Night Striker

Draven ran into the woods, the sound of his heartbeat louder than his own breathing. He vaguely wondered if she would run after him, if she could track him. The whole night had ended too fast, too dramatic. The effect of her fake night was beginning to wear off. It was difficult to hide in the daylight, but easier at night. If she raised the effect, it would still be dark, but not as pitch black and starless as it was.

Draven touched trees as he slowly made his way around and continued to run in slow patches. Damn that girl. She had killed Leo, and it could have been him. It could have been him. He stopped for a moment and bent over, his hands on his knees as he tried to catch his breathing.

“The bag,” he whispered to himself. “The map.”

He had nothing. All he knew was that Leo had disappeared into thin air and he had quickly fled the scene. Elena had stared too long at the damage, at the air where he disappeared. She had brushed it aside as a mistake, and was ready to focus on Draven until she realized that he was gone.

“Fuck,” he muttered to himself. “I’m in deep shit. You really can’t trust anyone here.”

At that statement, he heard footsteps. Draven straightened and pressed himself against a tree. Was she chasing after him? He wouldn’t be surprised if she was, but still. He backed up against another tree, and then another, before staying silent and straining his ears to hear properly.

There was running, and then harsh breaths. Now it was obvious that someone was after him. Was she the one? Could Elena see in the dark?

That’s absurd, he thought, but then again so many things with her were different. She was the one who had practically started this journey in order to get the other half of the map, and then tried to kill them to suit her taste. Did she knowingly lure them out of the place they were so she could carry out her vile mission? Was there even another part of the map? Was there even a friend somewhere who could have helped them get to the other half?

“You can’t fucking trust anyone here,” he muttered. “Shit!”

The growling of the thing chasing him increased. Draven knew then that it was a monster. She had probably loosened something on him, and now it was chasing him.

“Shit!” he began to run.

It was the only sensible thing to do, running in the pitch black forest. The thing chasing him seemed to smell the very air that he breathed, and chased after him. Draven slipped over a tree and rolled down the forest, hitting his head hard against the thump of a tree. He groaned, pressing himself against the bark of that tree. It was a pretty good hit, and he was tired of running.

Thump. Thump.

The sound of the monster approaching was loud and filled his ears. Draven felt for his weapons, the one he’d picked from the building before. He drew out a short dagger from his boot, and then the long sword that looked blunt. He hadn’t even had the time to sharpen it. He wondered if this would be the end of him, being killed inside a video game.

“GAARRRRR!”

Draven screamed and jumped back, even though there was nothing to jump to. The thing chasing him had finally materialised before him. Before he could even begin to wonder what it was, the system hologram appeared beside the beast.

[Threat Level: Average]

Draven stared at the beast, grateful that it wasn’t that much strong. However, the beast had begun to growl, which means it was very much upset and ready to kill him. He looked down on his weapons; maybe, just maybe, he could strike it once and hit its mark. Since the beast was a night striker that kills silently, Draven made sure to just escape from its grasp. He had a spontaneous plan and he hoped it would hit its mark.

The beast made one step towards him, growling. Draven threw the dagger at him and it swiped just out of the air, out of reach. He gripped his sword with both hands as the beast approached him menacingly.

“Why don’t you just go straight to the point, huh?!” he yelled.

The beast growled and went just out of sight. Draven stayed in the middle, like a prey waiting for its predator. He hated the feeling and waited for the monster to come out of hiding. It was dark, and the system had pretty much given him every information he needed to know that despite the fact this animal had low speed and average threat level, he could as well kill him.

“Where are you?!” Draven snapped at the air. “Come out!”

There was no sound. He expected the beast to be more agitated at his noise, but Draven suspected that the night stalker was most likely amused and ready to emit its blow. Just as Draven turned, he saw the beast emit silently out of the darkness, like it was materializing out of thin air. He saw his sharp claw, his sharp tiny teeth. He saw the killing blow and he acted fast before it landed on him.

Draven raised his sword and swiped off the head of the beast.

He looked down at the still beats before him.
