Chapter 2

It was 7:40 the next morning when I walked up the steps and found my way to the principal's office on my first day of senior year at Eulogia Academy. The truth is, I was nervous. I haven't had a proper conversation with a human before. I wanted to run back home, but at the same time, I had to pretend to be a normal human.

"Thanks for choosing Eulogia Academy. We are happy to have you here, Miss Sivan." The principal smiled at me across the desk. She was a bit tall and she was also wearing heels. She wore a black blazer, neatly pressed, and her hair was packed into a ponytail. She adjusted her glasses. "I'm principal Elise."

"Thank you for having me here. I'm happy I will also get to study in this beautiful school just like the famous scholars." I swallowed hard.

Principal Elise cupped her hands and put them under her chin. "Listen, if there is anything I can do to help you transition here, you let me know, okay?"

I nodded and gave her a small smile.

The hall was crowded as students stopped to talk with friends. Immediately, the school was buzzing with gossip about the new girl. I stood in the middle of the hallway as I walked by people. I looked around me, trying to find my locker. The school was huge, and the hall was also big. My eyes scanned the halls for the right locker number when they stopped on a tall, dark-haired boy. He was quite attractive, but what made me look in his direction was that he was already staring at me. Suddenly, I was in shock that I was being drawn to a stranger.

I blinked and avoided his gaze. My locker was a few feet down from where I stood as I quickly walked to locker 61. I opened it and put my books inside. I looked over my shoulder to find the dark-haired boy still watching me.

Some lousy boys walked over to him with footballs in their hands. He laughed with them, then turned to shut his locker and disappeared into the crowd of students.

I focused again on my locker.

"So, you are the new girl." Two girls stepped into my line of vision and stopped beside me. I turned to face them. The first girl who spoke was tall. She had long blonde hair. She wore a short leather pink skirt and topped it off with an ankle boot. The second girl who stood next to her was short, almost my height. She had neck-length black hair with three piercings each along her earlobes. They were both beautiful, and now I was curious to know what they had to say because 'Don't trust humans' was what mom said to me before I left.

"Yeah, that's me." I smiled, laughing nervously.

"You are very pretty." The blonde haired girl smirked at me.

I didn't trust them a bit, but still, I pretended. I turned to close my locker and looked back, but the two girls were gone. The two girls were nowhere to be found when I looked down the hallway.

Another girl approached me as I turned to face my locker. Oh no, not another one, I thought. She had long black hair, and I was instantly jealous of her beauty.

"That's Jada, the cheerleader's captain."

"Hmm, she's convincing." I turned to look at her.

She grinned at me, revealing her perfect white teeth. "Hi, I'm Denise."

I decided I liked this one. She seems nice. "I'm In..."

"Inez Sivan. You are the gossip of our school today." She cut it, taking me by surprise, then I nodded. "There will be a match by 3:30 pm today on the field. You should come. Everyone will be there." She added.

I didn't have anything to do after school, so I accepted her offer, and then Denise, too, disappeared into the crowd.

It was approximately 3:40 when I walked into the field. The crowds were clapping. The cheerleaders were flipping and making their moves to encourage the players. Immediately, I saw Denise as she waved at me. I walked to meet her and then sat next to her. We focused on the players immediately after the cheerleader's captain did her last and final routine.

I could see the dark-haired boy staring at me again before placing the helmet on his head. He ran towards the other players as they gathered to talk or pray or whatever it was they always do.

'That's their captain, Chase Parker. He is also the son of the richest man in this town. The girls love him and he was Jada's ex-boyfriend." Denise said and looked at me.

"Ex-boyfriend?" I asked. My gaze met hers, and she nodded.

"You find him attractive?" she asked.

"Don't you?" I said more in the manner of a rhetorical question than a question.

"Who doesn't?" She questioned in response. "He is the typical boy for every girl's dream guy." She added.

"Hmm, so what is this called?" I asked, referring to the game they were playing.

Honestly, we don't do this in the Shadow World. Instead, you will see kids playing with the skulls of their ancestors.

She gave me a startled look as she turned to face me.

"What?" I asked with a smile.

"You don't know what football is?"

"Football? Is that what this is called?"

"Yes, it is called "football."

'But the football dad watched last night and was playing on foot, but this one was by hand and they're even wearing helmets, which is weird.'

Denise snickered. She took a breath and turned her gaze back to the field. "Okay Inez, this is American football, also called gridiron football, and it also has rules." Her focus briefly returned to me before vanishing again and returning to the field.

"Which are?" I asked. Likewise, I averted my eyes from her and turned to the field to watch the game. I concentrated on Chase, who had the ball in his hands and was being pursued by other players wearing a different uniform.

"If they kick a field goal, then the other team gets a possession. If they score a touchdown, they win. If they tie the score by kicking a field goal, then the next team that scores wins. If the team with the first possession turns the ball over without scoring any points, then the first team to score wins. Got it now?"

"I guess so, but this team they are playing against is really strong."

"I know, but the Chase team is stronger, they win all the time, and they have made this school proud."

As we concentrated on how the other team attempted to take the ball away from Chase's team, I exclaimed, "Wow." They kept pushing themselves onto the ball and they were really strong. One of the other team players rashly used his helmet to fight for the ball, and one of Chase's teammates was hurt by the steel in the helmet.

His shoulder was bleeding as he collapsed to the ground. The crowds stopped applauding, and there was silence instead. The trainers were summoned, and they carried the injured boy into the hall.

Despite not wanting to, my good eyesight and focus allowed me to see the blood on the floor. I didn't feel good about it.

Not again.

Once more, and quickly this time, my fangs were bursting their way out.

I turned to face Denise. The crowd stood to cheer for Chase's team as they prepared to resume the game, and I had my hands over my mouth. When Denise wasn't looking at me, I ran as quickly as I could to get away from the blood that was capturing my attention.
