4. An Uncaring Child

It was getting dark and Edward and Louis were still at the crime scene.

"The owner of the apartment? This morning I saw him leave in a hurry," said a woman who lived in the vicinity.

*BeepBeep

Edward's cell phone vibrated in his pocket. Edward carefully picked up his cell phone then looked at the screen.

"Peters?" Edward took the call from Peter.

"Her husband will be used as a suspect... if you have evidence, bring it here quickly." Peter's voice sounded a little shaky due to the telephone line.

"The detention will start tomorrow" Peter said over the phone.

"Don't worry, everything will be clear soon" Edward said then hung up the phone.

"Louis" Edward called Louis who was looking around with a flashlight in his hand.

"Yeah..." Louis replied.

"Let's check the apartment one more time" Edward said as he walked up to the crime scene.

Edward and Louis came in and turned on the lights and checked around.

“No fingerprints at all...” Edward muttered.

After a while they finally found nothing that could help him in that case.

Edward checked his watch and the hand pointed to nine.

"Hey what are you doing?" Edward asked Louis who was sitting casually at the table reading a book.

"Mmm" Louis lifted the book in his hand.

"Looks like I have to bring out my most potent way" Edward held his chin.

"Let's go" he continued.

"Ah, wait a moment" Louis ran into his room and took some books stored in a cardboard box.

Edward waited while Louis came over with a bunch of books in his hands.

"What did you bring the book for?" Edward raised his eyebrows.

"To be read... what else is there for" Louis got into the car and put his books in the back seat and left one book that he started to read.

Edward glanced occasionally to see Louis who was seriously reading his book.

A few moments later.

"Is this really the place?" Edward kept his eyes on a house that looked nice.

"Yes I'm sure this is the place" Louis from behind walked slowly with a book in his left hand.

*Ting

The doorbell rang for a moment. but still quiet and no one came out of the house.

"Isn't there anybody?" Edward watched the house carefully.

Even though the house lights were still on, no one answered the bell at all.

Louis threw his fixed book hard into a window right at the side of the house.

*Blak

Someone behind the window appears and opens the curtains as well as the window.

"Hey what do you think you're doing!" An old woman screams at Louis and Edward from the window where Louis' book is reflecting.

"Oh, we're sorry... it's just a bit of a father and son fight," Edward said to calm the old woman down.

"Tch!" The woman closed the curtains of her house and then did not appear again.

"What are you doing?" Edward looked at Louis.

"Can't we just force our way in?" he asked.

"That's illegal"

"Eeh, then what are you doing now is something legal?" Louis gave Edward a strange look.

"Does he know what I'm going to do? Truly a terrible child" Edward muttered then smiled afterwards.

"This place is quiet, so it will be easy to sneak in." Louis climbed up the front fence and then climbed the pipe and planned to enter through the window on the second floor.

"Eh, where did you learn something like that?" Edward crossed the fence too and climbed up too.

Of course that was normal for Louis, he would always climb out of the window when he was caged like before by his mother.

Louis looked at the window and the room beyond the window was dark. Louis had trouble opening the window from the outside, so Edward fiddled with the window a little and in the end he was able to open it.

...

"Is there really no one?" Louis approached a night lamp beside the bed.

Edward opened the door and stepped out into the larger room. There was a middle-aged man sitting pensively watching the news.

"Mr. Hawkins?" Edward called out to the man.

The man turned to Edward and was very surprised to see him in his house.

"H...how did you get in?" Hawkins asked.

"I pressed the bell repeatedly, but didn't get a response, so I just went in" Edward said.

"I just came to talk" Edward continued.

"Give yourself to the police" Edward said.

Hawkin looked panicked but continued to pretend not to understand what Edward was saying.

Moments later, Louis appeared through the bedroom door carrying a book.

"Your hobby is terrible" Louis said holding a book filled with adult photos.

"Is this your diary?" he asked.

Hawkin was more surprised to see Louis' presence. Hawkin knew Louis because of his connection to Louis' mother.

"Wh...why are you here too?" Hawkin looked panicked seeing the presence of Edward and Louis.

Louis pulled a photo from the book then showed it to Hawkin.

"Even my mother's picture is here" Louis said.

Seeing that, Edward immediately grabbed the book and the photo in Louis' hand.

"You're not old enough to see things like this" Edward rebuked Louis.

"Besides my mother, there are many photos of other women in the book"

"Isn't that considered a crime?" Louis took back the photo of his mother which Edward had stolen and put it in his pocket.

"Turn yourself in to the police for the crime of involuntary manslaughter of Mrs. Scofield." Edward held up a finger.

"That way, I won't report your other sexual crimes," Edward said.

The book contains many photographs of adult scenes captured by Hawkin. and the photos were taken in several different places but most of the photos were taken in his apartment.

It could be a different case if investigated further. But Edward's offer allows him to get rid of his sexual crime case if he turns himself in as the mastermind behind the murder of Louis' mother.

"If you do not accept this offer then you know yourself that your punishment will be doubled" Edward said.

"You came into my house, didn't you also-" before Hawkin could finish his sentence, Edward interrupted and said.

"It's to solve the case, so it won't be a problem for the police"

Hawkin looked doubtful and then confessed in front of Edward and Louis and begged to erase any traces of his other sexual crimes.

...

The next day hot news began to be discussed, news about a murder case in an apartment and Hawkin surrendered himself as the main perpetrator of Ms. Scofield's murder

Louis' father was also arrested for delaying reporting after seeing Ms Scofield die. Also several other charges such as robbery he committed after Ms. Scofield is dead.

All credit goes to the police force for solving the case in just one day.

And a few months later, cases of sexual harassment by Hawkin on several women who had rented his apartment came to light.

That's because Louis reported the crime anonymously to the police and in the end the evidence was collected and Hawkin's prison term was increased.

Because Louis was underage, Edward took custody of him and they moved in together.

Louis is no longer in school and participates in solving cases along with Edward. He also received a recommendation from Edward to become his assistant detective.

...

Two years passed just like that.

New York, April 23, 2000.

In a crime scene cases of cruel murders with a total of 36 victims that can be identified.

"Why isn't he picking up his phone?" Edward looks annoyed as he continues to make phone calls.

"Ed, come here for a moment" a man in a police uniform called Edward to enter the large building in front of him.

"Get there right away" Edward looked annoyed and put his phone in his coat pocket.

Inside the building there are many rooms with glass as a barrier.

In each room there is a chair and a cable connected to a tube on the side.

"A total of 54 rooms and 36 human bodies sitting in several rooms," said the police. That cop is Dave, a cop who often handles big cases.

"Is this some kind of experimental lab?" Edward glanced into one of the rooms.

"Still can't be sure," said Dave.

The place was seen to be filled with police officers running around dealing with problems in the building.

"No suspects yet?" he asked.

"Our team is checking on the owner of this building," Dave answered.

"This is going to be a world-shattering case..." Edward said in a low voice.
