CHAPTER 8: SHATTERED ILLUSIONS
last update2025-01-27 18:56:08

Kiera’s eyes fluttered open, her vision swimming as she tried to make sense

of the world around her. The air smelled of smoke, the remnants of explosions

still hanging in the dust-filled atmosphere. Her head throbbed, the aftermath

of the shockwave pulling her back into the harsh reality of the battlefield. She

pushed herself up, her muscles stiff and aching, her breath ragged as she

tried to regain her composure.

She was on the ground. The rebels were closing in. But something was wrong.

The silence was unnerving, broken only by the soft hum of the weapon’s

energy within her.

“What happened?” Kiera murmured to herself, her hand instinctively reaching

for her sidearm. She was still alive, but she couldn’t remember what had

happened after the explosion.

The battlefield was eerily quiet. The rebels had either retreated or were lying

in wait, but Kiera didn’t have time to figure it out. She was still feeling the

pull of the weapon, its power surging through her veins like wildfire.

The memories of the battle were disjointed, like flashes of light in a storm. She

could remember the last moments before everything went dark—her vision

blurring, the sound of her heartbeat pounding in her ears, the overwhelming

sense that she was slipping, losing herself to the weapon.

And then the darkness had taken her.

Kiera staggered to her feet, her fingers trembling as she wiped the dirt and

dust from her face. She wasn’t sure if the rebels were still a threat, but she

had no choice. She had to get back to Jace, to the control center. The weapon

was too dangerous. She couldn’t let it consume her.

But as she looked around, she realized the truth. The weapon had already

changed her.

Her mind felt sharper, more attuned to the world around her. She could feel

the energy of Mars itself, vibrating through the ground beneath her. It was

like a constant hum, an undercurrent of life and power that she could tap

into. She could sense the movement of the rebels, even though they were still

hidden. She could hear their thoughts, feel their emotions. The power of the

weapon was leaking out of her, shaping everything she touched.

She closed her eyes and took a deep breath, trying to block out the voices, the

visions. She had to regain control. She had to stop the weapon from taking

her completely. Kiera’s head snapped toward the horizon, her senses on high alert. There, in

the distance, she saw something moving—a figure, standing in the shadow of

the control center. She felt a sudden surge of energy, as if the weapon itself

had recognized the presence of this person.

Jace.

Her heart skipped a beat. She had to get to him. The connection between

them, forged through countless battles and struggles, was stronger than ever.

But now, with the weapon coursing through her, she could feel him as if he

were right next to her. The pull was magnetic, a bond she couldn’t break, even

if she tried.

She didn’t want to try.

Kiera broke into a run, the adrenaline surging through her. Her steps were

faster, her movements more fluid, as if she were being propelled by an unseen

force. The dust kicked up around her as she sprinted toward the control

center, her mind focused on the one person she knew she couldn’t lose.

The closer she got to the control center, the stronger the feeling of unease

grew. Something wasn’t right. The air was thick with tension, the usual hum

of activity in the facility replaced by an unnatural stillness. She reached the

doors, her pulse quickening. They slid open with a soft hiss, revealing an

empty, dimly lit hallway. The faint hum of the power systems in the distance

was the only sound.

“Jace?” Kiera called, her voice low but urgent. There was no answer.

She moved deeper into the facility, every step echoing in the silence. She

couldn’t shake the feeling that she was being watched, that something was

waiting for her. The weapon’s presence within her was more than just a

physical sensation—it was an awareness, a deep knowing that the planet itself

was alive, aware of her every move.

As Kiera made her way down the corridor, she found the door to the control

room slightly ajar. She pushed it open, her breath catching in her throat as

she stepped inside.

The control room was In chaos.

Panels were flashing with red alerts, and the screens were filled with static.

The lights flickered above her, casting long shadows across the room. But

what caught Kiera’s attention wasn’t the malfunctioning equipment—it was

the figure standing at the center of the room, their back to her.

Jace.

He was staring at one of the main consoles, his face illuminated by the

flickering lights. But as Kiera stepped closer, she noticed something strange. His eyes were wide open, but they were vacant, unseeing. His hands were

raised in the air, fingers splayed out as if he were manipulating something

unseen.

“Jace?” Kiera’s voice trembled. “What’s happening?”

Jace didn’t respond. Instead, his body seemed to twitch, his movements jerky

and unnatural. Kiera’s heart sank as she realized the truth—Jace wasn’t in

control of himself.

The weapon. It had found him.

“No,” Kiera whispered, the word barely audible as the horror of the situation

hit her. “I… I didn’t mean for this to happen.”

The power within her surged, responding to her emotions, to her fear. She

could feel the weapon growing stronger, its energy filling the room like a storm

ready to break. But Kiera wasn’t sure how much more she could take. The

line between her and the weapon was fading, and now, it was taking Jace too.

Kiera’s hand shot out, her fingers trembling as she tried to reach for him. But

as she did, the weapon’s power flared. The lights In the room flickered

violently, and the hum of energy became deafening. Kiera’s vision blurred as

the power enveloped her once more, her body wracked with the force of it.

For a brief moment, she saw Jace’s eyes snap back to life, but they were no

longer his own. They were the eyes of someone—or something—else. His body

jerked toward her, and Kiera felt an overwhelming sense of dread wash over

her.

“You cannot stop it,” a voice whispered, but it wasn’t Jace’s. It was the voice

of the weapon, cold and insistent. “You will be ours, too.”

Kiera’s hand clenched into a fist. She wasn’t going to let this happen. She

couldn’t lose him. Not like this.

With everything she had left, Kiera forced herself to focus, pulling all of her

remaining strength into one final push. The energy inside her surged to a

breaking point, and with a scream of defiance, she hurled the power outward.

The blast shook the room, throwing both her and Jace to the floor. The silence

that followed was deafening, the air thick with the aftermath of the explosion.

When Kiera opened her eyes, the room was still. The flickering lights had

ceased, and the control center’s screens were now blank.

Jace lay on the floor, motionless.
