2023-12-23 20:50:32Alex went straight to open the door. The sight before him almost made him throw up.
It was none other than the house owner, a fat and ugly middle aged woman with pores all over her face.
"Alex, pack your things and get out of my house. I am tired of you owning me," she forcefully said.
"Ma, no wait! You can't kick me out!" He retorted. He had nowhere else to go and he could not live on the streets.
"Please," he begged.
"Okay," she paused. "Have you considered my offer yet?" She asked. Her voice was as disgusting as her looks.
"Ma," Alex tried to talk.
"Don't even try that handsome. You know the condition. It's either you sleep with me and take me as your girlfriend or you pay off your rent money. So which is it?" The woman said authoritatively. She wanted to keep Alex simply because he was handsome.
All thanks to Susan and her reckless spending habits, Alex had no deposit and no savings.
He cringed when he remembered the amount of debts he was in because he wanted so badly to impress his girlfriend.
As he thought, he remembered that he had five million sitting in his account.
Immediately, he shook his head. He couldn't touch that money. That was probably a mistake by his bank and if he spent a dime from it, he knew very well that they would come for him and press legal charges making it super difficult for him to graduate from college.
Alex was left with no other choice than to beg.
"Please ma, give me a few more days. I promise I will pay you."
The woman shook her head.
"No, I have given you so many chances to pay. I'm going to give you two more options, either agree to my proposal and we can forget about your rent, heck I'll even give you three thousand dollars monthly, it seems like you badly need it, or you can pay off your rent right now" she said in annoyance
She had admired Alex for long and missed a man's touch even longer. At this point, she didn't even care as much for the rent anymore, she wanted to sleep with him and was going to threaten Alex till he gave in
Alex remained speechless for a moment, deep in thought. In the past, he had managed to tell her off, but now Martha's will was unwavering, it was either he gave her the five thousand dollars right now or... he felt his stomach churn again and couldn't even complete the thought.
Seeing Alex's deep thoughtful state, Martha, the landlady, said "I will give you a third option"
"If you can't pay up, you can find yourself out in the cold this instant" she said with a mischievous smirk and slowly approached him
"Is that what you want Alex? Would you rather spend the night and the rest of the days out in the cold, or you can come to me and I'll keep you warm through the night" Martha said teasingly
Alex looked at the woman as if she had gone mad.
"Ma, have you lost your mind?!" He reacted. "I have been begging you to please extend it by a few more days. I will definitely pay you your money but you insist on being so disgusting as asking a man who is so much younger than you to be your boyfriend? Are you not ashamed of yourself?"
The landlady gasped. "Are you talking to me like that?" She asked in shock.
"Yes, you should be ashamed of yourself."
"Okay, you listen here. It seems you have grown wings in my house. For that, you absolutely have to pay me today or else, I will ensure that I get you arrested," she shouted.
In the middle of their argument, Alex saw his neighbor's door opening and a sleepy beautiful blonde girl walked out.
Her auburn hair shone in the flicker of the fluorescent light in the hallway, with piercing blue eyes that captured Alex's attention. Her beauty couldn't be compared to some of the glamor models on TVs and magazines
She wore a light linen nightdress that slightly revealed her beautiful curves and figure and Alex was stunned.
"Jeez! Can you two keep it down?!" She said in annoyance
Immediately Martha saw her, her entire demeanor changed and she politely said
"I'm sorry Ms Gavin, I didn't mean to disturb your sleep, it's just this tenant has refused to pay his rent and has been owing for about two weeks now"
"Is that why you won't let me sleep?" The girl asked sighing dejectedly
"I'm sorry Ms Gavin" Martha apologized quickly
Solane gazed at Alex momentarily and then turned back to Martha "How much does he owe?" She asked
Martha looked slightly puzzled by the question. However, she quickly answered "One thousand"
Immediately, Solane walked back into her room and emerged a few moments later handing out five thousand dollars to Martha, "There, now please try not to disturb my sleep anymore"
Martha held the money, confused about what to do next. Then suddenly, she turned to Alex and said coldly "You're lucky this time. If you owe me again even past the day of your rent, I'll throw you out" then walked away
Immediately Martha left, the space between Alex and Solane was filled with awkward silence
"Thank you, I'll pay you back..." Alex then said, breaking the silence, but before he could complete his sentence, Solane turned and walked back into her room, closing the door.
Suddenly, a call came through his phone and it was still an unknown number.
Reluctantly, Alex picked the call.
"Hello," he said.
"Hello, is this Alexander Albert?"
"Yes, this is him."
"I wanted to confirm if you got the money," the man said.
"What money?" Alex tried to feign ignorance.
"Well, we sent you five million dollars. Are you telling me that you did not receive it?"
"Okay, what exactly is your problem? I have told you to stop playing pranks on me. Now, take back that illegal money before I report you to the police."
"The money isn't illegal. it's your inheritance," the man repeated himself.
Alex couldn't believe his ears. Could this man actually be telling the truth? "How do I know for sure that it's my money? And who are you?"
"Who I am doesn't matter. I just wanted to confirm if you've gotten the money" the voice returned
"I know it's not enough, but try not to blow it all so quickly. I know you must be confused and have lots of questions, so come to the 99th Light Group Building, I'll be there to answer all your questions'' the man said and immediately hung up the call
Alex remained confused for some moments, could this be an attempt at a kidnapping? His mind delved into many possibilities, but then he quickly resolved them and decided to meet with the man, right after texting his friend Andy where he was headed to.
He grabbed his coat and after a few minutes, arrived at the Light Group Building, which was the biggest enterprise in the city. Many wealthy residents and elites lived and worked near the area, and as such the security around the place was very tight.
Alex walked in, happily but was immediately stopped at the gate.
"Hey, stop there. Are you lost?" a guard said.
"Please leave, we don't allow beggars to come in here," he said once he reached Alex.
"I am not a beggar," Alex corrected him. "I am here to see a man on the 99th floor."
The guard looked at him and shook his head.
"Listen here, I don't know what you heard but I am telling you that we don't allow beggars in here. So please leave," he repeated himself, staring disgustedly at Alex.
"But I said..."
"You said you want to go to the 99th floor but you didn't tell me who you want to see there. Meaning that you don't know anything about this building, so please get out." The man argued but Alex wasn't one to back down. He needed to know the source of that money and so he retorted back.
"I was told to come to the 99th floor and I am not leaving till I get there." Their argument drew a lot of attention to them and soon, people were gathered to know what was going on.
"What's happening here?" The head security asked.
"Sir, this young man said he wants to meet someone on the 99th floor. I told him that we don't accept beggers here and that he should leave but he does not want to go away."
"I am not a beggar!" Alex said again.
"Young man, who exactly do you want to meet on the 99th floor? Give us a name."
"I don't have a name. I only received a call and I was told to come to the 99th floor."
"Told by whom? Listen, if you don't know who you are going to meet, then we can't let you in. Please leave," the man said and pointed at the door.
Before the man could say another word, Alex dashed off and ran straight to the elevator.
In a haste, he ran into a brunette wearing a white shirt with coffee in one hand and documents in the other.
The collision caused her coffee to pour all over her shirt.
"Shit," Alex said. "I am so sorry," he said wiping the coffee off her shirt in a haste. Accidentally, his hand touched her breast.
The woman looked from his hand to his face and screamed immediately.
"Help, he is trying to abuse me!" She screamed, alerting the guards once more.
Immediately, Alex pushed her off the elevator and closed the doors.
The woman got so angry.
"Well, what are you guys doing here? Go and arrest him," using her position as a manager, she commanded them.
"Ma, we can't do anything about it. He is headed to the 99th floor. Nobody is allowed to go up there because that is where the CEO works."
The woman huffed. "Fine. You wait down here then. He will definitely come down and once he does, you better arrest him. I want to make him pay for this," she said, her eyes brimming with anger.
