"Whatever happens, you can’t go back on your word!" Jackson warned.
Isaac smirked cruelly. "In a few minutes, you’ll be the one kowtowing and begging me to spare your life!"
For the sake of Miranda, he'd bribed some core officials at Hutton Group and they’d drafted out the contract with her name already. The stakeholders meeting was just mere formality.
Miranda nudged Isaac, trying to warn him to be careful.
Jackson didn't seem like the reserved man that used to be her husband, he now had a cold, domineering aura that sends chills down her spine.
They all turned their gazes to the TV as a reporter live at the conference hall spoke.
He began with the History of the Hutton Group, what the Axel Contract was all about, several companies that had won in the past, and the several benefits the winning company would enjoy.
Debra's palm started to itch with excitement. She couldn't help but stare at Isaac in awe and admiration.
A loud voice came from the door, stunning everyone away from the TV. "Ahhh, it's good to be home-"
Jackson checked his watch as Miranda’s mother stepped in with a few extended family.
"What is this miser doing here?" Janet was the first to shriek, her face contouring in anger.
"Miranda, did you invite him over?" Corry, Miranda’s uncle asked, frowning as she studied his clothing. Pft! Still as poor as ever!
"I'm here to watch the proceedings of the Hutton Group with my ex-wife." Jackson grinned. "I was originally supposed to leave a few minutes earlier, but Mr Moore promised to kowtow if she didn't get the contract."
Janet had a grasp of the situation. "Being useless isn't enough, you dare ask the Manager of Hutton Group to bow to you? Humph, this might be the death of you!" she hollered.
"What're the guards doing? Come in here and drag this fool out!"
"Let him be, mother. I won't spare him when Miranda wins." Isaac waved her to calm down, just as the ad came to an end on the screen.
The reporter was shown again. "At the climax of the meeting, the stakeholders decided to give a special company a 5-year long contract, and access to the VVIP Bank card of Hutton Group. The company’s name is-"
He glanced down at his paper, a brief wave of surprise flitting past his face. The reporter cleared his throat before continuing. "The stakeholders decided not to award any company the contract. The following companies are to see the GM for further enquiries.” He read out a few names buy Miranda’s company was absent from the list.
The room fell silent and all eyes turned towards Jackson, their hearts banging loudly.
Jackson let out a low laughter. "What happened to ‘I'm the General Manager, and no one can refute my orders?’ How did they not even mention her company, not even acknowledging that she was part of the contestants?"
Everyone turned to Isaac in accusation and his face turned red. "There must have been a mistake somewhere!”
“The meeting was just a formality, they have actually weighed each contestants and taken a closer look at their companies. At the end, Exquisite Corps wasn't mentioned mainly because Miranda is already the winner! What's the point of revealing all your cards to the public?" Isaac spoke in such a confident manner that everyone felt re-assured. He was right, it was probably all due process.
Only Jackson was able to see through his mask. Isaac’s lips were already trembling, his eyes darting around in panic. "Anyways, that has nothing to do with me! Come here and quickly kowtow."
"What?" Everyone gasped in amazement.
Debra was the first to scream. "Didn't you hear what Mr Moore just said, my sister’s company has passed the test! They're only taking their time to announce, why should he bow to you?"
"He gave his word in your presence, didn’t he?” Jackson couldn’t waste his breath on such a silly kid. “Don't try to interfere in adults’ matters!"
"Never!" Janet pulled Isaac behind her. "I don't care about the childish bet you had, you wouldn't dare bring reproach to this family by asking Isaac Moore to bow before you!"
Jackson walked up to Isaac, pushing her away. "What's it? Isaac Moore isn't man enough to keep his word?"
His face turned grim in embarrassment. Glancing at his guards who were lying unconscious after being kicked by Jackson, his heart shuddered.
This man wasn't just a useless son-in-law. How could he have such massive strength and an intimidating aura?
"Go on, or would you like to begin with the slaps?" Jackson nudged him, taking aggressive steps as Isaac kept stepping back.
"I would never..." Isaac gritted his teeth and placed his hands on his breast pocket.
Suddenly a pocket knife swished through the air, and blood dripped on the floor.
"Isaac!"
Everyone stared in a daze.
There was a new figure in the room, protecting Jackson and glaring fiercely at Isaac. "You should watch your mouth, Mister. Before making promises you couldn’t keep!"
Isaac's right arm had been slashed through, dripping blood. He’d tried to attack Jackson with his pocket knife, but this man appeared from nowhere and snatched the knife from him, slashing him instead.
"Who do you think you are?" Isaac tried to grab his collar.
In anger, Slade grabbed his outstretched arm and twisted sharply.
"Let me go! P. . .Please!" His face scrunched up in agony.
"Let go of him, you criminal!" Janet tried to throw herself against Slade, but a single glare from Jackson sent her reeling back in fear.
"Next time, watch your tongue when speaking to Jackson!" He twisted the hand further, until Isaac fell on his knees, pleading.
"Slade." Jackson muttered. "That's enough."
Huffing, he obeyed. Isaac quickly scurried away, escaping in case of another attack.
"Till we meet again, Wilsons!" Jackson sent a last glare at Miranda before leaving.
Outside, he stopped to scold Slade. "Why did you show your face in front of them? Didn't I warn you never to do that?"
Slade gritted, he felt Jackson was being too lenient with this family. "That was back then, when you were still married to Miranda, Boss. You no longer have a connection with these shameless people!"
"No worries. I have a lot in store for the Wilsons, when I’m done with them, they’ll come begging for mercy.” Contrary to what Slade had thought, Jackson wasn’t going to be lenient. He was only taking things slow.
“Either way, you shouldn't be too reckless. We never know who's currently on our tails. Besides, Isaac Moore is a very dangerous man."
Slade bowed deeply. "It will never happen again, Boss."
Jackson sighed and looked away.
"The original reason I came was for an emergency matter.” Slade retrieved a folded piece of paper, handing it over. “An urgent message arrived from Mr Kenneth.”
Jackson opened it. It contained a sentence.
‘Meet me at Hotel De Lux ASAP. Morgan is arriving the country soon.’
"Not good! Not good!" Jackson kept muttering as he got into a taxi.According to the reports Kenneth sent him, Morgan was abroad settling the differences between two conflicting subsidiary company. This was something expected to take him a month or two.Why was he returning now? Something was fishy. Jackson hurried the driver along, trying to play out several scenarios in his mind. And soon, they arrived at the entrance of Hotel De Lux. This Hotel was one of the most luxurious 5-stars in the whole of Chicago with nice terrains, gardens, swimming pools, tennis court and even a golf field.Jackson didn't have time to admire all that, he just dashed to the entrance, trying to make his way in when he was stopped by a security guard. "Hey, where are you going?" he frowned, gawking condescendingly at his poor clothes."I'm here to see Mr Kenneth." Jackson replied in a haste. The guard scoffed. "How could someone like you meet Mr Kenneth?”“Even the CEO of Hotel De Lux very rarely sees h
The footsteps approaching pulled up dread in Jackson’s heart, but he managed to keep his stoic expression. "Mr. Robins has arrived with a companion." A guard announced at the door before the two men stepped in. Jackson didn't miss the sudden drain of color on Kenneth’s face. He got up, eyes on the first man that stepped in. "Y. . .You're here?""Of course, I should. Didn't think you could leave me out, did you?" The tall man replied, before striding forward to stop in front of Jackson. Jet-black hair, strong jawline and small sunken eyes that scrutinized Jackson’s entire outfit before coming back up to his face. "You sure look like a Ryder. I'm Owen Robins, a current shareholder at the Hutton Group, and one of your father’s confidant. Nice to meet you."Jackson accepted the handshake, a strange feeling twirling in the pit of his stomach.Owen exchanged another glance with Kenneth before taking his seat. "What're you still doing there standing by the door?" He squinted at a young
The following morning, Jackson got up early to prepare for work.Kenneth had assured him that he could get any job at the Hutton Group. He needed to start getting himself familiar with his father's company. He quickly had his bath, and headed down for breakfast where Slade was already waiting. "Any update?""Apart from the brief conversation Morgan had with his father last night, we tracked him to his apartment in Cooles Estate, that's all.""Hmm." Jackson picked up his fork as Slade re-played the recording. Morgan's conversation with his father was nothing special, it only helped to confirm that Luka Wilson was still alive. All through the night, Jackson had replayed the day's events in his head. Why exactly did Kenneth lie about Luka's death? No matter how he tried to think about it, all the story didn't match up. He couldn't trust anything the man said again. "Boss, what do we do about the Wilson's matriarch? She hasn't still woken up."A small smirk tugged at the corner of J
Jackson watched the secretary carry out the last boxes belonging to Emerald. He was finally here, in his father's company, and he didn't even know how to feel about it. Happy that he was finally taking his place? Or sad that he had missed out on a lot for so long? Jackson relaxed back on his swivel chair, picking up a page from the report Kenneth had mailed to him. It was the annual report detailing the income, expenses and financial position of Wil-Ryder Enterprises. Arriving here for the first time, he had to do a financial audit, to make sure he was starting on the right foot. Jackson was totally immersed in his work when a knock sounded on his door.It was his new secretary, Carmen. "Sir, I forgot to inform you earlier. There is a board meeting holding in the next 20 minutes, and since you just arrived, Mr Xander wants you to introduce yourself to the board of directors."Jackson could sense the motive behind Xander's suggestion. For him to face the board members and answer
Jackson narrowed his domineering gaze at the matriarch. "Are you sure of what you just said? That Luka is dead?""Of course!" Anna stuttered, scratching her gray hair. "Why would I lie about the death of my own child?""This means you agree that he was the one that killed my father?""What?" It took a while for Anna to understand what he just said. "Your father died in the fire, how's that my son's fault?""You just agreed that they both died in the same fire. According to the reports from witnesses, Luka was the one that stabbed Paul to death in that fire!" Jackson slammed the police reports in front of her. "Since you just admitted the truth, I'm willing to re-open this case for investigation!"The documents fell from Anna's trembling hands. "What do you mean?""Exactly what I said. Luka's body will be dug up and put on trial!" "What? That's impossible!" A wave of fear rushed over her. "I just told you Luka didn't kill your father, in fact my son didn't die in that fire!""He's st
"Get out of my office right now!" Jackson didn't take it lying with Isaac and his son. "Who do you think you are to speak to my father in such a way?" Nicholas was quick to push Jackson backward. "I'm not going to repeat myself. I said, get out of my office!" Jackson pressed the emergency bell and a few seconds later guards came rushing in. "You might have escaped this now, but I promise you won't escape for long!" Isaac slammed at him and stormed out. Jackson sat down on his chair to pack up his files. It was almost time for the board meeting and he planned to present the reports he had gathered. Isaac Moore had misappropriated a total of one million dollars of funds! 30 mins later, the meeting began with Xander more quiet than usual. This time, Mr Ernestine was the one that took the floor. "Like we spoke the last time, we tried to consider the proposal of increment of the prices of our products. My Ryder here was one of the persons that spoke against it. Can we have him take
In less than 5 minutes, the board room was thrown into commotion as the police arrived to drag the crime perpetrators away. "Let go of me, I didn't take any money! These men are just scheming to pull me down!" One of the board members, Mr Roman was very loud. "What do you mean by scheming against you?" Isaac slammed at him. "Weren't you the one that brought the idea of keeping the leftover money for ourselves?""What? I didn't" Before Roman could object completely, Isaac slammed a photo evidence on the table which sent him mute. "You're a snake, Isaac! Why did you have to drag me into this? Wasn't I on my own when you brought the proposal, forcing me to join?" Another man, Mr Jacob complained angrily. "I forced you until you got the first payment. After then, who kept disturbing me to get the deal?" Isaac slammed back at him. "You!" All the implicated board members were unable to speak again.Objecting to Isaac would just lead to the exposure of more evidence. "You're going to p
"Yes, I did. I awarded the contract to a company more deserving of it. What will you do about that?" Jackson glared coldly at Miranda. "You did what?" Her VP, Henry came out of nowhere looking perplexed. "You should blame your VP for not honoring the requirements of the contract when I visited the company." Jackson said to Miranda. "Now that I've answered your question, leave!""That's impossible!" Miranda turned her fierce glare on Henry. "I still refuse to believe that this creep is the General Manager at Hutton Group? How did he get the position?""Guards!" Jackson didn't have more time to waste. "Drag them out, and never let such unruly people into this company again!""You can't throw me out!" Miranda was adamant. "How can you do this, we were once married remember? You know how much this Axel deal means to me!" "Can't you even consider the times we spent together?""Jackson. If you don't reverse this decision, I'll make sure you never enjoy your stay at this company! You're g
