“What do you mean? Do you want to be annoyed by those police officers?”
Rachel raised her eyebrows, but did not answer him. Instead, she pulled out an envelope from her pocket and passed it to Konnor. He took the envelope cautiously, as if it were a bomb that can explode any moment.
“What’s this?”
Rachel nudged him. “Open it.”
Gently, Konnor opened the envelope. Due to it being in Rachel’s pocket for a long time, there were a lot of creases on the envelope. As soon as he opens it, he spots a pale pink card, with the words, ‘You’re Invited!’
“A birthday party? Really, Rachel?”
“What the- Read the card’s content first, dumbass.”
Konnor gave her the stink eye and simultaneously, flipped the card open.
We’re Getting Engaged! Please join us to celebrate our engagement. Details of the engagement party have been listed behind this card. Remember to confirm your attendance with us beforehand!
Love,
Adelric Sander & Rachel Marita
Konnor stared at the card without blinking. Slowly, he placed his hand over his wide-opened mouth and froze. What in the world-
“Rachel, you’re getting engaged? Or are my eyes playing tricks on me?” Konnor asks as he rubs his eyes continuously.
“No, Konnor. My doppelganger is.”
Konnor stares at Rachel. “Holy guacamole, my sister is getting engaged!?”
“Why is that so difficult for you to comprehend?” Rachel scoffs.
“Since when did you get yourself a boyfriend? And from this bastard’s name, I can tell he’s not a local.”
“Hey! Don’t call him a bastard. If anyone’s a bastard, you are! Don’t think I forgive you for abandoning me to fend for myself.”
“Not the point, Rachel.”
Rachel groans. “Why does it matter when I got myself a boyfriend? I’m getting engaged anyways.”
“It matters because I need to make sure you weren’t forced into this!”
“Stop trying to be the better person here.”
“Well, if you’re here to give me this, then I believe I have all the rights to know. Most importantly, I am your family.”
Rachel bit her inner cheeks. She is feeling a tad bit of frustration with her brother’s behaviour. Not to mention, the surrounding heat is causing her to melt. A typical summer day here shouldn’t be this hot, but it seems like the Gods are making it hard for her to have a simple conversation with her brother. However, she didn’t want to argue with her brother. So, she took a few deep breaths until her anger dissipated a bit.
“I met him even before that incident happened.”
“Now that’s great. Drop more bombs. What’s next? You’ve met aliens? Made a secret handshake with them? Learn all the secrets of the universe?”
“Konnor, I’m being serious.”
“I am too. How dare you not introduce him to me 2 years ago! We are twins, Rachel. We’re supposed to be inseparable. I told you everything happening in my life, and you just kept such a big event from me?”
“I wanted to tell you okay! I really did! I had everything planned out, the dinner, the official meeting, but that happened. And after the incident, you disappeared without a trace,” Rachel huffed.
Konnor’s eyes narrowed. Oh, so now it’s my fault-
Then, it dawned upon him. He recalls his mother telling him about the dinner and how important it is. His father also mentioned something about a surprise, but at that time, Konnor was too busy with his responsibilities as a corporate worker. He merely agreed to his parents to be there, but wasn’t planning to show up. After all, he was new to the working environment and should be working three times harder than everyone else if he wanted to succeed. His luck is incredibly great, but his father always told him that hard work is most of life. The harder he works, the better the outcome.
At least in the past.
“I- I’m so sorry, Rachel. I-”
“Save it, Konnor. Your sorry will not turn back time. Our relationship is no longer like last time, but I really wish you can be there with me during my special day.”
Konnor felt a pang in his chest. He made his sister mad.
“Will you at least tell me, where and how did you meet him? It's not too much of a problem to understand your dating history, right?”
“Remember I was working part time in an art studio? He is the owner’s son. Spilled paint on him on my first day, and that memory has been stuck with me ever since. Not going to lie, he was pretty furious. But he fell for me. Hard. ”
Konnor laughs. “Typical you. Clumsy as always.”
“You do realise you and I share the same genes, right? Calling me a klutz is equivalent to calling you one.”
Konnor flipped her off. “Shut up, Rachel.”
“No.”
Rachel grins. She glanced at her teal watch. Although it seemed a bit old and definitely does not belong to the current trend, it was one of her father’s treasured watches. So, she treasures it like her own child.
Perhaps, this watch is the only thing that keeps her memory of her father alive.
“I need to go. Alderic and I have to make final arrangements for the party in two days. I really hope it will be perfect.” Rachel stands up and dusts herself.
Konnor smoothens the creases on the envelope gently using his thumb. His eyebrows furrowed, seemingly thinking hard. He wasn’t sure whether or not he should attend the party. He is being chased more frequently nowadays, will attending the party jeopardise his sister’s life in the future? But Rachel made it clear that she wanted him to be there.
“I’ll try my best to be there, Rachel.”
Rachel snorts. “Try your best? It’s compulsory! I already told Alderic that you’ll be attending, so if you bail on me, I will kill you for real.”
Rachel snorts. “Try your best? It’s compulsory! I already told Alderic that you’ll be attending, so if you bail on me, I will kill you for real.” ~ ‘Should I, should I not?’ Konnor fiddles with his thumbs. Tomorrow will be Rachel’s engagement party and he still doesn’t know whether or not to attend it. He is a very indecisive person, at least that’s what his parents always tell him. When he was younger, his parents used to take him and Rachel out for ice cream once every month. Rachel would easily pick out her favourite ice cream flavour and a few toppings. On the other hand, he would be stuck choosing the flavour he wanted that day. Most of the time, his indecisiveness would cause the line to be held up. Konnor sighs. ‘Why is it so difficult to make a de
Konnor just walked into the first aisle and pretended to be a patron in the store. He picked up a blue box and opened it. It was an empty box. ‘What a nice empty box.’ Konnor placed the box back to its original position. He continued walking down the aisle with his hands in his pocket. He casually strolls around the store until his eye catches an interesting thing. A Pokémon card. An ultra-rare Pikachu Illustrator card. Konnor immediately took it. ‘Oh my god, no way!’ Konnor contemplated whether or not to put it in his pocket and just exit the store. After all, he’s been wanting to complete his collection in a very long time.
“My father thinks I am a spoiled brat, for your information. Even if you don’t believe me, it doesn’t change the fact that his annoying face is clouding your perceptions about good and evil.” Konnor pats her head. “I see what the problem is. Your father accidentally lashed out on you one time and said horrible words. Then. you took it to heart and decided to leave your family.” “No! I am not a sensitive person like what you said-” “Listen to me, Isabella. A lot of people yearn to have parents who care for them. You, on the other hand, are lucky to have parents who are still here to pour their unconditional love. Sure, they might have said a thing or two that makes you feel betrayed. But we are humans, and humans make lots of mistakes. That’s how we progress in life. The bigger the mistake or failure we make, the
Louis believes he is a good police officer, a great one even. When he was still in the police academy, he always came out as the top student, whether it was in academics or physical fitness. He graduated as the valedictorian and didn’t need to pay his student loans. When he started working, he always did everything instructed by his superiors and never failed a single one yet. However, this time, it seems like he might lose his streak, and possibly his job. “More than 36 hours have passed, and none of you have any news yet?” The men in the room shuffled nervously. All of them looked like zombies with their prominent dark circles underneath their eyes. They barely have time to finish their daily tasks, how could they think of sleeping? “No, sir,” one of them spoke. Lo
“My boss, a friendly acquaintance of yours I believe, told me to recite these exact words. Time is running out, Louis-bug! If you want your prize, speed up, will you?” The unknown man cackles as he holds his stomach. “Also, the boss said he would like to meet you.” Louis nods, hiding a slight chill after witnessing the unknown man laughing. Honestly speaking, he should have expected this to happen. The unknown man’s superior is frightening to say the least, and his employees should be somewhat similar to him. The unknown man struts towards Louis and whispers into Louis’s right ear. “We’ll be waiting, Louis. Expect a text message from us.” Louis gulps as the unknown man winks at him before heading out of the office. Louis lets out a sigh. “Sir, who was that?” Daniel a
“I still have nothing to wear!” Konnor says in realisation. He is currently having his dinner in a convenience store. No, he did not steal anything. He found a $10 dollar bill lying in the thrift store from earlier, so he conveniently slipped it into his pocket. What? That’s literally his occupation. With that $10 dollar bill, he got himself some instant noodles and a bottle of water, leaving him $5 more for tomorrow’s breakfast. While enjoying his dinner, he realises that he has nothing to wear for tomorrow’s event. Konnor checks for the time using his wristband. “It’s 8 now. I still have 2 hours left before the mall closes.” Konnor slurped his noodles hurriedly, gulped his water and rushed out of the store. He runs to the nearest shopping mall and unfortunately, it
“Here, I have one. My sister told me she designed this suit under the theme Dusky Retro, something she would like to see men wear if she was born a millennium ago.” Zheng Yang removes the suit from the cloth bag and reveals a grey suit. “What colour is this?” “Uh, hold on. It should say here in the tag- Charcoal grey,” Zheng Yang replies as he checks the tag attached to the suit. Konnor smiles giddily. He couldn’t believe his luck! This was the exact same colour he was looking for. “Do you mind if I have a look?” Konnor asks politely. “Sure, go ahead.” Zheng Yang places the suit in Konnor’s hands. The suit is by far the most mes
When Konnor was younger, he always thought he would be the first to settle down with a family. He always had a dream to do so, unlike Rachel. She would always be disgusted when Konnor starts talking about marriage when they were in their teenage years. Rachel never believed in love and matrimony. She thinks they are pure obstacles to achieve her dream. Now who would have expected her to tie a knot before Konnor? Konnor sighs as he gently swirls the wine in his glass. He arrived at Rachel’s engagement party 30 minutes ago but he has yet to see Rachel and her fiance. “Hey, Konnor!” Konnor turns around to see his twin standing in front of him. Konnor gasps in amazement. Rachel looks like a living fairy, with her beautiful air force blue dress. It is a flowy
