“Joslin, wait.”

She turned, facing him. It felt as though she was on the edge of a cliff, about to be pushed.

“We could have our past again. Give it a chance, Joslin. We were happy once. We could have it all again.” He reached for her hand. The wedding rings burned his finger.

Joslin disentangled her hand from his. She moved bodily a little further away from him, never questioning her behavior but trusting her instinct.

“No, we cannot, David.”

She turned away, wanting to go back into the house, but David pulled her back roughly against himself; instant, unconcealed anger turning his face red.

“You left me with no explanation. Why, Tessa?” he demanded, with growing aggression. It seems as if he cannot control himself now.

“You know why. You gave me the reason. Besides, it was time that we separated anyway. In the long run, things would not have worked between us.”

“That was your decision, Joslin. Not mine.” He started shaking her.

“Let me go, David.” She knows only a call or scream fro
