A few hours before the incident.

"Dravon!"

Dravon could hear Will calling him, but he quickened his pace along the palace corridors. Soon, he turned and ascended the stairs. Behind him, he could hear the sound of Will's footsteps climbing each step. Much faster than his own.

"You didn't watch the trial proceedings until the end," added Will. Dravon's friend didn't even pant as he successfully caught up and walked side by side with him.

"Why did you follow me, Will?" Dravon protested irritably. Spotting a maid cleaning the glass of a room, Dravon quickly approached her.

"Please prepare a room for guest with two single beds," Dravon whispered almost inaudibly to Will.

"I will do it immediately, Your Highness," the maid nodded and promptly went to a place unknown to Dravon.

While waiting, Dravon decided to lean against the railing, observing the palace garden's flowers from a height. Dewdrops dripped from the roof onto the back of his hand.

"Why did you ask the servant to prepare a gues

Kieran woke up to the sound of the car door being opened and closed. He opened his eyes, observing the illuminated garage door by the car's light. A house cat with a collar equipped with a tracker suddenly leaped onto the car hood, licking one of his front paws. Groggily, he glanced to the back seat to find Lunabelle, who had just awakened as well. It was then that the sound of the trunk being opened reached his ears, and Kieran saw Julian pulling out his large and heavy suitcase."Wait, I can handle it myself," Kieran said, unfastening his seatbelt. Hurriedly, he exited the car, but Julian had already lifted the suitcase onto the porch of the house."Welcome to my home," Julian said after placing the suitcase in front of the door. He blew his bangs and then took out the garage keys from his pocket. For a moment, Kieran observed Julian's house and the surrounding yard—a cozy two-story home with neatly trimmed grass. Many other houses dotted the neighborhood, creating a serene atmosphe

Unlike Princess Silvanna Silverlake's funeral, Princess Crown Emmeline Purplesong's funeral was held officially and extravagantly in the royal family's private cemetery, right on a plot of land slightly on the edge. The funeral was now bustling with the arrangement of formal ceremonies attended by several dignitaries from neighboring countries (excluding the Varidianth kingdom, which refused to attend), all the nobility in the Valorthorn kingdom, and media from various nations with their noisy cameras occasionally flashing dazzling lights.Dravon sat among the three thrones provided for the Nightcrown family, right beside the king. On the other side of the king, a vacant seat remained as Prince Vikrant was reportedly too grief-stricken over his fiancée's death. However, Dravon was willing to bet the man was merely sipping wine in the palace study, then complaining about a drop staining his white shirt. In the front row of mourners, Dravon observed William Zephyr sitting with his paren

"Will, can we talk?"After that self-deprecating sentence escaped his lips, Dravon closed his eyes. He moved away from Will's room door and leaned his back against the wall. Unconsciously, his soaked clothes from the rain had already dampened the thick carpet on the wall. "Your Highness..." A maid approached him with a concerned expression. Dravon glanced at the young girl and realized she held a neatly folded white towel in her hands. Wearily, Dravon accepted the towel immediately, though he didn't use it right away."Thank you," Dravon said to the young maid. She still stood patiently in the corridor of Duke Zephyr's manor, and it seemed the maid had no intention of leaving due to Dravon's stubborn attitude."Your Highness," the maid touched Dravon's wet shoulder. "Please understand that Master Will is grieving. He doesn't wish to see anyone today, including us servants.""If you're dismissing me, I don't care," Dravon replied heartlessly. He closed his weary eyes. "I want to witne

"So, you're going to leave me for two days?" Lunabelle's surprised and gloomy voice made Kieran feel guilty. The little girl was standing on the floor in a comfortable red cotton dress that Mrs. Snowblur had bought for her when they went downtown yesterday. She held a Braille book with a cover depicting a snow princess and seven dwarfs. Imagining leaving Lunabelle with Mrs. Snowblur wasn't a bad thing, as the kind woman knew how to take care of a young child. However, Kieran still felt irresponsible.Suddenly, a knock sounded on their already open bedroom door. Kieran turned to find Mrs. Snowblur standing at the doorway."It's okay, Lunabelle," Mrs. Snowblur reassured. She walked into the room and gently picked up Lunabelle. "While Kieran is off saving the world, you and I can harvest strawberries in the garden. How does that sound? Good?"Lunabelle now looked like she wanted to cry but held back because she was with Mrs. Snowblur. "I don't want Kieran to go save the world," she whined

With his eyes closed, Kieran could feel the police flashlight directed at his face. However, he just slowed his breathing and continued pretending to be asleep with his arm leaning against the car door."That's Jules," Serena said wearily. "Julian Snowblur, remember? You once caught us when we went to Umbravale."For a moment, the police officer nodded, somewhat puzzled. "I didn't know he'd grow up this skinny," he said sympathetically. "Parents' divorce really changes everything. I'm lucky I never got married."Serena grinned and chuckled softly. "The right decision, Sir. We need less drama in our lives," she said confidently."Well then, have a safe trip, kids.""Thank you, sir." After that, the car drove on without any hindrance, and Serena sighed in relief. "Luckily, I could use Jules' name earlier," she muttered softly. "My dad could scold me to death if he heard I was fooling around with a fugitive, right?""Really?" Kieran grinned wryly. "Are you sure he won't kill me first bef

"Is that you, Kieran?" Serena repeated her question. The strong wind tousled her soft, black hair. For a moment, Kieran couldn't find words. He returned Serena's gaze, looking at her for quite some time. Then, he glanced down at his heavy shopping basket. Somehow, he didn't want Serena to know about him. He just didn't want the girl to know him too well. Because after the issues in Rainvale, if Kieran was fortunate enough to survive the impending attack, he might have to travel to another place. Keep traveling until his steps led him back to Umbravale as the savior. He was just a small particle in Serena Swiftwind's life."Oh, goodness," Serena sighed in frustration. The girl stood with her hands on her hips, annoyed. "I know you're a shy guy, but you have to tell the people of Umbravale who you really are! I feel sorry for those who keep hoping for the Nyxshade descendant to come and save them. We don't even know where that child is, right?"Kieran blinked. Serena misunderstood. "Ser

As Serena's sea-colored eyes stared at him, Kieran could feel sadness and disappointment mingling there. He swallowed. You said you're a fugitive, right? They could catch you."Kieran had been thinking about it since he left Valorthorn. Making him swear not to return there anytime soon. But circumstances were different now. "It's not a problem," Kieran said. Besides, he now knew how to use the revenant's power. He could protect himself. "Besides, you're right. We need crucial information on when and how Dravon will attack. I don't even know with who he'll do it with."They locked eyes for a moment, and suddenly Kieran felt Serena was too far. Two years ago."Your academic achievements last year surpassed all the schools in the Varidianth kingdom, Kieran. I hope this year you continue to maintain your brilliant performance." After saying that, the headmaster smiled warmly and politely at Kieran, without a word of thanks or congratulations, as if it was only natural and deserved that Kieran achieved the highest rank in Varidianth. However, Kieran was already accustomed to the burden of expectations and others' confidence in him."Of course, Prof," Kieran said. He stood up and shook hands with the headmaster, then carried away a box adorned with golden velvet layers given by the Varidianth kingdom. As Kieran stepped out of the headmaster's office, he paused in the corridor, gazing out of the window. "I decided to trust you, Dravon," Kieran replied. "But you betrayed my trust in you. Over and over again." He maintained his smile, as the tip of his sword was still in Dravon's grasp. He pushed his sword harder, but Dravon's defences were as hard as granite. The prince began to fight back, until the blade of Kieran's sword slipped out and pierced the bed. The Valorthorn prince immediately jumped out of bed. His diamond-hilted sword formed in his hand from millions of pieces of magic light. "Read my mind, Kieran," Dravon growled, almost pleading. "So that you may know what truly happened." Kieran's gaze dimmed. "I don't want to know," he refused. The next instant all the glass in the place shattered and struck Dravon. The Crown Prince immediately ducked, creating a protective wall of magic around his body. Dravon gritted his teeth as he got back to his feet. "Alright if that's what you want, we fight," he said. The man immediately swung his magic sword at Kieran. Both their swo

Kieran was woken up by a jolt on his shoulder. He opened his eyes, instantly overcome by a feeling of nausea. But when he realised that it was Julian who woke him up, he was shocked to death. Because Julian's clothes were soiled with blood and sweat. In his hand was a sword, which Kieran realised he had borrowed from a palace knight. Around them was only chaos. "I think they mixed something into my drink," Kieran said. "A lot of something and—" "That's not important," Julian interrupted. "Everly betrayed us. But somehow she didn't give me enough sleeping pills. So I woke up early, and saw a lot of dead souls out there. A lot of them. The phone rang, and I called Serena's father. It was just as bad there. There's a plague of dead souls that's attacking our entire kingdom." Each sentence pierced Kieran like a sword. He quickly got up from his chair and for a moment desperately fought off the dizziness and nausea. Even so, he immediately searched for Elios Silverlake's whereabouts, an

"It's weird seeing four revenants in one room," was the first thing the King of Varidianth, Elios Silverlake, said as they were all ushered into the Throne Room."Yeah, maybe not as weird as all of us seeing you suddenly become King, Elios," Jace replied kindly from the corner of the room. But everyone ignored him, especially Morana."We may look like immortal, rebellious seventeen-year-olds, but I hope you know that recently the number of revenants has increased due to the rise of The Malevolent Sorcerer-King. I hope it's not you," Morana said calmly.Elios immediately stood up from his throne chair, as if he was uncomfortable sitting there. The man approached all the prisoners, with a sad smile. "You don't look like a seventeen-year-old to me at all," Elios said. "But the fact that you're here, away from Zyronox, I think proves that you're in good hands. • 135 | Indecisive between Two Sides

In her entire life, Everly had never heard of the Black Tower. But from the bones scattered in the corner of the room, it was most likely the same place as the Red Tower in the northern area of Valorthorn that was reserved for the exile of traitors. The difference, though, was that there were no alogojos and torture devices waiting here. There was only darkness and emptiness, which was actually another form of torture."So..." Everly tried not to glance over as her cousin, Oliver, inched closer while rubbing his hands together. "How have you been?"After the past six months of being exiled by their extended family simply because of the curse in her blood, the words 'How have you been?' really felt ambiguous. Nonetheless, Everly shrugged. "As you can see, Odd," she muttered. "I'm confined here with you on traitorous charges. And since that's the way it is, I try not to protest."Oliver laughed awkwardly, as if he thought she was trying to be funny. But she wasn't. There was nothing fun

  • 134 | Fixing the Past

Dravon was right, that Kieran did not need mind-reading magic to know what had just happened. He could feel the coldness of William Zephyr's gaze on him, penetrating his skin. He could feel the emptiness that Dravon hid behind his casual demeanour. But it was the fact that Dravon came straight to him after his fight with William that bothered Kieran. It made him, inevitably, remember the past between the two of them in Umbravale."You think," Dravon muttered as he leaned against the magic wall. He casually removed his court robes and placed them on his lap. Kieran had never noticed it before. How graceful Dravon was. How he was more fit to be a prince than a king's son really was. How friendly and kind he was to his peers and the people who worked for him. "What will become of us. I mean, what fate awaits you and me."Kieran huffed. It was more because he felt cold than because he wanted to be cool. Dravon's magic fire was right behind his back but he couldn't feel

A canopied bed, a sofa set, a dresser and a closet.Dravon was not at all surprised, he simply lit a fire in the two lanterns that lay on top of the pair of nightstands in the bedroom, and sat down on his dusty, fragile bed. A centipede poked out of the hem of his blanket, but Dravon deliberately ignored it."So," Dravon asked cheerfully. "What did you want to talk to me about, Will?"Will moved closer to him. All his cool demeanour slowly crumbled, replaced with a fragility underneath. "We lost badly," he muttered. "But it's not too late. I know atop this tower we can still paint the final magic pattern. Or we can go home to Valorthorn, and def

When the cloth covering their eyes was finally opened, only darkness and cold greeted them. A building, which Julian finally realized was the Black Tower. Although it seemed like this place wasn't as scary as Lord Swiftwind had told him about. Or perhaps, the wizards around him made Julian feel that way. After the presence of the knights enclosing them had long since faded, Dravon snapped his fingers, summoning blue magic flames that danced around them all, burning what Julian realized too late to be bones. The bones of those who were once trapped in this place."We are only three hours away from the palace," said William. His pale and handsome face looked beautiful against the blue firelight."Maybe only an hour," Dravon muttered as he looked at every burnt bone. Not at all bothered by the heat. So like it or not, Julian thinks about Jace. That those who have fire elemental magic cannot burn. "They deliberately chose a circuitous path to confuse us.""Now what do we want to do?" Oliv

From Lana's chuckle and Lunabelle's annoyed voice, Arlo realized that his sister was discussing romantic matters with Lana. Also complaining about Arlo. Because they both remained silent when Arlo entered the room."Well," said Arlo cheerfully as he sat on the sofa with his legs propped up on one of the arms. "It seems like you two are doing fine while Varidianth is getting destroyed overtime."Lunabelle's pink eyebrows rose. "What's going on with Varidianth? The plague of dead souls?""Yeah, almost actually," Arlo answered. "But what I want to say is, Seraphina died." Lunabelle froze in shock. And Arlo proceeded cautiously."Seraphina was killed by Prince Vikrant. After that, we were forced to appoint Elios as king. So that's it. You are officially a royal princess again," he explained. Previously, the Black Tower was just a bedtime story for Kieran. Different from prison, this place was used to lock up nobles who betrayed the kingdom. It is said that every prisoner locked up there would rather die than stay there for the rest of their lives. Now, Kieran knew that it wasn't just a fairy tale. His eyes were covered by a black cloth while his hands were tied by another cloth. He, Julian, Serena, as well as Dravon, Oliver, William, Everly, and their servant whose name Kieran didn't know, were forced to sit in a horse-drawn carriage whose cabin was quite long. During the uncomfortable journey because the carriage kept shaking due to rocks or roots, they could hear the galloping of the horses of the knights accompanying them."It's really sad that now you and I are on the same train, heading to the Black Tower, Kieran," Dravon said sarcastically.
