CHAPTER SIX

He didn’t sleep the all night. He kept turning from one side to the other. The discussion Eliza and her mother, together with the grandmother had kept echoing in his head. They wanted her to sign the divorce papers in exchange for them selling their shares. But he didn’t want to divorce his wife. And he was not going to allow it to happen.

Then there is the thing with the call he received. He was supposed to go there in the morning tomorrow. He needed to pass to the bank and get some bank statements for the company he did not know. They told him they knew him and he was supposed to be there. But he was clueless to what it was about. Why they called him for the meeting?

He hadn’t applied for any job. But they have been trying to contact him for some time now. He sighed as he turned yet again. His eyes were wide awake.

This might just be the thing that saves his marriage. That saves his wife’s company. Because she was the only one that seemed to care about it. They all didn’t bother as long as they get something by the end of the day.

Jackson was going to take advantage of the situation if this didn’t turn out to be his breakthrough.

“This just has to be it,” he spoke.

It was not until morning that he started feeling sleep. Around four in the morning, his eyes started feeling heavy and with time he fall asleep.

*

A loud knock knocked him off his sleep. He jumped from bed and answered whoever it was to enter.

And it was Eliza, “morning,” he said. “Do you need anything?” He asked her, rubbing a hand through his eyes.

“No,” she began, and then moved her hands from behind. What was this about? “I wanted to give you this,” she handed the papers to him.

“Eliza, what is this supposed to mean? You know I can’t go through with this and you shouldn’t as well. Why are you doing this to us?” He spoke as she handed him the divorce papers. “I will not sign this,” he spoke and threw the papers down.

“Trevor, don’t make this harder than it is for me. Just sign the papers and you will be free of all this. You can go and find a wife that loves you and something that will work out for you. You will just keep suffering here,” she spoke.

What was this now? He can’t allow this to happen. Not now, at least. He needed to keep her occupied. He can’t allow her to go ahead with all this nonsense.

“Eliza, we are not going to continue this conversation. I’m not signing them and that is my final answer. You are my wife and I’m not giving up on our marriage because of some shares. Because you want to save the company and they are taking advantage of that,” he said as he rested his hands on her shoulders. “Clearly you also don’t want to do this.”

She stepped back. “You were eavesdropping on us? What the hell is your problem? And you don’t understand what is going on. I don’t have time to start explaining things to you. Just sign those papers,” she scolded.

“Just give me by the end of today and I will get you out of this mess,” he pleaded.

“Trevor, we are not in a fantasy movie. I don’t have time and you can do nothing to get me out of this mess. You are a leave in son-in-law. Sign the papers. That is all I ask of you,” she spoke and left without giving him time to retort.

There was no way he was going to allow this to happen. Not in this life or the next. He was going to make this right. Do whatever it takes.

As he was getting ready, a call reached him. It was the same woman that called him yesterday.

“Hello,” he spoke.

“Morning sir. I just wanted to remind you that we are waiting for you here. And that you shouldn’t forget to get the bank statements because we need your investors to see what we are talking about. That we mean business,” she told him.

His investors? Was this all a joke? Was someone trying to play with him? He didn’t have investors. He didn’t have a company, and he had no money in any bank for him to get bank statements.

“Listen mom, I’m confused with all this. I don’t have an investor nor do I have a company. What are you talking about?”

“You can call me Charity. And I will explain everything when you come here. Just hurry because we have only an hour and thirty minutes for them to come here. Pleas hurry,” she laughed lightly before hanging up the call.

His heart thumped as her words ringed in his head. He just finished up — not even bothered that he hadn’t done any chores for the day. He took everything he needed and wore the only suit he ever owned. The one he wore at his wedding with Eliza.

He went out as hurriedly as he could. Not allowing any of his in-laws to see him and have them ruining his chances of seeing what this was about.

He went out and took a taxi even when he had no money.

After what felt like an hour to him when it had just been thirty minutes, they reached the Zambia national bank. He got out and told the driver to wait for him.

He entered the bank and walked to the manager’s office. And the man was all smiles as he entered. Welcoming him with respect. No one has even done that for him. Was it the suit?

“Morning sir,” he said as he took his sit.

“Morning. And what can I do for you today, sir?” He spoke as he looked up at him.

“I want to get the bank statements for my account,” he spoke. Swallowing loudly because he had no account at all. If this turns out to be some joke, he will be humiliated.

“Can you give me you account number, please?” He spoke as he looked at his computer.

He said his phone number to the man. Hoping that would work.

After a few minutes the man spoke, “okay, here it says you have around, a hundred million... dollars,” he said as he looked at Trevor, mouth opened.

He couldn’t believe his ears. That is way too much than he could have thought. His breathing grew louder as the man handed him the statements he needed.

“You are our best costumer sir,” he spoke.

Trevor just took the papers and left the office. Trying to think about what had just happened. Kept pinching himself as if this was all a dream.

He just told the driver to take him to the company Charity told him about.
