Kenneth squinted his gaze. "Paul Ryder died in a house fire and was buried 2 years ago."
Jackson’s heart broke in grief and sadness.
His father had been his role model when he was young, taking him everywhere, teaching him all sorts of things before he suddenly disappeared. Turns out he’d been alive all this while, but only just died 2 years ago.
"It was due to my careless mistake, Master Jackson.” Kenneth lowered his head. “We discovered that the accident was actually set up by some of his long-time enemies, but before we could discover, it was too late! Till now, we haven’t been able to find proper evidence, we hope that with Master’s return. His father’s passing wouldn’t be in vain.”
“You have a suspect?” Jackson was shocked.
“Yes,” His eyes glinted with fury. “An old-time friend of Master Paul.”
Jackson’s memories could only conjure up one face- Luka Wilson, Miranda’s father, and once his father’s business partner.
Suspiciously, Luka had also gone missing around the same time his father did.
"What date did the fire happen?" Jackson gritted his teeth.
"February the 2nd, two years ago.”
“Since then, we've been on a search for you, Master. I just happened to be at the bar when you were challenged by Kane. I was so sure you were the one when you came out victorious!" Kenneth gave a deep smile. "The pendant confirms it all, you're exactly like your father."
Jackson stared down at the man in front of him, his heart thumping. Why did he feel like there was a secret meaning to what he just said?
Today alone, he'd lost his wife and found out his father was dead. What else could be in store for him?
"Thanks for the news, I'll take my leave now."
"Master Jackson." Kenneth stopped him hastily. "Your father willed his entire shipping company to you, you're the next CEO in line for Ryder&Wil Group of Companies!"
"What?"
"With a net-worth of 15 billion dollars, you have several subsidiaries which are named under the Ryder&Wil Empire. The Kitts-Well Corps, Hutton Group of companies, Galaxy Entertainment, Hotel de Lux, Largesse Corporations, Lann Pharmaceuticals and even the Owells Shopping Malls are all subsidiaries under us. Your father planned a lot of expansion and investment, and we need his direct heir to take over ASAP!”
"Really?" Jackson quipped. The big companies this man just mentioned were no jokes. Just being listed was suffocating enough, why does everything feel so weird?
"Please come with me." Kenneth bowed and led the way to the car.
Suddenly, a black figure whooshed from the road behind them, placing a sharp knife against Kenneth’s neck. The atmosphere suddenly became tensed.
His bodyguards pointed their pistols at the stranger.
"Let him go and tell your men stand back!" the stranger yelled.
"its fine, Slade. They're not abducting me." Jackson patted the stranger, giving him a signal.
"Boss, are you sure?" Slade let Kenneth go.
"I'll be back soon." Jackson waved his hand. Slade nodded and whooshed off like lightning.
He nodded at Kenneth and got into the car, thinking back to his parents. The only relative he had left was his grandmother.
The car stopped at a luxurious mansion surrounded by a beautiful well-mowed garden, a swimming pool at the center, a tennis court in the yard, and even a large golf field. Jackson had never quite seen anything like this.
All the helpers bowed, as they made their way up the stairs into a large study.
Kenneth pulled out a chair for him before walking over to retrieve a picture from the cabinet. "Your father, along with his best friend, Luka Wilson."
Jackson stared hard at his father's face, before shifting his eyes to the grim face of Miranda's father. Even though there was a few years age difference between them, they seemed to have a strong bond.
A wary sensation filled Jackson’s heart as he stared more and more at Luka’s face. Those eyes held suspicion and a strong intent-
"Luka Wilson is also dead.” Kenneth added coldly. “Although we do not know what really happened, we’re sure he was also in that fire. Mysteriously, we received a news that he is dead, and true he died of an heart attack last year and was buried. His son, Morgan, is next in line as his successor. Morgan is currently abroad taking care of some fundamental company matters."
Jackson rubbed his chin in thought.
He recalled the day that Luka returned home with half of his clothes burnt. Wait! That was on February 2nd! He could recall clearly, as it was the day Miranda fainted from over-working.
Luka had been in the fire with his father, but how did he manage to escape?
"We should call Morgan and inform all the stakeholders of your return, Master."
"No. No." Jackson hurriedly muttered. "It's too dangerous to come in the open, let's lie low for a while. I'm sure there are several people gunning for that CEO position."
"Yeah. We have quite a few." Kenneth frowned. "Morgan should know his place."
Jackson stood up abruptly. If his line of thoughts was correct, Morgan might turn out to be an enemy. "I'll take my leave now."
Kenneth bowed deeply again. "Okay, Master. I'll arrange for a driver to drop you off.”
Throwing one last look at his father’s mansion, he headed his base.
When his father disappeared, he'd met an old man named Adrian living at an abandoned barracks outside the city. Adrian had taken him in as a son, teaching him martial arts, Western and Chinese Medicine, Astrology and even cooking.
And when Master Adrian died, Jackson recruited bandits and homeless men who were ready to learn, teaching them martial arts, astrology and a bit of medicine.
While at the Wilson’s residence, he made out time every 3 days to visit and check-up on his men as they went on several missions for clients. Jackson had a ring of rich men that would offer to pay them for bodyguard services, or even rescuing a family member. As a doctor, he also provided services to rich clients who had severe medical issues.
This way, he made a substantial amount of money, and his fame spread through the city under the guise of ‘Grand Doctor Jack’. Over the years, he’d managed to keep such a low profile that no one, not even the Wilson’s could have guessed he was the hidden Grand Master.
When Jackson arrived, it was almost dark but all his men were outside to welcome him back.
"Welcome, Boss." they bowed.
Jackson was glad to be back home, away from the drama of the Wilsons. He gave nods of approval and made his way in.
His 2nd in command, Slade hurried beside him. "Boss. Who was that old man back there?"
"It's a long story, Slade. I'll have you bring some hard liquor up to the study, there's a lot to discuss." Jackson flashed him a smile, then hurried to his room to have a shower.
He got dressed and headed to the study, flipping through some documents as he waited.
The door burst open and Slade rushed in with a wary expression. "Bad news, Boss."
"What is it?" Jackson stood up in panic.
"The matriarch of the Wilson family is here, and she's swearing to bring down the house if she doesn't meet with you!"
Jackson's ears perked up. Did that old hag follow him here?Shit! What if she had discovered who he was?"No." Slade read through his thoughts. “The woman seems to have a back injury, and she's swearing not to leave until she meets Doctor Jack.” Jackson clenched his teeth in frustration. News of his exceptional medical abilities had spread across the city. Almost every day someone would barge in, demanding to see him at all costs. "What should we do, Boss? She's throwing a very loud tantrum." Slade asked again. Jackson cracked his brain. Then he thought of something. "Get me the mask, my kit and some anesthetic needles." He grabbed his coat, just as Slade returned with the instruments. Jackson made his way into the guest sitting room. Anna Wilson was still screaming in a livid voice. "I need to see Doctor Jack! My back really hurts since I had an accident this morning, I can barely manage to stand. Please help me. I'll pay any amount!""Ma'am, you have to understand, the Doctor
"Whatever happens, you can’t go back on your word!" Jackson warned. Isaac smirked cruelly. "In a few minutes, you’ll be the one kowtowing and begging me to spare your life!" For the sake of Miranda, he'd bribed some core officials at Hutton Group and they’d drafted out the contract with her name already. The stakeholders meeting was just mere formality. Miranda nudged Isaac, trying to warn him to be careful.Jackson didn't seem like the reserved man that used to be her husband, he now had a cold, domineering aura that sends chills down her spine. They all turned their gazes to the TV as a reporter live at the conference hall spoke. He began with the History of the Hutton Group, what the Axel Contract was all about, several companies that had won in the past, and the several benefits the winning company would enjoy. Debra's palm started to itch with excitement. She couldn't help but stare at Isaac in awe and admiration. A loud voice came from the door, stunning everyone away from
"Not good! Not good!" Jackson kept muttering as he got into a taxi.According to the reports Kenneth sent him, Morgan was abroad settling the differences between two conflicting subsidiary company. This was something expected to take him a month or two.Why was he returning now? Something was fishy. Jackson hurried the driver along, trying to play out several scenarios in his mind. And soon, they arrived at the entrance of Hotel De Lux. This Hotel was one of the most luxurious 5-stars in the whole of Chicago with nice terrains, gardens, swimming pools, tennis court and even a golf field.Jackson didn't have time to admire all that, he just dashed to the entrance, trying to make his way in when he was stopped by a security guard. "Hey, where are you going?" he frowned, gawking condescendingly at his poor clothes."I'm here to see Mr Kenneth." Jackson replied in a haste. The guard scoffed. "How could someone like you meet Mr Kenneth?”“Even the CEO of Hotel De Lux very rarely sees h
The footsteps approaching pulled up dread in Jackson’s heart, but he managed to keep his stoic expression. "Mr. Robins has arrived with a companion." A guard announced at the door before the two men stepped in. Jackson didn't miss the sudden drain of color on Kenneth’s face. He got up, eyes on the first man that stepped in. "Y. . .You're here?""Of course, I should. Didn't think you could leave me out, did you?" The tall man replied, before striding forward to stop in front of Jackson. Jet-black hair, strong jawline and small sunken eyes that scrutinized Jackson’s entire outfit before coming back up to his face. "You sure look like a Ryder. I'm Owen Robins, a current shareholder at the Hutton Group, and one of your father’s confidant. Nice to meet you."Jackson accepted the handshake, a strange feeling twirling in the pit of his stomach.Owen exchanged another glance with Kenneth before taking his seat. "What're you still doing there standing by the door?" He squinted at a young
The following morning, Jackson got up early to prepare for work.Kenneth had assured him that he could get any job at the Hutton Group. He needed to start getting himself familiar with his father's company. He quickly had his bath, and headed down for breakfast where Slade was already waiting. "Any update?""Apart from the brief conversation Morgan had with his father last night, we tracked him to his apartment in Cooles Estate, that's all.""Hmm." Jackson picked up his fork as Slade re-played the recording. Morgan's conversation with his father was nothing special, it only helped to confirm that Luka Wilson was still alive. All through the night, Jackson had replayed the day's events in his head. Why exactly did Kenneth lie about Luka's death? No matter how he tried to think about it, all the story didn't match up. He couldn't trust anything the man said again. "Boss, what do we do about the Wilson's matriarch? She hasn't still woken up."A small smirk tugged at the corner of J
Jackson watched the secretary carry out the last boxes belonging to Emerald. He was finally here, in his father's company, and he didn't even know how to feel about it. Happy that he was finally taking his place? Or sad that he had missed out on a lot for so long? Jackson relaxed back on his swivel chair, picking up a page from the report Kenneth had mailed to him. It was the annual report detailing the income, expenses and financial position of Wil-Ryder Enterprises. Arriving here for the first time, he had to do a financial audit, to make sure he was starting on the right foot. Jackson was totally immersed in his work when a knock sounded on his door.It was his new secretary, Carmen. "Sir, I forgot to inform you earlier. There is a board meeting holding in the next 20 minutes, and since you just arrived, Mr Xander wants you to introduce yourself to the board of directors."Jackson could sense the motive behind Xander's suggestion. For him to face the board members and answer
Jackson narrowed his domineering gaze at the matriarch. "Are you sure of what you just said? That Luka is dead?""Of course!" Anna stuttered, scratching her gray hair. "Why would I lie about the death of my own child?""This means you agree that he was the one that killed my father?""What?" It took a while for Anna to understand what he just said. "Your father died in the fire, how's that my son's fault?""You just agreed that they both died in the same fire. According to the reports from witnesses, Luka was the one that stabbed Paul to death in that fire!" Jackson slammed the police reports in front of her. "Since you just admitted the truth, I'm willing to re-open this case for investigation!"The documents fell from Anna's trembling hands. "What do you mean?""Exactly what I said. Luka's body will be dug up and put on trial!" "What? That's impossible!" A wave of fear rushed over her. "I just told you Luka didn't kill your father, in fact my son didn't die in that fire!""He's st
"Get out of my office right now!" Jackson didn't take it lying with Isaac and his son. "Who do you think you are to speak to my father in such a way?" Nicholas was quick to push Jackson backward. "I'm not going to repeat myself. I said, get out of my office!" Jackson pressed the emergency bell and a few seconds later guards came rushing in. "You might have escaped this now, but I promise you won't escape for long!" Isaac slammed at him and stormed out. Jackson sat down on his chair to pack up his files. It was almost time for the board meeting and he planned to present the reports he had gathered. Isaac Moore had misappropriated a total of one million dollars of funds! 30 mins later, the meeting began with Xander more quiet than usual. This time, Mr Ernestine was the one that took the floor. "Like we spoke the last time, we tried to consider the proposal of increment of the prices of our products. My Ryder here was one of the persons that spoke against it. Can we have him take
