Gregory chose to act now because he knew how important Isabella was to Allegra. If he could control Allegra, then Isaac would also be subdued.

Furthermore, Alec would also be indebted to him. Gregory could ignore Edward and the like, but the literary genius of Southland had some degree of importance.
