However, Isaac continued to chew again. Then, he swallowed, and Margaret’s racing heart slowed down again.

She thought, “That’s what you get for acting high and mighty all the time. You’ll be on the toilet all night today.”

After dinner, Eugene volunteered to do the dishes. Margaret and Allegra sat on the sofa, watching television.

Isaac said he had overeaten and wanted to go on a walk. He then walked outside, a cigarette hanging from his mouth.

Margaret watched Isaac’s disappearing figure. Then, she glanced at the clock. It was almost time; it should kick in after another half an hour.

Soon, Isaac returned. He went to the kitchen and made three cups of hot tea. He gave Allegra and Eugene a cup each while he drank the last one.

After half an hour, Margaret suddenly frowned and covered her belly with her hand.

Her stomach rumbled as waves of cramps hit her, making her unable to sit still.

She turned to look at the others, who seemed fine.
