CHAPTER 35: A DAY AFTER

The next morning's winds were swift as the day they'd expected came with a slap on their faces, the wind pulled and pushed the whistling pine trees so they bent and twisted as if bowing to a dusty demigod, their leaves and branches making the same sound as a football's referee's whistle.

The cars were parked lazily in the driveway, Spears Mansion seemed lifeless, and the workers and maids were not busy compared to the other days.

Romsey stood by the hibiscuses, giving directions, one had sunk in the pocket of his white trousers while the other pointed from item to item.

"You'll be taking these items with you while you go see Mom at the hospital, she was rushed down there early today," he said to Ellen who was staring at him as though not understanding the language.

Robson and Prince, the new decorator emerged from the hallway a sullen look shown on their faces.

Mr. Spears had not returned, he and the daughters were at the hospital with Mrs. Seraphina.
