My breathing quickened, and I wasn't able to keep the fear and desperation inside me at bay. Mabrax held Claire's gaze for a couple of seconds, until she smiled.

“I'm afraid my interest in you is over, Claire,” he said, then nodded toward me. Now you're only here because this girl cares more about everyone else than herself.

I heard Claire whisper “Please” over and over again as fresh tears ran down her cheeks, but he had already stopped looking at her.

I stared at the face of the demon in front of me, searching for any hint of a lie, anything that would tell me that what he had told me about my parents was nothing more than a deception. I stared at him, and he just returned a calm and easy look.

I couldn't distinguish anything in his pupils that would reveal otherwise. I could only see the malice and satisfaction etched in them, the smugness written in their features.
