I closed my eyes for a second and sighed.

I nodded and on impulse gave him a light tap on the arm. He did nothing, neither get angry nor return it. He possibly he didn't even feel it.

I took one last breath before starting to walk, and he kept pace with me. Whether or not that was annoying to him—walking at the same pace as a human—Khaius never mentioned.

"Wait," he said, suddenly looking slightly alarmed, "you don't have a special affection for that boy, do you?" I mean, you don't like it, do you? Because then I'm going to go find Akhliss, and I'm going to kick her ass.

My feet took two more steps and I stopped, unsteady. I frowned, questioning what he just said meant. It took me a minute to understand.

"Oh no," I assured him, laughing a little.
