Morning came and brought a reminder of the hell he had experienced the day before. Daniel had stayed up awake the whole night while his roommates slept, he lay awake, wallowing in his misery silently, and only dozing off near dawn.
Craig and Max had tried to cheer him up, and Max even sang happy birthday to him, to try and cheer him up but he hid beneath his brackets in his thoughts. Craig, who had a deeper understanding, decided to give him space and dragged Max out with him for pizza. When they returned, they found him still under his bracket and decided to leave him alone,
The bracket had been his shield during the night, but with the sound of birds, he couldn’t hide forever.
He had more important things in mind to worry about, his aunt’s health problem, money, and so on.
Besides, he didn't want to hear Craig and Matt’s sympathy or words of encouragement, at least, not right now. Such never yielded or amounted to anything, especially when his life was wrapped around poverty
Maybe they could help him out since they were born with silver spoons in their mouths. But that was not the solution he was seeking.
To Daniel’s surprise, when he quietly raised his head, he found that Max and Craig’s beds were already empty. They have already gone to class, which was unusually early for them.
We left you some pizza. Eat, man!
- Craig
No worries. We’ll take notes for you.
- Max
Daniel smiled for the first time since last night at the script his friends left on the desk. True friends they are. Good! No worry about being embarrassed now.
Daniel quickly washed his face and walked out of the room. He didn't feel like going to class and didn't care at the moment. Not after his scholarship was revoked in what appeared to be a case of corruption.
He first went straight to renew his aunt's insulin card. He should have done so yesterday but had forgotten because of the presentation.
With that done, he got on the bus and headed straight to the family home to visit his aunt. He needed a break from everything that was going on around him and his aunt was always able to make him smile.
He did not plan on telling her about the scholarship just yet. It was a huge blow that he knew would break her. And for the job, it was easy to make an excuse for it. He was sure he could find a new one soon. After all, he had always been one of the top students. As for Shelly, she was never her favorite, so she rarely asked about her and that would save him a lot of effort.
When he arrived home, he found his aunt Carol making sandwiches. She was a short woman with curly black hair and gray eyes. He was a male version of her. She hugged him the second he walked in.
"How come you didn't tell me you were coming in the morning?"
"Someone required insulin," he replied, a big smile spread across his face. The sight of his lovely aunt really cheered him up a bit.
She paused for a second, staring at him, "But what about school? Are you skipping classes?"
"Class can wait; the errand came first."
He approached the table and took a seat. He didn't hold eye contact with Carlo for long as her staring would blow his cover and reveal the tears he was holding back.
She was always good at reading his mood. .d she was very much aware of him bottling his feelings inside instead of expressing them.
"Daniel, do you know how much I despise boys who miss school?"
"There is only one class, Aunt Carlo. In fact, we are already writing exams. Those are just revisions and catch-up classes from the slow lecturers. Anyway, Matt offered to help me take down notes. So don’t worry."
Daniel knew she had already made many sacrifices for him to be admitted to university which she believed was going to change the course of their lives. He didn’t want her to be burdened with his new problem on campus
Alright, if you say so. I hope you know what you’re doing, my boy." She sighed eventually and inquired instead if he had eaten.
If he said no, she was going to give him the entire sandwich while she starved and he was not going to allow that, not with her condition. He could tell the bread was whole grain, strictly for her condition, and the only cheap food she could find around so he had to pass even when he was hungry.
"I've already eaten, please ignore me," he lied without blinking an eye. And to calm your nerves, I will go and attend the afternoon classes," he added.
She smiled, her nephew's only way out of poverty was education. As for the dangers? She hoped they had faded over time.
"How is work? Ooh and I forgot, how was your presentation?"
Daniel scratched his brow. "The CEO did not show up, I guess they do not care much about intern ideas," he lied once more. He didn't like lying to her, but he didn't want to upset her either. He had already infuriated her by failing to attend class.
"Sure, he was just busy, you know these rich people. One day you will understand when you become filthy rich, just like your ..." she giggled but soon suppressed the smile as if recalling something not so merry.
Daniel chuckled, pretending to laugh happily along with the joke, and thus failed to take notice of Carol’s odd behavior. He knew she had big expectations for him, and he too was very excited about his future before yesterday.
After watching Carol finishing her breakfast, Daniel went to his bedroom, which he had converted into a small workshop. He always made time to stop by and work on his own inventions and sketches.
His grandfather, father, and uncle had all been professionals in this field. And he too had taken their path. He was still far from making it big, but he was sure he would one day restore his family name.
Most of his inventions were unique and high-quality, just like the 1300i Insulin Infuser that he had been working on recently for his aunt. He was inspired by one of his father’s notebooks not long ago.
Carol had no idea what he was into, nor did his friends. The portable device was going to be the first of its kind for diabetic patients, particularly type I diabetics who lack insulin needed to regulate sugar levels, if only he could work on some formulation that required a lot of funding.
The machine was his aunt's hope and also the main reason he was pursuing a career in Biomedical Engineering. But now that he was fired, he would need to seek another way out.
He originally expected to receive funding and support from BioPharm if his PB prototype had been approved, but the presentation turned out to be a nightmare. He had thought of looking for help from his friends’ family yesterday when he was lying in bed but dropped that idea within seconds. He knew Craig’s family sold jewelry as well as herbs, and Matt’s family focused on mines in the country. None of their family seemed to be specializing in Biomedical Engineering. So why would they fund him? Just as he was thinking hard, a knock at his door jolted him out of his reverie."Yes?""May I enter?" Carol asked merrily. He quickly packed the pieces as they were not ready for use. And, giving false hope to his aunt was the last thing on his agenda. He opened the door, and Carol walked in with a big smile on her face, hiding something behind her. "Here is my birthday boy?""My! Is that a gift for your dear nephew?" Daniel asked, sounding mischievous and excited. "Open it!" Carol beamed w
Irritated, George pushed on the trolley again, this time with great force, sending her tumbling to the ground. He was not going to put up with such arrogance from a nobody of low status.Carol landed hard, but she was not one to lie on the ground and be spat at. She attempted to stand, but the little strength she had betrayed her as her body slumped back to the ground. She coughed loudly and held her chest.George moved, not wanting her to cough on his expensive shoes. The woman was sick but defiant. She kept coughing, the push somehow triggered a cough which irritated George and made him feel uneasy, so he looked around to make sure no one was passing by. He took a piece of paper and threw it in her lap."Sell me the house, you need the money to pay for your nephew's tuition," he said.Carol coughed, her gaze fixed on the paper, then up at him."That paper contains the names of the students chosen for the scholarship for next semester," he explained. "And, if you look through it, Dan
Daniel thanked his neighbor and walked into the house, deep in thought, trying to control his rage. Only the photos were going to reveal who the man was.His main concern was finding the bank book, so he went straight to his aunt's bedroom. He stood at the doorway, with an idea of where to begin. Carol's room was well-kept, and there wasn't much to go through, so he started with her wardrobe, then her drawers on the dressing mirror, but he couldn't find anything. He quickly looked everywhere but the bank book was nowhere to be found. He paused, pondering his next step. He had practically turned the room upside down, but he couldn't find it. The only item left was the bed. Out of options, he flipped it, not wanting to leave any stones unturned but found nothing.Hope was eluding him, the bank book was his last hope. He walked out of the bedroom, tripping over the items he had thrown around, frustration evident on his face. He needed to find the book fast and get to the bank fast.He wa
It was from the hospital, pressing him for payment before time went out. Daniel had expected it, so he wasn’t very surprised. After hanging up the phone, he quickly picked it up again and called Craig. Had Craig said ‘no’, it would be two hundred percent harder for him to solve the problem.Just as Daniel was waiting for Craig, a thought suddenly struck him as he looked down at the relic and bank book he was holding. Although the family enemies had never recognized the family relic, he couldn’t leave the house just like that holding it in the open air, could he? And he definitely had to remove the button from the drawers. The gold in the hidden wooden box was safer there but it needed a portable switch. And for the relic, he went into his room and glued a football sticker on its surface before wearing it around his neck, making it appear as if it was a football team necklace. The family enemies were after the relic and in their perception,THAT THING was embedded in the house, so he
Daniel kept staring at the photo, trying to figure out who the man resembled, but the faces eluded him. He was certain the ugly face looked familiar. A knock on the door jolted him out of his reverie. It was the doctor; they exchanged pleasantries before getting right to business. Carol needed to be taken in for surgery. The longer they waited, the worse she would become."Doctor, I understand. I'll prepare the remaining funds," he assured."Please hurry, because if you do not make payments, we will be unable to continue treating her," the doctor explained."I understand, just give me an hour."The doctor nodded as Daniel bolted from the room, carrying the house contract with him. He had thought about the cards in his hands the entire night. So far, the enemies believed they were the ones pulling the strings. He planned to change that, and it was time for the Lanes to start playing their cards. He was going to sell the house to the enemies, and use the money to pay for his aunt's surg
Not wanting to get his friend involved or put him in danger, he smiled and thanked him for the second time. What was important was that he now had the faces and names of his enemies. But the last name he expected on the list was the man that stole his scholarship and his girlfriend. He went back to his new apartment, pissed but more determined than ever. The anger he was feeling gave him a new lease to deal with the Meyers. He was going to leave them rotting on the streets just like they had his aunt.He looked at his watch. He only had two days left to move the gold before they came barking. With some of the money he was left with, he bought two huge boxes and headed to the house with a hired moving van.The guards stationed at the house moved closer to the house the moment they noticed the van. Their gaze fixed on whatever the movers were carrying out of the house.Daniel ignored them and went straight to the study room, locked it, and opened the gold enclosure. He still had two da
Shelly kept her eyes wide open, watching and enjoying Daniel's reaction. She could see his fists clenched. His cheeks were flushed. He was on the verge of exploding.Daniel had his gaze locked with hers. She was one of the few people he had forgotten to add to his list of people that he was going to make beg on their knees. One day she was going to pay for treating him like garbage and throwing him out when he looked no longer useful, he thought to himself.Michael was also enjoying the public display of their affection. He wrapped his hands around Shelly's waist, causing her to giggle loudly. The other female students were envious as they continued to film. The new lovebirds were entertaining to watch and were not lacking in giving out gossip content. Daniel cast a glance around, watching. Everyone seemed to be enjoying and encouraging their stupidity, causing him more rage. Before he could move, an arm grabbed him. He turned to find Craig's sister, Catherine, smiling. "Hello, Danie
Carol froze in horror, her heart pounding in her chest. Before taking a seat, George turned and shut the door behind him. He drove straight from the house to the hospital. He was smelling filthy, his face was flushed and he appeared to be burning.Carol maintained her position, silently watching him take off his jacket and unbutton his sleeves."All I want are the right answers to my questions, and I will leave you alone," he finally said, still panting slightly.Carol tried to move her hands beneath her sheets. She was certain her phone was on the left side of the bed. Unfortunately, her trembling hands pushed the phone, causing it to fall to the side of the bed with a bang.George cocked his neck in annoyance. He stood up, picked up the phone, and placed it on the other side of the medicine tray."As I previously stated, I do not wish to harm you. I only want correct answers to my questions."Carol swallowed hard and straightened her back."Where is " THAT THING?""What?" she asked,
