5. People with Special Abilities and Zombies

Luca was the last to rise from his chair, so he saw Ruth faint and swiftly caught her body. Cold sweat was seeping down the girl’s back as if she had taken a shower, her face pale and slightly hot.

Luca took Ruth to her room, laid her down, and took care of her. He patiently wiped away her sweat. In the evening, Ruth still didn’t wake up and her body had a severe fever. It was so hot that it could cook a sunny-side-up egg.

The sunlight did not change, it became more like blood day by day. More and more people fell ill, and the chaos intensified.

Luca stayed at home. He monitored the situation on the monitor, watched the news channels, and took care of unconscious Ruth. Fortunately, there was an IV that could help her.

As for Luca, from his dreams, he knew he was just an ordinary person. That’s why he tried hard to train his physical strength, agility and accuracy of attacks were also necessary.

Tired of having no one to talk to and not knowing what to do, Luca turned on his laptop and connected to the internet to watch the news. From the surveillance room, he could see the blood-red sunlight slowly being covered by clouds. It caused daylight to look like afternoon.

The news was still the same as the old news. The anchor sat in the studio in a neat outfit and fooled everyone.

“The situation will be under control soon. Please don’t go out, prepare food and drink, rescue teams will come to save everyone. The government hasn’t given up yet.”

Luca sneered and switched to another news channel, and browsed every platform that was usually crowded.

News on the internet is amazing, even if the government wants to suppress it, it still spreads like crazy. The first human who became a zombie was resurrected yesterday, which made a huge stir, then followed by the news saying that many humans were turning into zombies. Especially in hospitals.

Luca clicked on some videos related to zombies. The zombies moved stiffly and slowly, but their strength was almost equivalent to an adult human, plus their bodies couldn’t feel pain and death.

The zombies feed on humans. Seeing that cruel and bloody scene, even though Luca was mentally prepared, it still felt disgusting. He ran to the bathroom and vomited.

“Damn, it looks so real!” After saying that, Luca patted his forehead. “This is indeed real. The world has changed.”

He stabilized his emotions and familiarized himself by watching video after video over and over again until the nausea disappeared.

It was already 6 pm when he realized the time. Shutting down the computer and rushing downstairs. When he was still on the stairs, a large tremor occurred. Minor earthquakes were not unusual these few weeks, but today were strong enough to cause some objects to fall.

Luckily, their house was sturdy. Luca trudged up the stairs, holding on to the wall as he made his way toward Ruth’s room.

The shaking stopped just as Luca opened the door. Ruth was awake and feeling dizzy from the earthquake. She turned toward the door as soon as she heard movement.

“You’re awake.” Luca entered naturally and pushed away the surprise in his eyes. He approached Ruth and touched her forehead to check her temperature. “How are you feeling?”

Ruth stared at the ceiling with wide eyes. Her voice trembled and was very small. “Hungry.”

Luca frowned as soon as he heard her words, but he quickly got up and went to the kitchen to make some rice porridge. Half an hour later, he came back with a bowl of warm porridge and a glass of warm mineral water, as well as some vitamin tablets.

Seeing Ruth sitting leaning against the headboard, Luca placed his luggage on the bedside table.

He asked patiently, “Can you feed yourself?”

Ruth lifted her pale face and looked at Luca, reaching out to show a trembling hand. That alone was enough to answer Luca’s question

So inevitably Luca had to feed the girl.

After finishing feeding, Luca didn’t leave the room. He picked up his laptop and turned it on.

The chaos outside was just like the chaos on the internet. Many people came out and raged against the slow government. Some were crying for help, and even the ‘smart people’ started to express their theories.

Scream after scream echoed, followed by a bunch of hungry zombies. Despite getting used to it, the expression on Luca’s face still looked ugly.

Ruth only heard the sound because Luca was sitting on the sofa facing her with his back to the laptop screen, and she could see his expression. Her voice was hoarse and slightly weak as he said, “What are you disgusted with?”

Luca looked away and stared at Ruth, snorting coldly, replying, “The thought of there being zombies eating humans, that’s disgusting.”

“Yeah, get used to it.” Ruth laid her body down.

She knew exactly how Luca felt when he first encountered this dreamlike situation. If mental strength and psychological endurance were lacking, it would take a long time to get used to them. However, Luca did not seem to have much resistance. It would only take a short time for the man to get used to it.

The news rolled over to the military side. There was an army general who posted a new video to calm the public and instantly became a trending topic.

{Don’t panic. At the military base, there is someone who has awakened superpowers. He is General Hugo Lloris. Don’t give up, there is still hope for all of us!}

“This General Hugo seems to be the first person to awaken superpowers. Well, at least the registered ones,” Luca told Ruth about this information. He found out 3 days ago, just when more and more people were falling ill, General Hugo awakened superpowers.

There was no response from Ruth. Luca thought it was because she still felt uncomfortable.

So Luca went back to talking about Hugo. “I heard that this general is also very strong and young. He’s smart. This will be a suitable partner if we want to live safely.”

Luca told more things about Hugo until Ruth’s loud voice rang out.

“Strong what? Don’t talk about that guy!”

Ruth’s anger took Luca by surprise. He stared at her for almost a second. “Why are you angry? This guy is ....”

Luca’s words stopped as soon as he saw Ruth’s eyes filled with emotion. There was hatred, anger, disgust, and... disappointment.

Luca had never seen Ruth with so many emotions. This both surprised and intrigued him.

Ruth looked away to avoid Luca’s gaze and closed her eyes.

Seeing that reaction, Luca quickly switched to another video. However, his mind and focus were no longer occupied by the content of the video.

Ruth, on the other hand, couldn’t get rid of the pieces of memory in her head. She knew clearly that Hugo would be Luca’s strongest rival. Hugo was not a good person. He was full of tricks and deceit. Despite his powerful abilities and smart brain, he was very cruel and heartless. Hugo could throw anyone away and subjugate them, no matter how much that person contributed to him.

Ruth hated people like that!

After a few quiet moments, Ruth fell asleep. Luca went out and searched for information about Hugo.

Hugo Lloris is a 32-year-old man who had reached the pinnacle of life because of his intelligence and strength. He is also handsome and comes from a prominent family.

There are still many things that Luca finds out about Hugo back in his elementary school days. Apart from the achievements made, nothing bad is reported.

“Ruth is so weird,” he commented to himself. He propped up his chin and stared at Hugo’s photo.

The power suddenly went out, the earthquake shook again, but with a lower magnitude, only making people feel dizzy for a moment.

Sooner or later, the world would be shrouded in darkness, there would be no internet access, it would cut communication off, and a stone age-like life would emerge. The difference is, if the enemy of humans used to be wild animals, now it’s zombies.

Suddenly someone tapped him on the shoulder. Luca jumped in surprise and screamed.

Ruth hit Luca on the head and said, “Shut up! You’re such a coward!”

“Hey, you startled me. Can’t you make a sound when you walk?” Luca pulled out his chair and sat back down.

“I walk in front of you and you don’t see?”

Luca frowned, old hatred and new hatred accumulating. Angrily he said, “How could I see you, Miss? It’s all dark over there and there’s not a speck of light!”

“Ahh ....” Ruth sighed regretfully. She forgot that Luca was currently just an ordinary human who needed more time to adapt to the darkness. While she, as a human with special abilities, had good eyesight in the dark.

“Then I’ll turn on the diesel.”

Ruth left without waiting for Luca’s reply. Luca, however, followed behind with the help of a flashlight.

“Can you see clearly?” Luca noticed that Ruth was walking very smoothly.

The girl nodded and muttered low, saying nothing more. They entered the room at the back and turned on the diesel. The lights in the house burned as brightly as before.

For fear of being conspicuous in the midst of complete darkness, some of the lights are off. Leaving only the center light and the room where they would sleep.

Ruth recovered quickly. They lived like that for a few days. The small rain didn’t stop for almost 2 days, which added to the gloomy feeling. However, Luca still practiced diligently, no matter how cold the weather was.

“Hey, can I ask you something?” Luca gulped down a bottle of mineral water and wiped the sweat from his forehead.

Ruth was examining some weapons that could be used to kill zombies. He indifferently responded, “What?”

“That guy... Hugo. Do you know him?”

Given Ruth’s reaction then and her silence now, Luca had a vague guess. It was just that he didn’t know what the relationship between the two people was to the point that Ruth knew Hugo’s nature.

“You know him, so who is he?”
