Chapter 17: Academy Begins

The Next Morning

I woke up early to do routine body exercises. Though I can increase my stats with points, if I stay lazy and don’t do things, my body will go stiff. I’ll become a statue that moves in one direction.

I would be the easiest moving target in history.

It’s not the only reason, I should keep up appearances. If I appear lazy and suddenly grew stronger, everyone will suspect that I have treasured. All eyes will turn towards me.

Before becoming strong, I need to keep the stronger eyes away. If they see that I was improving like every other magician, they won’t pay much attention.

When I become the strongest, even if they think that I possess treasures, they can’t hurt me in any way.

After my exercises, I took bath to clean myself and put on the new academic wear.

The clothes have runes, which adjusted to our bodies pretty easily. This would reduce the need to buy new clothes every time the body has slight improvement. This is one of my recent concerns.

After I started to increase the stats, my body started to change. My old clothes started to become tighter. If this progress, I would need new clothes. It isn’t the main problem though, as this problem would reoccur.

No way am I going to waste money on that, but the answer prescribed itself.

Runes, I’m going to make rune clothes. It may take time but for now, I have what the academy provided me.

Later I should search for something on this. For now, it’s time to go to class.

8 A.M., Class 1-E

Class 1-E is my class. Unlike the dormitories which are allotted depending on the seniors, we were allotted to. The ones with the highest affinity grade or some special ones are placed in Class 1-A.

The classes range from A to F, in the decreasing affinity grade. The resources provided by the academy to the students reduce in that order. Class 1-A gets a lot of resources in comparison, while 1-F gets low in quantity and quality.

As I learned this is a temporary situation. If one could prove one’s worth in the exams or competitions, one would ascend. The reverse goes for students in the upper classes.

When I entered the class it was almost full. Most of the front-row and middle-row seats were occupied.

I quickly found a corner seat which also gave a view of the outside. I grabbed it before anyone can. Normally kids should flock to this but here it seems different.

Though this is 1-E, these are not of the bottom rung. Most of them are geniuses but in the academy, there are plenty more. They know the only way to improve quickly is to get guidance from a professor.

If the professor likes the student, they get easy access to the best academy facilities. Though everyone has access, those facilities would be common facilities.

The top students would have access to private facilities where they won’t be disturbed. In common grounds, everyone has to spar in a limited space.

“Hi, I’m Gregory. Friends call me Greg.”

When I heard the voice I turned around to see a fat boy sitting next to me, who introduced himself as Greg.

“Hello, I’m Damon. Friends call me Damon.”

The boy chuckled at my response.

Why in world did he sit near me? It’s a cliché protagonist plot.

A fat boy befriends the protagonist who is weak. They get bullied by rich young masters or some genius idiot. Later by Heaven’s Will the protagonist’s power raises so much so that these small fries faint at his sight.

It looks good but it also attracts more problems than I care to handle. The only thing on my mind is now to clear the mystery behind my parents’ death. Nothing much concerns me.

There are two living people I care about and the other two are dead. They are enough for now. If I need I can make friends with characters that don’t attract disasters.

Both protagonists and their companions are considered disaster magnets. I don’t need to be one. I need to keep my distance from potential companions or I could become the cliché.

After I replied back I turned away to look outside the room.

Everyone is new to each other except for a few who came from the same regions.

I didn’t know anyone here, even the one from the Pearl City, Claire was placed in Class 1-A. Her affinity grade when awakened is far better than mine but not now.

With the system, my affinity grade became the best out there, better than the known grades. Though it is the best, I can’t expose myself. If anyone finds out about this, my life will be in danger. The greedy ones will either enslave me or kill me in order to find my secrets.

So for now, I have to look normal in order to not enter their eyes. During the recruitment a lot of people eyed me. They may have felt my improvement. I need to be careful or else…

For now, I would just save the points I get every day. I should concentrate on learning new spells and practicing them so that I can cast them reflexively.

“Okay class, that is for the introductory class. From tomorrow, your real life as a mage starts. In your school, you would have learned the basic ways of magic but here we dwell into them more deeply.”
