lecturer asked.

"No sir, everything is fine. Please go on," she replied as she took the seat next to me, causing the whole class to murmur. "Alright, keep it down. Let's move to the next topic," the lecturer said.

"Hi again," she said, smiling at me. It caught me off guard, and all I could do was smile back.

"Hi, thanks for defending me yesterday. That was surprising, and I really appreciate it," I managed to say, breaking the silence.

Her response reflected a deeper philosophy: "You don't have to thank me. It shouldn't be happening in the first place. No one deserves to be treated that way. We are all humans," she replied.

"I'm not sure we all are, given my experience. Most are just wolves in sheep's clothing with devious acts," I said, and she chuckled softly, understanding the double entendre.

"Maybe you're right, but I meant everything I said yesterday."

"I know it must be very difficult to understand, but I just want to look out for you because that is who I am. If you want me to leave, I can," she offered.

"It's alright. You can stay," I replied, and she sat back down.

"I totally forgot to introduce myself yesterday, pardon me," she said, turning to me. "Hi, I'm Amy Nelson. Nice to meet you."

"Peter Campbell, nice to meet you too," I replied, and we shook hands with smiles on our faces.

Engrossed in our discussion, we forgot about the lecturer, and he interrupted us, saying, "Sorry to interrupt you two lovebirds. Am I boring you?"

The class laughed, and I didn't mind. In fact, I laughed too. "I'm so sorry, sir," we apologized sincerely.

"Why don't you two stand up and bail yourselves out by answering this question," he said, pointing to the chemical reaction on the board.

“Explain how the law of conservation of mass is illustrated in this chemical reaction.”

I could feel the whole class staring at us, but I wasn't scared because I knew the answer.

"The law of conservation of mass states that mass is neither created nor destroyed in a chemical reaction. In the given combustion reaction of propane, the number of atoms of each element on both sides of the equation must be the same to satisfy this law," I answered, bringing a smile to the lecturer's face.

"Good, now sit down and don't disturb my class again," he replied, continuing his teaching. Amy nudged me and whispered, "Nice one, genius." I smiled back at her.

We returned our attention to the lecture on stoichiometry. Today's class was the first one I really enjoyed, having peace without pressure or bullying. For the first time in this school, I had peace of mind.

After the lecture, the teacher left, signifying the end of the class. Amy and I were discussing the topic when I noticed Sean and his cohorts approaching.

I stopped talking, turning to them. "It's alright, Peter," Amy said, then faced them. "What do you want?" she asked, glaring.

"You know after your short performance yesterday, I looked you up. You're Amy Nelson, the only heir to your parents' fortune," Sean said, standing in front of her.

"Considering what happened to your parents, you don't need someone like him beside you. You don't want to be seen with him," he added, making me wonder about her parents.

"I'd appreciate it if you could stop poking your nose in my family and mind your business. I'm a grown-up woman, and I'll be with whoever I want," she retorted, making him slightly angry.

"If you keep hanging around with the class pest, you'll be seen as one. That's not maturity; it's childishness," he said.

"Oh really, bullying people for fun? Would you consider that maturity? If that's not stupidity, I don't know what is," she replied, causing everyone to react with a collective 'uhhh.'

"And please, don't give anyone a false belief that you're doing this for me. You're only doing this so Angelica can notice you. She refused to be your girlfriend, probably realizing the kind of guy you are," she added, shocking everyone.

The whole class laughed at him for the revelation, and he stormed out angrily. 'I'm liking this girl already.'
