I walked home immediately after the incident without even attending the rest of the classes. I told my mom what happened and showed her my hand. She removed the plaster and I was already healed. 'You've started your healing process - that's a good thing.' She said.
I ran to my room and took a nice hot bath, and after hours of staying indoors, I decided to go see Chase at the cinema. I wore my black leader short skirt with my ankle boots, and then wore a white long sleeve round neck top. I used my room window as an exit and went through the woods.
When I finally got to the cinema, I saw cars outside and could hear some boys talking. I noticed Larry's voice and saw Chase walking in with his hand around Jada's shoulder. Are they back together? That's the first question that comes to mind. I couldn't go to him. Instead, I headed back home and climbed onto my bed to sleep.
Then I heard a knock on my door. I walked to open it and, to my surprise, it was Arden. I was shocked because Arden had never been to my door since the day we came to the human world. He wasn't at all friendly.
"Are you here to turn me into one of you?" I asked. I went back to my bed and laid down. My head was on my pillow, staring at the ceiling.
He laughed and I joined. "You are my kid sister... and I can't turn you into a bloodsucker." I let him walk into my room, and he turned and focused on me. "You snuck out?" he asked.
"No, I didn't." I tried not to make it obvious that I was lying.
"You know, I can smell you lying," Arden said as he came closer. "That human boy will hurt you. Mama told you not to trust them; you are not one of them. You are the chosen one and also a leader to thousands of lives, so don't try to pretend you are human because you are more powerful than that, Inez." He clarified.
"What exactly do you want, Arden?" I asked as I sat up.
'I came to remind you that time is ticking Inez and if you don't feed before the end of the month then you will be in critical condition and we won't be able to tame you or help you out of it.'
"I can survive and fight this, Arden. Mom and dad did."
"Inez, mama, and papa are different. They had their first feed at age 16, and they will forever be Dhampirs because they can control the blood lust. I turned to this because I was careless... I don't want that to happen to you."
Now he was caring. Arden being nice was weird to me. All my life, I was used to the vicious brother whose only mission in my life was to scare me and threaten to turn me into a full blood sucker.
"I will be fine, Arden. I will overcome this." I replied as he walked towards the door, then he turned to look at me.
"I hope you do, and don't forget to use that plaster for your hand on Monday. You don't want them to run from you and ask you how you don't have any scars after the incident." He said as he shut the door behind him when he walked out of my room.
I never want to have that conversation with him again. It was getting weirder.
I can survive if I don't feed. I know I can. I am the chosen one and I can control my powers. I don't need to feed to be able to save the world.
...
"Inez!" I heard my mom's voice calling from downstairs. I groaned to myself and rolled out of my comfortable bed. It was 8 a.m. on Saturday.
"Inez!" She called again.
"I'm up!" I yelled back. The kitchen door opened and closed. The sound of her preparing breakfast.
I headed to the bathroom and started the shower. The hot water loosened my strained muscles. I hurried and washed my hair and body.
I wrapped the towel around my wet body. My mother called my name again. I ignored her.
"Inez!"
'I'm coming down now. Please don't call my name again!" I yelled as I walked down the stairs.
My phone buzzed as I stretched a little. I checked who the message was from, and it illuminated Denise's name at the top of my screen. She asked if I would be attending a Chase match today at school.
I turned my phone off and dragged my lazy ass to the kitchen.
"Here," Mom said as she dropped a plate of scrambled eggs in front of me. "What are you doing today?" She asked.
I reminded her that I would be going to the Council Region to get more information on Wendigo.
"It's too risky to go there alone." She said as she dropped a cup of water in front of me.
"I'm the chosen one. I can't harm mom, so don't worry." I assured her.
She shook her head and sighed. 'The Wendigo is dangerous and it's still out there. The barrier isn't strong anymore and more creatures will find their way into this world and do anything to find you."
"I will be a fine mother. I will be home early, I promise. No snooping around."
It was my first time in the council lair. I walked into an immensely hectic, planned office. It's predominantly white. Like in the reception area, with ancient-styled black columns reaching up to the high ceiling.
There was a bubble of noise as people in white suits rushed around talking into headsets.
A man strode through them, looking once over his shoulder and raising his eyebrows at me. I recognised him. He was the head of the council that came to my house the other day.
I shook my head to myself and followed him along a walkway between the rows of computers.
As we walked forward, I noticed a number of monitors hanging on the walls. I focused my gaze back on the old man, who had now reached the door to a glass-walled office. He opened it and gestured that I should go inside.
"Take a seat, Miss Sivan," he said. His tone of voice was cold.
I glared at him and walked inside, sitting down in a black armchair facing the desk.
He closed the door and took a seat in front of me. He sighed heavily.
"I didn't really expect you to come here." He said, shaking his head.
"Ah..." I replied dryly, "I came here to know more about the wendigo, and yes, Arden told me that the barrel isn't strong anymore. I want to help."
He shook his head.
"You can't do anything for now. You have to stay safe or it will be over if they find you."
I looked at him angrily.
At least I have to do something. "You said I was the chosen one. Then I need to help them."
He stared at me. "If you really want to help, then..." He sighed again. "It's really difficult. With what I'm about to say."
"What is it?" I raised an eyebrow.
"I'd bet your parents haven't told you yet."
"About?" I asked. I had hoped he wouldn't insist I feed because he would be wasting his time if he told me that
He paused. I stared at him. nonplussed.
"You have to have a taste of blood before the end of this month. I know it's a hard thing to do, but you have no choice."
I rolled my eyes. Just what I was about to hear and he said just that.
"Is this some kind of joke?"
The old man shook his head slowly.
"If you don't, then you die. You, of all people, should know how painful it is when your fangs are hungry for blood. You have to feed it or it's going to kill you."
"I can't drink blood. I might not be able to control my blood lust." I said.
"We will be here to help you. The blood will make you stronger. If you really want to save the world, then you have to be strong." I looked at him for too long and then swallowed.
"I want to know more about Wendigo." I changed the topic."Okay." He said. He took a big book out of the drawer and handed it over to me. " This is the book of supernaturals. You are the only one that can read it since you are chosen. You will know more about what you are looking for in it.""Thank you." I said as I stood up to leave the room."Remember Miss Sivan, the remaining ten days till the month ends. You decide if you want to live or die. It's your choice."The minute I got home, my phone buzzed, and it was from Chase. He asked why he didn't see me at his game. I ignored his message and entered my room. I heard someone knock on my window. I checked and it was Chase. He was here again.I closed my window and ignored him, but he kept calling my name. My parents must not know he was there or I'll get grounded. I opened my window and let him in."I called you five times yesterday...why didn't you pick up?" He asked."I was busy." The truth is, I went to see him at the movies and s
Cutting off my mom's distant protests, I stepped out onto the front porch. And stopped. All the bad feelings of the morning rushed over me again. The anxiety, the fear. And the certainty that something terrible was about to happen.Charles Street was deserted. The tall Elizabethan houses looked strange and silent as always, as if they might all be empty inside, like the houses on an abandoned movie set. They looked as if they were empty people, but full of strange-looking things. That was it; something was watching me. The air was stifling and I could feel that someone or something was watching me.I caught sight of something dark in the branches of an old quince tree in front of the house. It was a crow, sitting as still as the yellow-tinged leaves around it. And it was something that was watching me.I tried to tell myself that this is ridiculous, but I have seen crows like this in the shadow world. It was big and sleek, with rainbows shining in its black feathers. I could see every
The boy moved on down the hallway and went out of sight. Dimly, I realized the bell was ringing. Denise was tugging on my arm."What?" I asked."I said, 'Here is your schedule. We've got classes on the second floor right now. Come on!"I allowed Denise to push me down the corridor, up a flight of stairs, and into the classroom; I slid into an empty seat automatically and fixed my eyes on the teacher at the front without really seeing me.He walked right by. Without a glance, they all looked, at least. Some whistled. Some stopped to talk. Some just stared.Ms. Ryan passed out trigonometry books. I took mine and wrote my name inside, still wrapped in thought."He is looking at you," Denise whispered."Who?" I asked. I was still focusing on the board."Chase." Denise said. The shock that came to me at that moment was a big one. Oh, Chase, Chase Parker. The guy I like but I can't be with or the world will destroy. Last week, Chase was mad at me, and now I don't know if he still is."Is he
The first light of dawn was flashing in the night sky.Corner watched it from the window of his room."How was your first day at school?" A voice said as Corner turned to look at his brother Noah."It was lousy, I mean, those humans were lousy.""What have you been up to, by the way?" He asked."Trying to find the location of our princess."He swallowed and looks at Corner. "You are not telling me everything.""What do you mean?""We are the Scilas brothers. We don't keep things from each other, now spill it!""Noah." Corner began tightly, "I found the princess."Noah stood surprised. "Great, let's take her in and offer her to the king."Corner swallowed hard. "She is more powerful than you think Noah..."Noah did not even blinked. "You've fallen for her," he said instead."No, what I'm saying is that she is powerful and we can't defeat her...the blood of King Cain runs through her even though she doesn't know that...she is the chosen one and also the most powerful Dhampir. She will r
Dear Diary, The wendigo is gone, finally, and mom talked to the council about it. They were so proud of me. I have four days left...it's not getting any easier, with the sudden craving for blood, the sleepless nights, and not being able to focus on anything. I got a text from Chase last night after the fight. He wants to hang out. Mom and the council mustn't find out, but I know he is a good guy. And I want to give him a chance. The bell rang for the first period. I didn't get much sleep last night due to the sudden craving for blood. I saw Denise now. She was with Corner. What was she doing with him? "Inez!" she called as I ran to meet her. "Geez, you look drained. Do you want to go see the school nurse?" "No, I'm fine." I dragged her away from Corner's side. "What are you doing with him?" I whispered, trying not to let Corner hear us. "Nothing...he just wants to borrow my note...and yes, we are late for the first period." She said and I looked behind her shoulder, but Corner wa
We finally took a seat next to the window when the waiter placed the menu in front of us. "You come here often?" I asked. "Yeah, I love coming here when I feel lonely and sad or if I want some alone time." He said as he drank from the cup of water he had ordered earlier. "So, what about you?" "What?" I asked, clueless. "Where do you go when you feel lonely? What cheers you up?" I looked around pointedly, as if my answer was obvious. "I don’t have one. I just go with the flow." I smiled warmly. "That’s weird but cool." He gave a light smile. "You think?" He laughed at me and tilted his head. "Actually, no, but... I guess you can come here anytime. This place has a great view, and especially at night, it’s more beautiful and colorful." "Really?" I asked as I stared out the window. "Yes." Chase said as he got to his feet. "Inez, I will be back in a minute." As Chase left, I looked down at my menu and read through the endless possibilities of fish and other assorted seafood. I w
"Come out you all... I can sense you in that darkness." I said as the tune in my voice changed. "Seriously, Inez, you let that boy drive you home?" Arden said as he shook his head. "Not now, family... not now." I shushed as I ran to my room. I placed my bag on the bed as I removed the supernatural book. ’Why did you light up earlier? Jada saw you do that, ’ I said, and the book opened itself. It stopped on a page, and I ran my hand through the writing. The Silas brothers were in town. I heaved a sigh. "Next time, don’t light up like that; you almost put my life in danger." The book flipped pages again and stopped. I ran my hand through it. Oh no, we have to see the council. I said as I left my room immediately and ran down the stairs. "Dad, I will need a ride to the Council region." "Now?" "Yes, it’s important!" "Let me get my keys. I will be back in a few." he said as he ran to his room. In a few minutes, he was back with weapons in his hand. We all looked at him. "In case we s
The thud of thunder was all I could hear as I rolled over in my bed, my pillow covering my ears. It was exactly 5:30am. The smell of the woods came through my open window, and I could also smell humans from a far distance. That doesn’t seem right, unless my fangs were out and that meant trouble. It was more painful this time, as if I had eaten myself up in my sleep. I looked over my bed and my off-white bed sheet was flooded with my own blood. That has never happened, and it was definitely not a dream. I looked in the mirror but I was not bruised, I looked completely normal but one thing was different. My eyes were red, and this was the first time it would bring that color out. It was strange. My mouth started to crave blood as I began to destroy objects in my room. It was as if I was becoming something, but I was trying so hard not to become that thing. The sound woke up my family, and in a few minutes, I heard someone knocking on my door. "Are you okay, sweetie?" Mom said, behind
