Chapter 5

When the bell rang, it was time to leave, but I didn't leave until 6:00 since I had to see the principal about how poor my math grades were. I will be walking home today since my dad went out in his car.

I took a shortcut through the woods and began walking. The wood was peaceful.

A few minutes later, I heard a scream. "Help me, someone help me." I ran towards where the sound was coming from. The scream got louder. I stopped when I saw a figure biting a woman's intestines and flesh.

On instinct, I yelled. "Hey, get off of her," I said bravely as I threw a stone at it.

When I saw his face, I was in shock. The monster finally stood up and growled. He was huge and he looked at me. I saw the blood and got tempted to feed, but I didn't want to be a monster. I'm not a monster. I remind myself. I started breathing fast as I moved back step by step, swallowing hard. I turned and started running. I ran without looking back to see if the beast was chasing after me or not.

"Mom," I screamed, as I ran into the house and shut the door behind me. Panting, I used all the locks in front of the door to secure it even more. "Mom-I-I saw a beast." I stuttered. "I think it followed me from the shadow world," I said, panicking.

"Calm down, baby." She approached me and placed her hands on my face and hugged me. "That's not possible; the Silas brothers can't pass through the barrier."

I released myself from her grip. "What are the Scilas brothers?" I looked at her, confused. I had no idea about anything or everything that was happening.

"It's a who, not a what." Dad interrupted.

"They are the psychic bloodsuckers, and they can sense prey the moment they feel you are insightful." Mom continued.

"You, as an immortal, can also sense them and see them, but humans can't unless you give them the vision to." Arden intervened. "So, since you are not dead, yet... they are not here." He added.

"But mama, I saw the beast rip the woman apart and was eating her flesh and intestines: everything!!!" I became serious, but they still didn't believe me. 'I saw the blood, mom, and I couldn't control myself. I wanted to go to it and also feed on it, plus my fangs were forcing their way out. I ran as fast as I could to avoid both the blood and the beast." I opened my teeth for them to see the fangs, but my teeth were already normal.

Mom looked at Dad, and then Dad looked at me. "Sit dear." He said this as Arden turned on the TV.

"See, there is no news, so I don't think you saw a beast," Arden said. Immediately after he left, the news came up, and we all focused on the screen.

The NYPD was tying tape around the scene, and the photographers were taking pictures. "What type of animal would have done this?" a police officer said.

"We don't know, sir, but whatever you did, this is not normal." Another police officer replied.

I looked at my parents. "You see, I'm not going mad."

"Okay, how about we leave the job to the NYPD to do." Dad implied.

I started to laugh the moment I heard my dad say that. "We all know the NYPD won't survive and they will die if they go after that thing."

"True and more will be back if we don't stop them now." Mom agreed, then looked at me. "Let's visit the council." She added.

I stood up. "You all can go. I have homework to do."

"Homework?" dad asked.

"You told me to try blending with humans, dad."

"Okay, you can stay and we will be back before midnight - lock the door," Mom said as they all left the house. I heard the car drive off, I locked the door, and I walked up to my room.

When I got inside, I placed my bag on the bed and went into the shower to have my bath. The thought of the monster I saw came to my mind. I couldn't stop thinking about the blood and the way it ate that woman. The way it had looked at me was so terrifying that I became scared.

A few moments later, after I was done with my bath and changed into my clean clothes, I heard something hit my window. It sounded like a stone.

Who could that be? I went to open my curtains and the window to see who it was. Denise doesn't know where I live, so she couldn't be the one. Maybe Arden has already made new friends and his new friend thinks this is his room.

I brought my head out to see who it was and I saw Chase Parker waving at me. In shock, I closed the curtains and opened them again after a few seconds.

"Let me in," he said as he climbed the ladder and entered through the window after I left the way for him to pass through.

"What are you doing here?" I asked with a sigh. "How did you even know my house?"

"I followed you here and now your house is..."

"Not like other houses... a little lonely and hidden inside the bush?" I asked.

"Kinda off." He placed his hand on his head.

"Okay, wait, did you see the beast?" I needed to ask him since mom said humans can't see them. But asking was definitely a bad idea. Chase being in my room was also a bad idea. The head of the council's words kept running through my mind. "You shouldn't go near him. He is human. You shouldn't be with a human."

"What beast?" he asked as he walked to my bed.

"Never mind," I said instead. I couldn't drag the word any further. If I do, he will ask more questions.

"I only saw a few police cars in the woods." He added as he picked up my homework that was placed on the bed.

"You need to leave," I said, as I looked at him. "My parents will be here any minute." I lied.

"Chill, I just came here to help you out with your math homework. My aunt said you have problems with that and your grades are really bad in today's class."

"Aunty? Who is your aunty?" I asked, confusingly.

"You don't know who my aunty is?"

"No, I don't."

"Well, principal Elise is my aunty."

"I'm not surprised," I replied. Well, I was surprised. "And, yes, I need help," I said.

"I figured." He gave a small smile. Who wouldn't like it if Chase Parker gave them a private tutorial?

"Okay." I handed him my pen and he frowned.

"What are you doing?" he asked as he collected the pen from me.

"What do you mean?"

"I can't do your homework for you." He said, then closed the book.

"Then why are you here?" I asked again.

"I am here to help you."

"Exactly!" I said.

Chase scoffed, and then I placed the book on the bed. "You are getting it all wrong; I am here to help you know it, not help you do it. There is a difference." He said, clearing the air for me to understand.

I frowned and placed my hands on my hips.

"Sit." He said. "Let me teach you the formulas, then you can do the rest yourself." He opened the book again and began to teach me when we both had our seats on the bed. Learning with Chase Parker was a bad idea. I wasn't really focusing because of the things that were running through my mind.

I was stealing glances as he continued to teach me. Why can't I love a human? What was the worst that could happen? Yeah, right. The world would end.

As if.

After hours of studying, we heard a knock on the door.

"Are you expecting someone?" Chase asked.

"Well, I wasn't expecting you, but here you are," I said silently.

"Did you say something?" he asked as he fixed his gaze on me.

"Nothing"

I walked to the living room and opened the door. I saw two men in uniform. They brought out their badges and showed them to me.

"NYPD?" I asked. "What are you guys doing here?"

"Where are your parents?" The first one asked.

"They are not home. Why?"

"I can't talk to a child. We will come back to see them."

"I am 18 and not a child." I rolled my eyes. "In a year from now, I will be a college student."

"We will be back." The second one was assured as they left.

I turned to look at Chase, who was on the stairs staring back at me.
