Kaleb
My brother, Alec, suggested we kept on moving no matter what. It seemed like an impossible journey, but we kept on going forward with our dizzy eyes. We had become so tired up to the point that it even became unbearable. Looking very tired, Alec, who seemed determined to move on before, also couldn’t hide it anymore.“It seems we’re safe now.” Alec yawned. Maybe some shut eyes here.” He referred to the spot we halted at. His voice sounded weary as he spoke. We did get shut eyes— but it was only for a while. Saying we were safe now was something we were wrong about and should never say. As Alec and I rested once again, we heard an abrupt sound of a tree branch crack. We were taken aback and rose up quickly to look at each other. We still stared at each other but it seemed to have not come from any of us.'What could be in the woods?'We didn't speak. We just nodded our heads negatively to confirm we hadn't made the noise. Slightly, my heart began to lurnch with pain and my stomach churned. We couldn’t even have proper rest. Even after we thought we were safe, we still were caught off guard. A burly man in a Rocainian army’s vest suddenly jumped at us from nowhere. He managed to get a hold of my brother, caging him tightly in his arms. My brother struggled so much to free himself from the grasp but he just couldn't move. Nile neighed and tried stomping on the attacker but a sword was thrown at her, giving her a deep cut.“You hella of a troublemakers, huh?” You think you’re clever aigh? You just got lucky. This time, no escaping. You think you can escape your punishment, you deceitful creatures?”I was on the verge of fighting this man that had attacked us, but another angry Rocainian came from behind and attacked me.“They’re here!” He alerted the others.I bit onto the angry man’s arm and he let go. I kicked him in the groins and he fell down on his knees, moaning loudly. As I quickly unsheathed the sword that dangled in his baldric, I didn't hesitate to use it on him. I advanced the sword at him with a wailing noise.Meanwhile, my brother was being dragged by the burly man. The man tried tying him up with a rope, but Alec kept on struggling. I angrily ran to them and stabbed the warrior from behind. When the man finally fell with blood gushing out of him, Alec and I had a short moment of silent-staring at him, then at each other.I was breathing harshly, and at that moment I felt a sudden surge of new strength in me. It felt like with the sword in my hands I could do anything. Alec gave a glance at the two lifeless warriors that were now on the ground before running to Nile. He finally let out, “We should get going now. She’s not gonna make it.” a subtle sadness showed in his voice as he spoke. The sounds of more horses were heard coming our way. I remembered the chasers I counted were four in number.“There’re two more!” I informed Alec.It was dark at night so we couldn't quite see clearly nor predict our enemy’s exact spot. The moonlight was the only light available. This was a nocturnal attack. I felt a sudden arrow pierce through my right leg making me moan loudly in pain, falling. A warrior came down from a horse having a heavy rope in his hands, and he used it to tie me up. Alec also battled for his life! These men didn't seem to take it easy on us. We were being beaten up to a pulp and slowly began losing consciousness. I didn't know how, but my brother managed to free himself from his attacker and came to my rescue.I saw Alec bring out a dagger from his clothing and drove it into the man that had me. The dagger Alec had used wasn't from the attackers so it made me wonder why he had such a weapon with him in the first place. Who was he intending to use it on before now?Well, it didn't matter now because it was what saved me. He cut down the rope and I was free again. As he tried helping me up, the man he had stabbed before took me by the leg and I fell. Also, the other warrior I thought Alec had taken care of, came out of nowhere and throttled him with the rope. The dagger fell from Alec’s hand as he tried releasing his neck. While this was going on, my attacker used that knife, still struggling with his injury, and gave me a slice at my back. As I crawled on the ground, I felt it tear through my shirt and my skin. I had already gotten injured from the arrow one of them had shot at my leg. It made it difficult for me to walk. I pulled out the arrow from my leg, groaning accordingly, and punctured his eyes with it. The whole thing reminded me of training. We fought with any style that suited us, and were taught to fight with rage and sense of survival. This was how Alec and I had fought, and probably why I thought we had a chance of winning. The thing that differentiated us from these men was their huge stature and also strength from being older. Otherwise, nothing.I managed to get on one of the Rocainian’s horses; the black one. But my brother had been captured. He was tied, blindfolded and thrown into the caged carriage. My attacker groaned in severe pain, still having the arrow in his eye and stab wound that my brother had given him. While Alec’s own capturer had now noticed I had escaped, fear hugged me tighter! I was injured and wasn't strong enough to fight back. It was my only chance at escaping. I had no other option than to ride away on the warrior’s horse at speed!KalebS|n: surnameI felt giddy. My eyes opened slowly and the first thing my eyes met was a big thick clothe strewn over me. I looked around to see myself lying beside harvested farm produce. My body moved rhythmically to the movement of the carriage I was in. I wondered what had happened and how I got captured again. After all my efforts, I still ended up being taken as a prisoner.Although I found the farm produce on the carriage strange. I began to recollect what had happened. I remember escaping on a horse, then fell off due to my unbalanced position and lack of control over the hostile horse. I knew I felt rain pouring on me, and that was it. I had blacked out for the rest parts. I felt a severe headache as I rose up. My hands were free which was another weird thing I observed. Why would they capture me and let me move freely in a cart that wasn’t escape-proof? I could escape if I wanted to. Maybe I was wrong. I couldn't escape since I was weak and weary. I removed the doub
KalebThe old fellow had told me that I could call him Grandfather or Pa for short. He helped take care of my wounds better. He was very friendly to me. He was someone I certainly did not even know before now, yet showed concern.I still occupied the room I had slept in.“Have this,” he said to me, giving me a large sized shirt and a pair of brown pants. “You can join us for breakfast after you wash up.”He was about leaving the room when I asked him, “Is this Forestille?”With a friendly grin plastered across his face, he replied, “Well, this as you can see is my little cottage where I farm. A single house can not be a town. Although Forestille's just a few miles away.”“Can you take me there?” I inquired, possessing an amount of hope.“You should have a bath and eat first.”He then left the room and closed the door behind him.At the breakfast table, seeing the way the food was arranged across the table made me realize that I had not had anything to eat for days! I was starved!God,
DarlaThe both of them cheerfully danced to the tune of the music. The singers at the festival did not fail to showcase their melodious voices as they performed. Kaleb nervously stared at Beryl in complete ignorance of what to do.She held his hands like a captain stirring a boat, controlling his every step. He was so bad at it, I thought in my head almost laughing out loud.Of course I maintained my non-interested look and behaviour, but the sight was so lovely. I felt my cheeks lift from their usual grumpy position. Looking at Kaleb, was it just me or he actually seemed really shy, not just because of his unfamiliarity with dancing, but just being around Beryl?I was still standing there, enjoying this blissful show before I suddenly felt my body move. It followed the hand that dragged me.“Dance, Darla. Dance,” Beryl said to me as she stood in our middle, with our hands locked in hers doing the cancan dance.I admit, it was actually fun. Freeing one's self from hate and worries onc
DarlaBeryl was obviously surprised to see him. They had a short moment of silent staring before she finally spoke. She made sure her warm smile was on and she demonstrated accordingly.“Fair greetings.” The pretty princess-like lady finally broke the silence with her euphonious voice. “I’m maiden Berylene. You certainly do not look from around here. May I know where you’re from?”'Certainly not.' I said in my head. 'How does this sound to you? I’m a murderous Rocainian that killed a man before coming here and hope to do more. You know, the killings.'I saw that Kaleb actually did not look like he had a possible reply for the lady. I would have jumped right in to help but it felt funny watching him struggle.“Oh, forgive my undoubtedly silly question. We all know only Forelenes live amongst Forelenes. It's just that you have splendid eyes.”She gave a nervous giggle at the end.Kaleb's cold expression was probably what made him Kaleb. He did not seem friendly at all. It was as if all
Forelenes are said to be happy people that depend on their various livelihoods for survival. They are aware of the war, but the people of Forestille choose not to be a part of it. Unlike the Rocainians who have armies of warriors ready to fight and train their children to join these warriors someday, some Forelenes have decided to not even hold a weapon against anyone at all. Darla and her grandfather are farmers that occasionally travel out of town to where their farmland is. Their place of farming was where they found Kaleb, known as Stranger Boy by Darla. When they return from travel, they supply the town’s marketers with these goods._________________________Darla Another bright day dawned in Forestille. People would usually wake up to the sound of the birds tweeting and the ever-lively atmosphere. For me, that had now changed ever since I started living under the same roof as a Rocainian. Pa was gullible. He was too friendly.Be nice and see nice was what he would often say.H
Darla“But I do know he’s charmingly handsome,” Berylene spoke as though in a reverie. I noticed Beryl smile, making me retch at her.“How are you suppose to know what it feels like?” She added, defending herself. She attacked me with her penetrating gaze. “You’ve never loved and will never love with that attitude.” She then huffed.Beryl knew I wasn’t going to react to this since she knew me and how less I cared for such ludicrous things. I did not uphold such a task to execute. She held my hand and soon I found myself running behind her again.‘Where to this time?’“Take care you two!” The ladies in the saloon waved at us, bidding us temporal goodbyes for the day. They smiled at us, enthusiastically.Berylene’s attitude had a way of always persuading people around her to do things they’d never really want to do or knew they could in a cheerful manner. She was an invigorating beign and sunny. Most of the other Forelenes my age had a tad amount of fear for me because of my haughty p
As I caught my breath bending my knees, my eyes suddenly alighted on a figure by the edge of the platform near the lake. It was a familiar black-haired person. With no doubt it was Kaleb, I went a bit closer to this person leaning my head forward to see him. It was actually him. I didn’t make the slightest noise. I stood there feeling annoyed as he had literally made me run for nothing. Also, seeing how Kaleb was, I wondered why he looked that way. His position said sad. The way he sat with his legs folded made him look like a child who had just been abandoned by his parents. I did not feel pity for him and wasn’t expecting myself to. All I wanted was to confront him and bellow out my anger. I would ask him why he chose to make me worry. I would ask him why he didn’t head back home to Pa. I would warn him never to… Never to…I started to hear moaning noises from him. My head moved slightly forward as I tried to confirm if what I heard was correct. The sound continued. I gingerly w
DarlaBerylene came over to help me dress for the get-together. She tightened my belt and I tried not to scream.“Tighter,” She said as she tortured my stomach with the so-called corset. “Tighter!”“Enough!” I exclaimed, breathing harshly. I now almost fell but used the wooden cabinet beside me as support. I let out a puff of air as I stared at my reflection in the mirror. I gulped and tried steading my breath as I was panting.“You look like the beautiful damsel that you are.” She said stressing the word ‘beautiful’“It’s really killing me. Maybe loosening it a little would help,” I winced while holding my waist still looking at the mirror. I did look beautiful, wearing the pretty dress her mother had made for me.“She would be so pleased to see you in this dress,” Berylene said to me from behind resting her chin on my shoulder with arms wrapped around my waist. She said as her hands felt my waist, “Maybe we should loosen it up a little. The thing’s damn tight!”It was a black long
