Hope

My apartment door swung open, the silence shattered by Maggie's rushed entrance. Worry etched lines on her face, replacing the usual warmth in her eyes. Relief washed over me, momentarily easing the throbbing pain in my ankle. But before I could speak, she was bombarding me with questions.

"Ben! Are you okay? Your garage was open, your phone wouldn't answer… I was going crazy!”

Guilt gnawed at me. "Just a misunderstanding," I lied, forcing a smile. "Left the garage open by mistake, the phone died."

Her expression remained doubtful. "Misunderstanding? What happened?"

My mind raced. Could I confide in her? Reveal the danger, the secrets I carried? No, not yet. The risk was too great.

"Just some trouble with… work stuff," I mumbled, hoping it would suffice. "Nothing to worry about."

Silence hung heavy in the air, her gaze piercing through my evasion. Finally, she sighed, her shoulders slumping.

"Alright, if you say so. But promise me you'll be careful."
