*Rumble
I rolled on the ground, but without hurting myself, the clothes the old woman had given me had cushioned the shocks.
'And now…' I stood looking at nothing, thinking about what to do. It was difficult to realize what had happened. My heartbeat quickened and my breath became heavy.
I instinctively touched the hilt of my sword and the feeling of discomfort I was experiencing subsided.
I got up from the ground, looked around, and noticed that the door to the witch's shop had disappeared.
I pulled out the magic compass.
'It seems that the compass still points to the inn closest to me ... maybe I could go there ...'
I tried to think of better alternatives, but nothing came to mind, so I walked towards the inn.
I walked through that grayish and dying forest, sometimes I looked up, the sky above me was always covered with clouds.
'Who knows what time it is in this world ... I hope to get to the inn before evening ...' Although due to the darkened sky of the clouds it already seemed almost evening.
Even though the forest seemed not to be teeming with monsters, I always kept my guard up, ready to draw my sword at the first noise. Well, not that I knew how to use the sword, though, it was still better than fighting monsters with your bare hands, right?
I noted with regret that there were not even animals in that forest.
As I walked I thought of a name to give to my new partner (the black-bladed sword), quite trivial names came to my mind that definitely didn't give it too much justice, all names that concerned its being black and powerful.
I then remembered how, during the explanation concerning the first catastrophe, the old witch, while speaking of the black dragon "Chaos", had looked at my sword for a moment.
'Mmh ... maybe this blade was made with the scales of that dragon ... after all, it's black just like that dragon ...' In my head, that theory didn't seem to sound bad, 'Mmh ... what if I just call it "Blade of Chaos "?' I asked myself, I didn't mind the name at all, so for now I decided to call it that. Sure, it wasn't anything too original, but it had a meaning behind it.
'Come to think of it… that old witch didn't even tell me her name-'
*AAAAAHHH !!!
While I was still absorbed in my thoughts perhaps trying to escape from the reality I was experiencing, a female scream of terror came from my right.
For a while, I was frozen in fear.
Another scream broke again the silence of the forest where I was, now the voice seemed to ask for help.
I touched the pommel of my sword, and as before, I calmed down.
'D-do I have to go ?!' I was still undecided on what to do, but the side of me that wanted to see what was happening won.
I ran through the sparse undergrowth, trying to make as little noise as possible. I noticed that the closer I got to the voice, and the more the forest seemed to develop less in height but denser, the pines became lower, and I began to see more bushes and wild grasses. Although the flora changed, the environment retained that dying and gloomy air.
I finally arrived a few meters from the source of the noise. Now the woman's screams were attenuated by her crying, I hid behind a bush near the scene and scrutinized what was happening. I was in a slightly raised position with respect to the scene. The whole scene seemed to take place on a dirt and gravel road left enough to its fate.
I saw to the right a wooden cart with a cloth that covered what appeared to be food, in front of the cart there was a dying donkey, hit in the neck by something sharp. There was a man lying on the ground, smeared with blood, with a rusty sword next to him. I also saw the woman responsible for the screams, she was on the ground with her left calf bleeding, on the ground crawling towards the wooden cart.
The woman was looking at the person responsible for this repulsive sight, it was a small bear, probably still young, or rather, that died young. I noticed, in fact, that this beast had at times moldy and decaying skin, with open wounds that never healed and that did not pour even a single drop of blood. It had grayish-brown fur, which turned reddish, almost purple, towards its head.
It had very sharp claws, sharper than a normal bear, yellow, at times black due to dry blood, and red due to the blood of his most recent victims. I noticed how the bear had completely white eyes with no iris or pupil. Finally, white mushrooms with bright purple dots grew over his head.
I remembered the old witch's words, what I was looking at was an undead errant.
What would you do in a situation like this?
I was in the presence of the scariest scene of my life, a monster was about to kill a defenseless and wounded woman.
I was there, watching, with my hands shaking with fear.
'What I do?' 'Even if I try to save her, I will still die ...' 'I can't do it ...but…' These thoughts flooded my mind.
And to think that when I read books and watched TV series I often said "if I had been in his place ..." or even "if I had been in his place I would have done this and that ...", now instead, I was terrified, in front of a scene like those in those books, now in first person, without the strength to do anything.
The bear came closer and closer to its prey, the woman had a terrified face, she looked in the direction of the cart, somehow it gave her strength, she got up albeit her injured leg, took a branch from the ground and handed it between her and the bear.
The beast in front of her launched itself towards her and with one paw threw her towards a tree to its left. The woman lost consciousness on impact, perhaps she was already dead.
The errant, now on two legs, slowly advanced towards the woman's body.
'No…' I understood it wanted to give her the fatal blow.
Even then, I stayed behind the bush as I was hiding in fear. In that moment I felt a mix of emotions: fear, disillusionment, sadness, and even guilt.
I felt responsible for that.
'I a hero ?! I don't even have the courage to call the monster's attention, not even the courage to move! I AM NOT A HERO, I AM AND WILL ALWAYS BE- '
* Waah waaah!
A cry caught my attention, and my self-destructive thought stopped.
"A child ..." A baby's cry spread through the forest, coming from the wooden cart. I finally understood what strengthened that woman.
That heartbreaking cry also caught the errant's attention, who changed its target.
At that moment, even a coward and a weakling like me, could not remain indifferent.
A thread of courage gave me the strength to grasp the hilt of my sword with my right hand, which gave me even more courage.
I took deep breaths and moved out of my hiding place.
I advanced towards the beast, taking short steps and trying to make as little noise as possible, while the constant crying of the child covered me. I drew my sword and thought about the old woman's advice.
'The best way to defeat such an undead errant is to cut off its head or take the mushrooms off its head ...'
I sneaked up to the monster as it crawled slowly on all fours to the wooden cart.
The bear, now that it was on all fours, was even shorter than me. A crazy idea came to mind.
I grabbed my sword with both hands and rushed at full speed to the bear, then jumped. The wanderer noticed me too late, in fact, while I was "flying" above it, with a blow I cut the neck of the beast.
Finally, I fell in a disorganized manner to the ground, next to the cart.
{TO BE CONTINUED ...}
'D-did I do it ?!' The sharpness of the sword shocked me.I turned towards the errant and saw a repulsive scene. I had indeed cut off the bear's head, however, not entirely, in fact, it was still attached to its body, but only for a small break of skin. The bear stood up on two legs, its head swayed during the movement until it stopped leaning against its chest. From the bear's head, precisely from the cut I had created, now came white threads that looked like alien worms. They seemed to be moving on their own. These stretched out until they reached the other part of the beast's body, lifting it slowly.I realized the wanderer was trying to reattach his head, so I sprinted at him."Oh, no!".I braced myself to hit it again with a side swipe to the neck, but the beast managed to keep me at a distance with a paw swipe to my right side.'Can you close a wound like that ?!'I had to kill it before its head was completely reattached, I knew that if the errant was back up and running at 100
She greeted me with a fake smile asking me if I was hungry or thirsty, I shook my head.*gulp'I can still feel the looks of the others in here …'"Um ... I need help... out here is a wounded woman who needs treatment as soon as possible ..." even though it was urgent, I said it in a low voice. She opened her eyes wide and put her hand on her chin with a thoughtful face."B-by chance ... is she short, blonde, and ... light eyes ?!" She said with a worried voice. Her accurate description made me realize that she knew her and that she was probably waiting for her."Yes-"She instantly leaped over the counter with an athletic gesture and ran towards the club's exit."TOM! Take care of the counter! ""EH ?!" A man replied. I did not understand from where, perhaps from the kitchen."It's urgent!" She screamed in a trembling voice. The man walked out through a door behind the counter. She looked at him "Marie!" She screamed at him, her face worried. He nodded.…Have you ever felt completel
He removed all of Marie's robes, even the cloth around the wound in her leg that I had put on, which made me look away from embarrassment. Then, the old man raised his walking stick and brought the metal knob towards the woman's body. Then he muttered something and the woman's body, previously dirty with mud, dust, and blood, was thoroughly cleansed. 'MAGIC!?' He too, like the old woman who had welcomed me into this world, was a magician. Well, maybe I shouldn't have reacted so surprised, after all, just before, he had opened a door out of nowhere. 'I still can't get used to the idea that magic exists in this world ...' Now that the woman was completely clean, I noticed how beautiful she was. The old man took out of the ampoule some of the healing ointment he had created and spread it over all the wounds, abounding in that on the woman's leg. "Good!" The old man said, "Now we have to let her rest for at least one night..." "Will she be cured?!" Asked the agitated innkeeper. "E
The room, in addition to the bed with clean beige sheets and a blanket made from bear fur, had a dark wood nightstand next to the bed, a small empty two-door wardrobe of dark and shiny wood to my left, and a candlestick which descended from the ceiling with five arms and lighted candles. These candles illuminated the whole room with soft light. I noticed that the candles did not have wax collectors under them, however, looking more closely, I saw that such candles did not wear out and the wax did not melt at all.The floor of the room was in light parquet while the walls were white, although the candlelight yellowed them a little. The only negative point of that room was certainly the lack of windows, which gave me a thread of claustrophobia.'Now that I think about it ... not even the living room where I was before had windows...'I took off the shoes, the fur coat and put the sword by the side of the bed, and lay down in bed. I was tired but, even if now I was alone, I still could n
I followed Rivorio into another room in the house, small and gloomy. There was only a source of light that came from the ceiling through a circular oculus. This illuminated above all an open gilded casket, placed above a low column of white marble in the Corinthian style. "W-what is it?" I asked. The casket was not very large. This featured, on the front face, a bas-relief depicting a man plucking a heart-shaped fruit from an apple tree. "HEHe" He laughed smugly, "This is my greatest invention!" He said fiercely, "It's a magical crafting box, specializing in healing and buff potions ..." he smiled at me. Seeing me not entirely enthusiastic, he made a face and spoke again, "Tsk ... look ...". The old man turned to a shelf on his left. He picked up a glass bottle, a twig of something, and a blue leaf, and placed them inside the casket, closing it later. I watched the process and was confused by it. After all, when he told me we were going to make a potion, I imagined she was usin
'I have to take courage ... either I cross this bridge or I will have to swim it ...' the idea of swimming in the icy waters of that lake did not invite me at all.I decided to untie the sword belt from my waist and place it on the ground, this in order to have as little weight as possible with me during my reckless walk on that bridge.I took the first step, another creak, second step, and history repeated itself. I kept walking, trying to be careful not to put my feet in the parts where the wooden boards were moldy.*Crrrk!I was now halfway across the bridge when, placing my right foot on a plank of the bridge, it yielded in the center, almost knocking me forward. At that moment, instinctively, I tried not to fall by holding up with the parapet to my right, this at first held my weight, however, in the end, it too gave up.Now, instead of falling forward, I was about to fall into the void to my right left by the parapet. This would have been even worse as I would have fallen into
The chimera continued to advance until only five meters remained between it and me. After that, the beast also stopped and began to scrutinize me. The air around me became colder than it was already, then, I began to perceive something strange, it was a new emotion, I realized that what I was feeling was the killing instinct of the beast in front of me. Its violent "aura" made me shiver.I realized I had to put myself back together as soon as possible, and then study my opponent. Its eyes were not completely white, nor could I see mushrooms attached to it, so I found that I was not dealing with an Errant.'If it is not an errant ... what is it?!'I stood still, but on guard, waiting for my opponent's move. Its tail began to wrap, while the end of it soared upward, curving forward at the height of its external ax-shaped skeleton. The way the beast moved its tail vaguely reminded me of a cobra.'That tail of its seems the most dangerous thing'The beast began to take a few steps toward
At the moment of my awakening, I found myself in a rather familiar room, it was the bedroom where I had my first sleep in that world. I was therefore in the residence of Rivorio. 'How did I end up here ...' I noticed that I did not feel pain along my body, it surprised me not a little, so I tried to sit up, however, as soon as I tried to lift my torso, an excruciating pain ran all over my back. "AHHKh!" As absurd as it may sound, the back pain I felt at the time was even worse than what I felt during the fight with the chimera. I remembered, then, that it was the same in football, and similarly in all sports, when you recive a foul, the real pain comes at the end of the day when your body has cooled down and the adrenaline in your body is reduced. Because of that pain, I could not help but lie down again. *Gurgle My belly began to grumble, I was incredibly hungry. Unable to move, I realized that my only chance to get Rivorio to notice me was to scream, although I didn't like the
