Danny knew things would have been different if he was rich, but being poor and without money. It's all these people cares about. His body shook with anger and despair. He walk to the bar just outside of town. The money still clamped in his hand. His mind kept replaying what had happened to him. As he enters the bar, a couple of lifers looked curiously at him. He sits down at the nearest chair.
“What can I get you?” the bartender stood in front of him. “What happened to your face?”
“A bitch,” he suddenly snarl smacking the money on the counter.
“Mild…hard…harsh…” the big man asks.
“Huh,” Danny looked openly confused.
“I got you, dude.”
Danny watch him place a Beer in front of him. The door opened behind him. The rowdy footballers enter. He reached for his bottle of beer and took a giant swallow. He instantly chokes making the men close to him laughed softly.
“Buy us a brandy and talk to us, boy.”
The two men comes and sits down on both sides of him. He shrugs his shoulders before placing the order. Again; reaching for his beer. Using the mirror behind the counter he watched the footballers, a grim look on his face.
“I take it they confused your face for a ball.” Guy on the left asks.
“You can say that.” Danny admits.
“I assume there were a girl involved?” Guy on the right asks reaching for his brandy. He eagerly swallows the content.
“You can say that,” Danny kept answering in a monologue. He nods to the bartender for another round for the men beside him.
“Talk to us. We can see this beast is eating you from the inside.” Guy number two said.
Danny drinks from his bottle again. No drinker he can feel the instant effects on his senses. With his fingers around the bottle he looked at both men. “I might insult you,” he observed.
“Doesn’t matter. Buy another round and all is forgiven.” Guy two said eagerly.
“Lisa…her name. She is gorgeous.” He took another swallow from his bottle. “Just found out I am the biggest loser and fool in town.” He said with a nasty twist around his lips.
“Are you going to take revenge?” Guy, one asks curiously.
“How?”
“Your Lisa belongs to the footballers, right.”
“Yes,” Danny looked curiously at the older man. He seemed to have knowledge.
“Happened to both of us,” Guy one said. “The mistake we made was looking into the bottle too deep.”
“I can’t compete with them in sports. I am not build that way. Besides, I am poor with no future.”
“There is always a way.”
Danny said nothing just broodingly looked at the bottle of beer. “Somehow…I will make them all pay.”
“That’s the spirit.” Both men clapped him on the shoulder.
The cell phone ringing in his pocket. He slowly realized he had been there much longer then he realized.
“Hello…” he said with a slur.
“Denver…” the voice sound harsh on speaker.
“Yes sir.”
“Come to the house. We need to talk.” Daniel Ricardo orders.
“Yes sir. The…loser is…coming,” he said burping.
“Denver…get into a taxi. I will pay.”
“I can do my own paying.” He said slurring before putting the phone back in his pocket. He removed the money he earned and throws it onto the counter. Getting onto his feet he staggered to the door. The two men and bartender watch him leave.
Danny climbed from the taxi. He stood looking at the house where he had grown up in. He watched the front door open. Taking a deep breath, he slowly staggered forward. As he steps past his father he just wanted to go to his room.
“What happened, Denver?”
“Do you really care?” he asks sullenly.
“Denver…” he growls.
“Lisa played me for a fool. I am poor and stupid.” He starts to walk towards his room.
“Denver…I need to tell you something.”
“Tell me tomorrow.”
“No…you must know tonight. You have come of age. It’s time that you know the truth.”
“I already know the truth, Dad. We are poor and I will never amount to anything more then what I already am…a loser.”
“Denver Ricardo…you are no loser. Son; we are in truth very wealthy.”
Danny looked at his father shaking his head. “Stop daydreaming Dad.”
“I can prove this, son.”
“You know Dad, I could use 100 billion dollars as an allowance. But that’s not going to happen. I am going to bed.”
Danny dropped full length onto his bed. He was sound asleep the moment his head hit the pillow. In his dreams he could still hear Lisa laughing at him calling him names. He rolled onto his side feeling the pain in his chest.
“Bitch,” he whispered.
The cell phone beside him alerted a message. Reaching for it he found photos of him being beaten and humiliated. He lifted his hand and throws the phone away. The beeping suggested there was more messages.
“Bloody hell, I have gotten the message.” He punches his pillow. The noises keep coming from the corner where the phone had landed. He placed the pillow on his head and forced himself to sleep.
The insistent ringing of the cell phone woke him the next morning. The moment his eyes opened it felt like needles sticks right into his head that was throbbing like crazy. The taste in his mouth made him realized he will never drink again. His own breath also stinks.
“Hell no,” he rolls onto his side before moving into a sitting position. The world was spinning and still the phone keeps ringing.
“What the hell do you want?” he growls into the phone he finally managed to picked from the floor.
“Starting the day on a lousy note.” The voice grumbles.
“Who the devil are you?” he grumbles back.
“You know for someone who insisted on having an allowance of 100 billion dollars, you sure know how to use it effectively.
“What…what are you talking about?” Danny slowly recalls he made such a remark to his father.
“Did you even look at your phone fool?” the voice snaps sounding a bit familiar.
Danny removed the phone from his ear and start checking the messages. Apart from the photos still circling around…he finally found the message reading 100 billion dollars credit to his account.
“Who are you?” he finally asks. The hang over heavy but the fussiness was quickly clearing.
“I am Denver Petro Ricardo, senior. I am your grandfather. Get yourself from that bloody bed and come to the living room. We are waiting for you.” The call suddenly dead.
Danny jumped from the bed. He rushed to the door. He fumbles a moment trying to open it. Once in the hall he quickly went to the living room. He stops in his tracks when he saw an older version of himself and his father.
“Ricardo men never conduct themselves as drunkards,”
“Father…easy, the boy had to learn the tricks of beautiful girls. Danny, take the pain killers and water. There is also a strong cup of coffee. It will help for the negative effects.”
Danny stood looking at both older men. He was hearing their words but was slow in understanding.
“What’s going on here?”
“You, are Denver Petro Ricardo, my name sake. I am your grandfather. Daniel, is my son. We are the powerful Ricardo men. We own the whole town. That include that fools from the football team. You ready to take your revenge for what happened yesterday?” Ricardo senior asks. "There is much more to you then what you currently knows. You are not ordinary."
"What do you mean?"
"I want you to discover your own truth. Never let them see you come. Strike your blows." The Ricardo men looked at each other.
“Denver…” “Yes, sir.” Danny looked curiously at his father. Then at his grandfather. Both men watched him intently. “You have come of age. My son, I don’t want to humiliate you but I want to know what had happened last night.” Daniel looked seriously at his boy. “Do I have to tell you, sir?” “Yes, my boy. I would appreciate this.” The father openly wait curious if he has future trust with his son. “Sir, I was attack at school but that I can handle…” He looked away feeling fury and shame. “Lisa…she played me for a fool. I was just a bet gone wrong.” He felt his skin burn with inner heat. “What are you going to do?” “I am not sure yet.” Danny admits honestly. Denver senior suddenly stood up. He walked towards his grandson and simply place his hand a moment on his shoulder. “You are part of the Ricardo clan. Take your time and find your feet. This is your path…know us when you need us.” He nods his head to his own son before he left. “Denver…” “Yes, sir.” He took the offered m
Danny climbed from the taxi in the center of Ricardo-Saint-Claire. He never even considered to come to this part of the town. Where he grown up everyone knows the rich and powerful lives and work here. He never even considered the possibility of being part of this society.“Dude, are you sure?” the taxi driver asked. “Why?” Danny realized he truly looked out of place. “Just checking.” Danny said nothing just paid him along with a generous tip. He slowly start to browse the luxury shops. The moment he step into a shop he noticed the salespersons looked at him like he was trash. Everything was extraordinary expensive. He always thought he knew Lisa but now he was uncertain what to get her. “Hello how may I help you?” the salesperson comes closer but also kept her distance. Apparently afraid his poorness might rub off on her. Her attitude was the norm where he was from. Danny just looked at her. The words feels stuck in his throat. He quickly turned around and run from the shop. Once
Danny knew he was making a mistake. He also realized he needed closure. Lisa Klein was his first girlfriend…or so he thought. That was also part of the reason he entered this luxury shops. He instantly saw the shock then disgust on her face. “What are you doing here?” she asked stepping away from Jason. “I told you the loser will come sniffing around, Lisa.” Jason said with barely controlled anger. “Jason…I told you there was nothing between us. Stop being jealous.” “Get out,” Jason approached him. He grabbed him in front of the shirt. He intend to throw him out of the shop. Lisa start to laugh looking him up and down. Her true emotions clearly reflected on her face. She quickly step up to Jason and whispered in his ear. Both start to laugh. “You might be right Lisa.” Jason looked at him with disdain. “Are you stalking Lisa?” he challenged. “No…no…” Danny was startled. He doesn’t need trouble from the police. He has forgotten for now that he could in reality destroy both by clai
Lisa Klein was a girl raised to chase only the best provider. It took time and much effort before she landed Jason Clarke. She knows he sometimes step out on her. It was acceptable as long as everyone knows she was his girlfriend. “How is this possible?” she asked herself softly. “Just yesterday he was poor now today he can afford the most expensive item in the shop.” She stood motionless letting the last two weeks played off in her mind…Danny always picking her up at the entrance of the road leading towards their little house snuggly hidden between the heavy tree branches. She always made certain not one of her friends ever saw them together. She quietly admits she did enjoy the outings on the little boat in the lake in their background. She remembered ‘him’ making her laugh like she used too when she was a little girl. “Danny…” she whispered his name. She suddenly like the taste of his name on her tongue. She slowly start to realized she made a mistake…Jason was the obvious choice
“I told you all I saw him steal something.” Jason said sounding satisfied. “Look at the evidence.” He pointed towards the things laying on the counter. “What are you talking about?” Danny looked at what he placed on the counter. His heart nearly stopped when he saw the diamond hairpin amongst his things. He was at a complete loss as to how that thing ended up amongst his stuff. He slowly looked towards Jason knowing he did it somehow. No matter how he searched his mind he can’t remember how he did this. “That’s not mine,” Danny said honestly. “Always the thief’s path of denial.” Jason said snidely. “I don’t know how you did this…you are the thief.” Danny said flatly. “Your Daddy raised a thief.” Jason decided to taunt him. “You will regret that,” Danny warned. “What’s going on here?” Jess Stone, the Manager suddenly made her presence known. “I am not sure what happened Miss Stone but it appears as though the customer might have stolen something.” Cleo declared her position. Danny step out of the shop confused about what had just happened. As he walked towards the taxi he suddenly realized the truth. He quickly search for the signet ring, suddenly knowing the Manager knew which family he belonged too. “Now I understand why father said keep it close.” He said shaking his head. “The power in something so small.” About to get into the taxi he was surrounded by Jason and his friends. One look into Billy-Bob’s eyes and he knew he was in trouble again. “Loser…heard you are making trouble.” Billy-Bob said while bulging his muscles. “I don’t know what you are talking about.” Danny said flatly. “Are you calling me a liar?” “No, you are stupid.” Danny wonders if the ring was giving him courage. Just yesterday he wouldn’t have dared talking like that. “Grab the fool,” Billy-Bob orders his underdogs. Danny decided to run. At the moment he doesn’t care that he was a coward. He just don’t want to arrive at the party full of blood. One thing was certain, after t
“Danny,” The chill on his skin woke him. He blinked several times before he realized he looked at a gauntlet of people. His mind felt fuzzy as he struggled to recall what happened. The last coherent thought was his father calling him to inform him he was receiving his own mansion. “Guys, the loser is waking up.” Jason stuffed his money into his pocket. He wipes what appeared to be blood from the inside of his lips. “What…” he tried to form words but his throat felt dry. As he tried wetting his lips, he felt the cracked skin and dried blood on his lips. “Took your bloody time,” Billy-Bob now stood beside Jason. “We good, bro?” he looked at Jason who just nods his head. “What about him?” Danny tried blinking his eyes. His thoughts was still fuzzy. He tried to focus on the conversation right in his face. He quietly understood he was in serious trouble. “Let the police deal with him.” Jason said. “What if he somehow convinced them he was innocent?” Billy-Bob asked a bit anxious. “N
Denver sits motionless trying to figure out what just happened. There was definitely a shift in his reality but he just can't seem to recognize the significance."Dude, are you okay? I hope you aren’t drugged. I don’t need the hassle.” The taxi driver looked at him through the rearview mirror. “I am just cold,” Danny tries his best to warm himself. He just knew something happened; but who can he talk to about what had occurred. “Get out.” The driver suddenly annoyed. “You made me drive around all night. I had enough.” Danny opened the door getting out. He paid the man. He slowly looked around. The mansion was situated against the side of a mountain. He start to walk up the road. He knew he was in trouble with his father, it couldn’t be helped once his cell phone died. “Stop,” the guard suddenly made an appearance from behind the trees. “What the hell?” Danny was instantly annoyed. He hates being scared by other people. He was still nervous and uncertain about the strange happening
