The following morning, Jackson got up early to prepare for work.
Kenneth had assured him that he could get any job at the Hutton Group. He needed to start getting himself familiar with his father's company.
He quickly had his bath, and headed down for breakfast where Slade was already waiting.
"Any update?"
"Apart from the brief conversation Morgan had with his father last night, we tracked him to his apartment in Cooles Estate, that's all."
"Hmm." Jackson picked up his fork as Slade re-played the recording.
Morgan's conversation with his father was nothing special, it only helped to confirm that Luka Wilson was still alive.
All through the night, Jackson had replayed the day's events in his head.
Why exactly did Kenneth lie about Luka's death?
No matter how he tried to think about it, all the story didn't match up. He couldn't trust anything the man said again.
"Boss, what do we do about the Wilson's matriarch? She hasn't still woken up."
A small smirk tugged at the corner of Jackson's lips. "Let's have them panic a little."
Jackson got into his Sedan, driving straight for the headquarters of the Hutton Group.
The Hutton Group specializes with the production of textiles. They had the factory and administrative headquarters in separate buildings. Isaac Moore was the Manager of Hutton Factories, while a man named Xander Maddox was the Deputy-President of the Hutton Group.
Kenneth had assured him that he could have any position he wanted. But Jackson didn't intend to reveal his identity by being Preaident.
He needed to observe happenings in his company first.
Making his way through the glass revolving doors, Jackson took a few steps into the hall, coming face to face with Isaac Moore.
"And what's the good-for-nothing doing here?" Isaac was smirking, a seductively-dressed girl in his arms.
Jackson ignored him, checking his watch again. Xander was supposed to be here to welcome him.
"Hey, loser. How it been seeing your beloved Miranda trying to please me when you didn't even get her attention?"
Isaac became more aggressive when Jackson didn't even look at him. "Are you deaf? I'm speaking to you!"
"It seems your arm injury healed quickly?" Jackson asked with a cold expression.
"You!" Isaac stepped back cautiously, recalling when Slade injured him.
"You're going to pay with your blood!" He turned around, beckoning to a guard. "Come and drag this man out. He's only here to steal!"
His loud voice attracted the looks of the receptionist, staffs and customers in the hall.
As the head of the factory division, Isaac was well-known and respected. Everyone believed him.
"Hey," the receptionist ran over with a hot scrutinizing gaze. "You must be the one that stole the box of textiles that went missing last week!"
"What?" Jackson was shocked.
"I saw the thief when he came in that day, he was exactly like this man!" Another staff walked up to them.
"You're mistaken, Miss." Jackson scoffed. "I'm only here to see Mr Xander, nothing else."
"Lies!" Isaac butted in. "Two nights ago, this man broke into my wife's house and tried to steal something, then escaped after injuring me. He's probably here to steal something again. Don't let him leave!" Isaac screamed at the Head of Security, who just arrived with a few guards.
The man observed Jackson grimly. "Hey, you're coming with us!" He signaled his men.
"Don't you lay your filthy hands on me!" Jackson was pissed.
How could they all believe he was a thief without evidence?
"I am not here to steal." Jackson warned. "I'm only here to apply for a job with Mr Xander. Anyone that tries to accuse me has to show proof of what I stole!"
"What job are you here to apply for?" The receptionist and other staff burst into laughter. "You're clearly here to steal because there are currently no job openings, and Mr Xander is not in charge of handling new recruits!"
"What a liar!" Someone else butted in.
"You're so useless, Jackson Ryder." Isaac butted in. "After divorcing your wife, you joined a band of criminals and became a thief! Why are you lying?"
The Head of Security grew impatient. "Get him!"
"You wouldn't dare!" Jackson kicked the first person to touch him.
The guard was sent flying several metres away before he hit a pillar and fell face down, unmoving.
Everyone gasped, taking a step backward.
"Apart from being a thief, this man is also a violent murderer. Someone call the police!" The receptionist screamed.
"What is going on here?" A loud authoritative voice boomed through the hall.
Everyone turned to see the Deputy-President, Xander Maddox, scanning the scene with a frown.
"Who did you want to call the police for?" He walked up to face the receptionist.
"Sir, he-" she pointed at Jackson, gulping with fear. Xander had a bad temperament that no one dared to offend him.
"May I ask what you want here?" Xander faced Jackson.
"Jackson Ryder." He handed his ID immediately.
A fierce look flashed across Xander's face before he glanced back at Jackson and scoffed to himself. "So you're the incompetent person Mr Kenneth recommended?"
"Pardon?" Jackson was shocked.
"Nothing, Mr Ryder. Please come with me." Xander scowled.
"But, sir. This man is a thief, he-" the receptionist tried to butt in.
"He's a thief?" Xander echoed, somewhat pleased.
"Y. . .Yes sir. Mr Moore confirmed that-"
"Is that true?" Xander faced Isaac.
Being faced by a senior staff, Isaac was flustered. He personally knew how heartless Xander could be.
"Huh? I never- I mean, why would I call a stranger a thief? We don't know each other." He immediately shook his head.
The receptionist turned pale. "But, sir you-"
"That's enough." Xander said and walked away.
Jackson was stunned at Xander's decision.
That was all? No scolding, no warning, no clearing his name?
"Mr Maddox, those people accused me publicly and almost got me arrested. Isn't there supposed to be at least a reprimand?" He asked, but Xander only scoffed.
"Who knows? You could be a thief."
Jackson went stiff at the man's tone. He saw him for the first time today, why does it seemed like Xander hated him?
Xander brought him to a small office, where a pretty woman was waiting. "Hand him the brochure," he instructed.
The woman eyed Jackson suspiciously, before handing him document. "Those are the list of jobs available."
Jackson frowned. The top among the list was a low-level secretary. Both of them stared at him with displeased expressions.
What exactly did Kenneth tell them?
"I want the position of the General Manager."
"What?" The woman's face went blank. "You want my position?"
"Yes." Jackson had no idea it was her position, but he didn't care.
"Who exactly are you, that Mr Kenneth instructed me to give you a job without any qualifications?" Xander stood up with a frown.
He especially hated people that had no skills but clung to a powerful person to get jobs and appointments!
"Who I am isn't important, what is important is that you follow his orders!" Jackson snapped impatiently at him
A fierce viciousness flashed through Xander's eyes, but he only smirked not saying a word.
"How dare you walk in here and ask for my job? Who do you think you are?" the woman's lips trembled.
"Emerald." Xander tried to calm her down.
"Don't tell me you're going to give him a position I've worked so hard for?" She twirled to yell at him.
"I have no choice." Xander signed the employment letter.
He called in a secretary to have men clear Emerald's things and prepare the office for Jackson.
"Xander." Tears rolled down her pretty face at his words.
"Please come with me, sir." the secretary led Jackson out.
"How could you give my position to someone so incapable, Xander?" Emerald screamed in anger.
"I'm sorry, darling. Please." Xander hurried to wipe her tears. "I don't care who he is to Mr Kenneth. But, for snatching your position and getting on my nerves, I'll make sure he leaves this company in shame!"
Outside, Jackson could only smirk. "Bring it on, Xander."
Jackson watched the secretary carry out the last boxes belonging to Emerald. He was finally here, in his father's company, and he didn't even know how to feel about it. Happy that he was finally taking his place? Or sad that he had missed out on a lot for so long? Jackson relaxed back on his swivel chair, picking up a page from the report Kenneth had mailed to him. It was the annual report detailing the income, expenses and financial position of Wil-Ryder Enterprises. Arriving here for the first time, he had to do a financial audit, to make sure he was starting on the right foot. Jackson was totally immersed in his work when a knock sounded on his door.It was his new secretary, Carmen. "Sir, I forgot to inform you earlier. There is a board meeting holding in the next 20 minutes, and since you just arrived, Mr Xander wants you to introduce yourself to the board of directors."Jackson could sense the motive behind Xander's suggestion. For him to face the board members and answer
Jackson narrowed his domineering gaze at the matriarch. "Are you sure of what you just said? That Luka is dead?""Of course!" Anna stuttered, scratching her gray hair. "Why would I lie about the death of my own child?""This means you agree that he was the one that killed my father?""What?" It took a while for Anna to understand what he just said. "Your father died in the fire, how's that my son's fault?""You just agreed that they both died in the same fire. According to the reports from witnesses, Luka was the one that stabbed Paul to death in that fire!" Jackson slammed the police reports in front of her. "Since you just admitted the truth, I'm willing to re-open this case for investigation!"The documents fell from Anna's trembling hands. "What do you mean?""Exactly what I said. Luka's body will be dug up and put on trial!" "What? That's impossible!" A wave of fear rushed over her. "I just told you Luka didn't kill your father, in fact my son didn't die in that fire!""He's st
"Get out of my office right now!" Jackson didn't take it lying with Isaac and his son. "Who do you think you are to speak to my father in such a way?" Nicholas was quick to push Jackson backward. "I'm not going to repeat myself. I said, get out of my office!" Jackson pressed the emergency bell and a few seconds later guards came rushing in. "You might have escaped this now, but I promise you won't escape for long!" Isaac slammed at him and stormed out. Jackson sat down on his chair to pack up his files. It was almost time for the board meeting and he planned to present the reports he had gathered. Isaac Moore had misappropriated a total of one million dollars of funds! 30 mins later, the meeting began with Xander more quiet than usual. This time, Mr Ernestine was the one that took the floor. "Like we spoke the last time, we tried to consider the proposal of increment of the prices of our products. My Ryder here was one of the persons that spoke against it. Can we have him take
In less than 5 minutes, the board room was thrown into commotion as the police arrived to drag the crime perpetrators away. "Let go of me, I didn't take any money! These men are just scheming to pull me down!" One of the board members, Mr Roman was very loud. "What do you mean by scheming against you?" Isaac slammed at him. "Weren't you the one that brought the idea of keeping the leftover money for ourselves?""What? I didn't" Before Roman could object completely, Isaac slammed a photo evidence on the table which sent him mute. "You're a snake, Isaac! Why did you have to drag me into this? Wasn't I on my own when you brought the proposal, forcing me to join?" Another man, Mr Jacob complained angrily. "I forced you until you got the first payment. After then, who kept disturbing me to get the deal?" Isaac slammed back at him. "You!" All the implicated board members were unable to speak again.Objecting to Isaac would just lead to the exposure of more evidence. "You're going to p
"Yes, I did. I awarded the contract to a company more deserving of it. What will you do about that?" Jackson glared coldly at Miranda. "You did what?" Her VP, Henry came out of nowhere looking perplexed. "You should blame your VP for not honoring the requirements of the contract when I visited the company." Jackson said to Miranda. "Now that I've answered your question, leave!""That's impossible!" Miranda turned her fierce glare on Henry. "I still refuse to believe that this creep is the General Manager at Hutton Group? How did he get the position?""Guards!" Jackson didn't have more time to waste. "Drag them out, and never let such unruly people into this company again!""You can't throw me out!" Miranda was adamant. "How can you do this, we were once married remember? You know how much this Axel deal means to me!" "Can't you even consider the times we spent together?""Jackson. If you don't reverse this decision, I'll make sure you never enjoy your stay at this company! You're g
"What are you talking about?" Jackson shook Miss Betty's shoulders, watching the heavy tears roll down her cheeks. "Your father, he was such a nice man and-?" Betty gasped when she realized she had said something excessive. "You said a man rushed in to save my father that day, but he ended up causing more harm!" Jackson shouted. "Who are you talking about?""I...Huh." Her lips twitched. "Did I say anything like that? I'm sure it was a slip of tongue.""But, you-" Jackson was taken aback. This was something he heard very clearly just now. "Please tell me the truth, Betty. What really happened that day?"She averted her gaze. "I was just lamenting how good of a person your father was. The night he died I had gone home for the weekend when I got a call that the house had caught fire!""By the time I arrived, the fire fighters had arrived and your father's corpse was just being brought out.""There was a large knife gash on his neck, the police said he was almost dead when that final st
"Yes, Boss." Slade nodded gravely. "I actually sent some men to intercept the buyers at the black market, but they were attacked and brutally injured.""What?" Jackson was more than appalled. "Who dares to hurt my men? Have you discovered who they are? Where's the housekeeper now?""Betty managed to escape." Slade gritted. "All the men were injured, so no one was able to run after her.""I knew it! I knew that woman was not being sincere the first moment set my eyes on her." Jackson was so upset. "That sculpture cost my father a lot of money, I can't just let it go like that!""Boss, we-" Slade was interrupted by a phone call. He took an excuse and left, returning shortly after with a big frown. "There's trouble, Boss. The men that bought the Kneiss sculpture are members of the Dark Alphas.""And so what?" Jackson hissed angrily. The Dark Alpha was a notorious cult group involved with kidnappings, stealing, organ and drug trafficking and various criminal activities in the black marke
The next day, Jackson arrived at the office early to begin preparations. He had to supervise the first production they were having with Belare Corps. From here, they had to gauge how responsive the public was to the new products. With this, Jackson was quickly immersed into work that he didn't realize there was a commotion outside the company gates. The head Security suddenly rushed in. "Sir, we need your presence right now!""What's wrong?" Jackson frowned, not wanting to be distracted from his work. "Some set of young people are outside, protesting and calling you a manipulator, liar and cruel person!"Jackson removes his glasses. "And who are these people?"The man faltered. "I can't say, Boss. You have to come see yourself!"Jackson had no choice than to follow behind him outside the gates where he met a spectacular scene. Debra Wilson was outside there, yelling inyo a megaphone and holding a poster filled with malicious lies about him.She was surrounded by a few teenage girl
