Chapter 25

“Yes, ma’am,” I replied, holding back the sobs. I then handed her the schedule, which I barely managed to hold onto when I was hit. She took it from me and looked it over for a while.

“Why are you listed as self-study,” she asked.

“I believe it was because of my assessment scores, ma’am,” I replied, hoping I addressed her right and struggling to keep my voice steady. I didn’t want them to hear me cry. I could already hear the teasing, how I was a crybaby.

She didn’t hit me this time, so either I got it right, or she decided to be merciful. Since I didn’t see any hint of mercy in her, I must’ve gotten it right.

“I will speak to the administration and discover what the plan is for you. Until I tell you otherwise, you will participate with the rest of the class,” she informed me.

“Yes, ma’am,” I replied.

“You may return to your seat,” she said, turning around and walking away.

“Thank you, ma’am,” I replied to her back, as I sat down.
