The warden had returned a few minutes after I’d finished my lunch, still wearing her boots and the black coat over her white button-up and tight pants, and took me out to the same spot in the grasslands we’d been in earlier.

Standing two or three feet apart, we faced one another, the gentle breeze of the grasslands feeling good against my face and lightly rustling the warden’s messy ponytail.

“As I mentioned in the dining room,” the shadow primal said, “I will use my magic to hopefully grant you a measure of experience in facing ranged threats by firing small stones at you. Due to your specific situation and magic, you will focus on avoiding these attacks.”

“How small is ‘small’...” I asked, a bit annoyed at the slight trepidation in my voice.
