I stood up, setting the now empty plate aside, and went to my parents' bedroom. I thanked heaven that they hadn't left the latch on and I went in there.

As carefully as I could, I searched in the huge closet, in the clothing drawers, in all the furniture I could, without really finding anything that could help me. He didn't know exactly what he was looking for, only that it must be something out of place. Something strange that had to do with me, abnormal information, whatever. But I found nothing but invoices and other papers from my father's work.

So I decided to go down to the basement, the only place I could think of to keep snooping around.

I started taking out the first boxes, the ones that were at my height, ignoring the ones where I knew the Christmas decorations and other things were stored. I only found more paperwork that didn't interest me, but I had already entered a state of extreme stubbornness, almost maniacal.

So I kept peering into more boxes, tiptoeing to reach them
