About one hour later Mira woke up with a yawn, her eyes squinting at the sunlight which had seeped through the cracks in the windows into the room. This made her slightly upset as she wanted to have more sleep but this was made difficult by the sunlight which was seeping into the room. Even when she tried to close her eyes it was difficult to shut the sunlight out.

"The only day we're not attacked by assassins this sunlight won't let me sleep!" Mira grumbled as she turned over, facing another direction where the sunlight wouldn't hit her eyes. She was about to go to sleep again when a pair of hands grabbed her, forcing her up.

"I really need to have more sleep!" Mira complained, struggling to stay in bed but she couldn't match the other party's strength. In the end, she was pulled out of bed, facing Ezra who had a serious expression as usual.

"I'm serious when I say we really need to have some sleep!" Mira said as she broke free from Ezra's grip, attempting to go back to bed. "We only get to sleep in a bed once in a while."

"I know about that but we still have a lot of things ahead of us," Ezra said. "Are you forgetting our utmost goal in life?"

"Which is?" Mira asked, focusing on Ezra as she began combing her hair with her fingers.

"Don't tell me you forgot," Ezra frowned slightly.

"I wouldn't be asking you if I remembered," Mira replied as she rolled her eyes.

Why is this woman like this? Ezra thought within himself as he resisted the urge to do a facepalm. I'm having difficulties communicating with her as the day goes by...I'm beginning to reconsider entering a relationship with her!

"Alright," Ezra waved his hands, not daring to say what he had been thinking just now to Mira. "Our goal is to become the most powerful Cultivators in the world."

"That's a lofty ambition which suits only you," Mira said. "Because actually, I'm a normal martial artist...not a Cultivator like you."

"Whatever," Ezra said. "The thing is that you understand what I'm trying to say, don't you?"

"If I say I don't you'd see me as an idiot," Mira rolled her eyes. This made Ezra to chuckle a little before resuming his stern expression.

Ezra was about to say something when Mira took the initiative to ask, "If I may ask, why do you want to become the most powerful martial artist in the world? You don't seem like a type who wants to become a tyrant, do you?"

"Me? A tyrant? No, I can never be a tyrant," Ezra shook his head. "I'm not pursuing power in order to become a tyrant."

That's just what I said earlier, Mira thought within herself but she didn't say it out loud. Instead, she asked, "Then why do you want to become the most powerful person in this world?"

Ezra clenched his fists as he turned to face the window, "So that I will be able to protect those whom I love..."

When Mira heard this she became very quiet as she fell into a deep thought while staring at the back of Ezra's head. She didn't know why but she suddenly became emotional hearing Ezra say this.

"I was very weak and that's why I couldn't stop my sect from being destroyed," Ezra continued after a brief pause. "I watched as everyone I knew and cared about was killed while being able to do nothing. Even I fell by their swords because I was a weakling back then..."

When he made the last statement he turned to look at Mira before continuing, "And do you know the funny thing?"

When faced with this sudden question, Mira didn't know how to respond so she immediately shook her head as she said, "No I don't."

"The funny thing is that despite all the missions I have to take from the Echelon system and all the rewards I'm getting, I'm still not powerful enough," Ezra said with a sad tone. "I'm still a tier two fighter in the eyes of everyone. At most, I stand at the peak of tier two but that's all to it. If I'm to face a tier three fighter I'm not confident I'd be able to defeat him. It would be because of my abilities that I would be able to escape with my life..."

"I understand your feeling of helplessness but there's still time to grow," Mira said as she walked towards Ezra. "You don't have to feel devastated because you consider yourself very weak. If you ever think yourself to be weak, there are those way weaker than you are..."

Ezra let out a deep sigh after hearing that without saying a word. So Mira continued, "So you need to cheer up and stop feeling sad about what you can change, Ezra. You're even lucky to have the Echelon system. What about me who doesn't even have a system?"

"You're lucky to have a teacher," Ezra flashed a smile. "A very good teacher."

"And you're very lucky to have a great student," Mira smiled as she hugged Ezra. "So don't think about it too much."

Ezra nodded before falling into a deep silence. But that didn't mean he wasn't still worried about getting more powerful. There were a lot of things he couldn't accomplish and threats he couldn't vanquish because of his tier right now. The only way he could achieve everything in his mind was by becoming more powerful.

I really need to start asking the Echelon system for missions instead of waiting for it to casually initiate missions for me, Ezra thought within himself as he hugged Mira more closely. Training in the forest is not enough to become very powerful...

"Mira, I'm very lucky to have you," he finally spoke after some moments, whispering into Mira's ears. He didn't know why he made that statement at the moment but he didn't care anyway.

The Council was enormous, and every time Ezra entered its vast halls, he felt a wave of awe wash over him. The Council Hall, hewn from the ancient white cliffs, was like the heart of the continent, where all power, authority, and tradition came together. The ceilings soared high above, adorned with detailed murals that told the stories of the Four Sects. Sunlight streamed through narrow, stained-glass windows, creating colorful patterns on the marble floors. As Ezra strolled down the hallway, the sound of his footsteps mingled with those of the guards, his tutors, and the quiet maids trailing behind him. Ezra found himself at the center of this little group, his eyes wandering to take in every detail of the hall. Tall banners lined the walls, each one representing one of the Four. The striking emerald green emblem of the Echelon sect stood out the most—a tree with branches that seemed to reach endlessly. It was displayed at every entrance, a constant reminder of the values the sect

Ezra woke up to loud laughter and the sound of metal clinking. His head throbbed, a dull pain spreading behind his eyes like a hammer hitting his skull. He tried to move, but his body wouldn’t listen. Panic rose in his chest."What—"He blinked to clear his vision and looked around. His arms were tied behind him to a thick wooden post. The rough rope pressed painfully into his wrists with every small movement. The air was heavy, smelling of damp grass and sweat, and a cold wind chilled his exposed skin.It took a moment for Ezra to understand where he was: in a wide, open clearing surrounded by towering trees that stood like silent guards. The noon sun cast long shadows on the ground, revealing figures that Ezra recognized."No," he whispered.Tied to similar posts nearby were his family: his father, tall and proud even in this situation, his head lowered; his mother, her long hair messy, eyes shut as if she were still unconscious; and his two sisters, Lila and Mirel, looking small an

As the warriors approached, Ezra noticed his family stirring. His siblings looked confused, but his parents had expressions that suggested they had anticipated this moment. Their eyes were filled with bitterness as they turned to Lorrin, who stared back at them with a blank expression."You... it was you?" Ezra's mother whispered, a mix of defiance and disbelief in her voice."Be quiet, woman!" Lorrin commanded, and a heavy silence followed. The atmosphere was thick with tension, broken only by the wind rustling the dry grass. Ezra felt the ropes digging into his wrists, binding him to the post. His sisters whimpered softly beside him, and his mother offered them a reassuring smile. Ezra's last sight before darkness enveloped him was his father's head hitting the blood-stained ground.A scream tore through the quiet plains, Ezra's voice raw and endless, filled with a loss too heavy to bear. No one rushed to calm him.The soldiers lingering near the execution site exchanged uneasy glances, their expressions hardening. They were familiar with death and despair; this was just another victim in the ongoing cycle of power and betrayal.Yet, Ezra's cries were different. They weren't the desperate pleas of a man seeking mercy or the broken sobs of someone succumbing to grief. His voice held a primal quality, a pain so profound it erupted from him, raw and unstoppable. It resonated in the ears of those around, a haunting reminder of their actions.A few soldiers began to whisper among themselves, their discomfort showing in their restless movements. "Someone shut that kid up," one grumbled, masking his unease with irritation. Another scoffed, spitting on the ground. "Wha

Ezra blinked. A twisted, bitter smile formed on his lips, lacking any real humor. He felt mad, completely losing his grip on reality. It almost felt like a relief to slip into a false dream rather than face the harshness of the real world. With fingers he didn’t want to move—but did—he mentally clicked "YES."The screen flickered, and suddenly, streams of light filled the space around him. Ezra recoiled, instincts warning him of danger, but this light felt safe. It enveloped him, warm and gentle, like a cocoon. Strange symbols danced before his eyes, transforming into grim options."Choose your path: Warrior. Berserker. Liberator. Mage."Ezra gazed at the options, each glowing with its own allure. Warrior seemed straightforward, a choice his father might have made. Berserker, with its fiery glow, promised raw power and destruction, a way to unleash the anger he felt. Mage appeared distant and intellectual, requiring calm and thoughtfulness—traits he no longer possessed. Then, he heard

Cold and dark, the dungeon dug at Ezra's sanity like an oppressive weight. Days melted into weeks, and with it came a subtle shift within him. Whether it was due to this anomaly of a system appearing in his mind or his realization that his body no longer wracked in constant pain, Ezra knew he could no longer afford to ignore the unseen force that was now acting within him.And every time he had thought of it, the system sprang into being as some kind of ghostly vision, flickering blue before him and glowing faintly in the void. First, it had seemed madness: a trick of his mind as it began to unravel under the strain of captivity. But the more he thought about it, the more it felt like a lifeline—something to cling to in this abyss. He felt inclined to know more about it.This system didn't need words or gestures to operate. It only needed thoughts, and with a little concentration towards the interface, a bluish, translucent screen flickered alive in front of him, showing a complex ser

Ezra hunched low, his fingers quaking while he scrubbed up and down against the cool marble floor of the chamber inside the palace. Above and around him came jeering tones. The young men of lower rank in the disciples sat in the lounge chairs in the room, as were other attendants of the palace. They threw bits of food and garbage on the floor, laughing as he scurried to pick it up. A stale bread crust fell to the ground, and instinctively Ezra reached for it."Look at him," one of the boys sneered. "The great son of the Echelon Sect, reduced to this."Another chimed in, his voice thick with sarcasm. "I bet his daddy would cry if he saw him now. Oh wait—he doesn't have a head to cry with!"The room exploded in a cacophony of laughter, the sound deeper than any blade. Ezra shoved the crust into his mouth, chewing mechanically, staring at the ground. The taste of ash and filth filled his mouth, but he swallowed without demur."You see how he eats? " Like a rat," the other said, kicking o

Then it halted at zero and, suddenly, onscreen pulsed:Mission Updated: Liberation Begins.Inside, the small quarters welcomed him with their usual emptiness: the thin mat in the corner, the cracked wooden floor, and the silence he had grown so used to over the years. Ezra woke up early in the morning and sat on his bed. He looked at Mira who was still sleeping soundly on her bed, her eyes tightly closed. Her expression was very peaceful as if she was having a very nice dream. This made him smile subconsciously as he stared at her for some moments.I still can't believe that someone like Mira actually fell in love with me, Ezra thought within himself as he took a deep breath. I mean, I didn't always see her as someone to be loved due to me being hellbent on revenge. I never even knew that she loved me for a long period of time and even after knowing that I didn't love her as well, she didn't give up. She kept on loving me, hoping that one day I'd return the feeling...Ezra closed his eyes before clenching his fists, and taking a very long breath. He then opened his eyes and stared at Mira again. She was still sleeping, unaware that Ezra was staring at him."I must say last night was the most pleasurable day of my life," Ezra said to himself. "I'm a

When Mira heard Ezra's confession to her, she was very much shocked. This was because she had not expected him to confess to her during this moment. In fact, she hadn't even imagined him confessing to her. After all, he was her teacher and didn't owe her any obligation of falling in love with her.For some moments she became quiet, not knowing how to respond to Ezra's confession. She opened her mouth several times to speak but no word came out and in the end, she couldn't help but close her mouth."I know this can be very shocking for you but all I've said is the truth, Mira," Ezra said, not backing down despite seeing Mira's reaction. Although this was his first time confessing his feelings to a woman he couldn't allow himself to be disappointed because of the response of the woman he was confessing to."I love you, Mira," Ezra said as he brought his face close to Mira's. "I love you and I love you very much."And with those words, Ezra leaned his face closer and closer till he could

The only thing left now to do was to just lie down and sleep because to be honest, there was nothing left for them to do anymore.Through the window, Ezra could see that the sun was now setting, a pale redness dying the entire surrounding. Birds were now chirping as they returned to their nests and wolves could be heard howling in the nearby forests. He let out a deep sigh as he turned to look at Mira who was still eating a piece of pork, her eyes filled with greed. She was like a little girl who had not eaten for a long period of time."I can see you enjoyed the meal greatly," Ezra said with a smile. "You can't stop licking your lips even after eating.""Like I said I haven't eaten something like this in my entire life," Mira said with a smile as she finished eating the piece of pork she had been holding. "I can't help it but eat this way. I hope I'm not embarr

  • Chapter 36: Leaving

Even though part of the village had been destroyed in the battle between Ezra, Mira, and the Boss, the villagers didn't blame them at all. Instead, they were grateful to them for killing the tyrant who had been causing everyone to live in fear for a very long period of time now. They even came to give Ezra and Mira money and food to sustain them during their stay. Even the innkeeper let them stay in his inn without paying a dime.In one of the rooms in the inn, Ezra and Mira sat down cross-legged eating chicken stew and rice. There was a bottle of expensive wine beside them and chunks of fried pork which were lying in a very large bowl. Silently they enjoyed themselves, drowning in the meal before them as if they were going to die any moment from now. It was rare for them to eat meals such as this so they had to cherish this moment because it might never come again."In all my life I've never been treated like this," Mira said with a smile as she popped a fried pork into her mouth lik

  • Chapter 35: The Reward

After the Boss's corpse disintegrated into several specks of white light, the Echelon system's notification came on.[CONGRATULATIONS ON COMPLETING YOUR MISSION][SIDE MISSION HAS BEEN COMPLETED! YOU HAVE SUCCESSFULLY HUNTED A CULTIVATOR IN YOUR WORLD...]I didn't hunt any Cultivator here...Ezra thought within himself but of course, he didn't say it out loud so that Mira wouldn't hear what he was actually saying.[MISSION REWARD: YOU HAVE GAINED THE TITLE, 'HUNTER'!]Huh? Ezra raised his eyebrows. This is the first time I'm hearing of titles. What does the Hunter title do? How does it help me exactly? Is it as good as the Sword of Nirvana ability which helped me greatly against the Boss?More thoughts invaded Ezra's mind as he kept on reading the notification in front of him over and over again. And in the end, he couldn't help but frown as he clenched his fists, wondering why the Echelon system was becoming more and more unscrupulous.I mean it could have given me a better reward for

  • Chapter 34: The Boss's Story

As the sword sliced through his chest, the Boss's eyes widened in disbelief. He couldn't believe that two players whom he had looked down on actually had what it took to defeat him. He had underestimated the both of them, thinking that there was no way they were going to defeat him. And it was at this moment he realized that he had made a foolish decision not to kill them immediately when he battled with them.I kept on toiling with them, not knowing that they had an insane ability I've never heard of, the Boss thought within himself as he clutched his chest which had so much blood seeping out of it. If I had known I would have used all my abilities from the start. I shouldn't have wasted time messing with them..."I remember you saying that you were going to kill us," Ezra said as he drew out his katana from the man's chest, causing blood to spurt out immediately. "And I remember telling you how I was going to defeat you with all my abilities.""Yes..." the Boss chuckled painfully as

Ezra was very surprised after seeing that Mira was the one that actually saved him. He had used the Resonant Bond on Mira so that she would be able to share his strength and abilities so that she would recover fast. And that was why he had been using the qi breathing technique to recover quickly so that the same would be applicable to Mira. Who would have thought that she would heal very fast and even get to reach his tier in a short amount of time?"Standing there and staring at me wouldn't help things," Mira said as she pointed her sword at the Boss. "We need to take down this freak before things get out of hand."Seeing this the Boss couldn't help but chuckle, "That's a nice speech but one thing's for sure...there's no way you're beating me. Not even the two of you are enough to take me down.""You think?" Ezra raised his eyebrows as he took a deep breath, using the qi breathing technique to heal from the injuries the Boss had inflicted on him. But no matter how he tried he couldn'

  • Chapter 32: Two Against One

When Ezra heard that the Boss was a Cultivator just like him, one with a system, he experienced several emotions all at once. He was confused, shocked, and terrified because the information he got about Cultivators from Pharez turned out to be very different from what he was seeing right now. There was supposed to be one Cultivator in an entire realm and not two. Cultivators were not even supposed to meet except of course they were high-tier ones who could travel between realms. The only time Cultivators get to meet is when their systems give them missions in the Realm of Nirvana. So Ezra was very confused about the whole thing."I can see confusion written all over your face," the Boss said with a smile. "I was also as confused as you when I came to this realm.""Wait..." Ezra soon came to the realization. "You're not from this realm?""This is not my realm," the Boss said as he stretched his right hand towards his broadsword that was lying on the ground some meters away from him. "A
