The body lay still. Edward Feathering was dead.

But Mark felt no victory. No relief.

Only the hollow ache in his chest.

The words Edward had spat with his dying breath echoed relentlessly in his mind—You’ll never see her again, Mark.

It wasn’t over.

Nathan Cross stood silently a few feet away, his gun lowered, his expression grim as the rain finally ceased. The mist from the river curled around the industrial yard, thick and heavy, swallowing the world into silence.

Grayson approached cautiously, lowering her own weapon but keeping a watchful eye on the rooftops. “We need to go. Now. The longer we stay, the more exposed we are.”

Mark remained frozen, his gaze locked on Edward’s lifeless body, his mind racing. Something didn’t feel right.

Nathan shifted closer, voice low but urgent. “Mark. He was just a pawn. Killing him didn’t stop anything—it barely delayed it.”

Mark’s head snapped toward him, eyes blazing. “Then who’s really

“Can’t we just go and beg my mother?” Felicia Feathering looked to her husband but he didn’t reply. “You need a job. We can’t keep living like this. I can’t take it anymore. It’s too much for me.”Mark Julius gazed lovingly at his wife, Felicia Feathering, as she blurted out while preparing breakfast in their small apartment.“For me? Please?” Her eyes were pleading. “We might end up dead before we even realize it. My family is very rich and I’m sure they would help us out.”Felicia’s elegant features and radiant smile belied the worry lines etched on her forehead. Mark knew she was troubled, and he couldn't blame her. Their situation was precarious, to say the least.“You know your mother hates me? Last time I asked for her help, you know what she did?” Mark closed the gap between them. “How can we be sure that if I ask for her help this time around, she will assist?”Despite his best efforts, Mark had been unable to find a job. It was as if the universe was conspiring against him. R

This time as he picked up the call, he knew the voice just when he said,“Hey, Brother-in-law.”It was his brother-in-law, Edward Feathering, Felicia’s brother, on the line. Mark's heart sank, knowing that Edward took great pleasure in mocking him."Well, well, well. If it isn't the poor little orphan," Edward sneered. "What has it been, Mark? A year since you married our precious Felicia Feathering? And still, you can't even provide for her properly. I’ve heard the news, she’s pregnant."Mark clenched his jaw, biting back a retort. He knew Edward was only trying to provoke him. This was becoming a norm and he couldn’t keep up with it."You're a disgrace to our family, Mark. And if Felicia, my sister is still married to you by tomorrow, she and her baby will be disowned for good. You hear me? Our family will cut them off completely."It had been that when Felicia tried to connect with Mark about her pregnancy and he didn’t r

His adrenaline surged as he lunged for cover behind a rusted cargo container, the red laser sights from the rooftop snipers dancing across the fog.Nathan Cross kept his weapon trained on Edward, his voice sharp. “Stand down, Edward! This doesn’t have to end like this.”Edward’s laugh was hollow, tinged with pain as he straightened. “Oh, but it does. And you know it.” He waved his uninjured hand, signaling his men. The snipers shifted positions, taking aim.Mark growled, voice cutting through the tension. “You’re out of your mind, Edward! Felicia isn’t even here! He has to be. If he really had Felicia, he’d have made his move already.”Mark’s head snapped up, his eyes wild. “What if he’s waiting for me to break? What if—”Julian interrupted, voice grim. “No. He’s playing you. Trust me, I know how Edward operates. If he had Felicia, we’d have seen proof. Real proof. The tinted window rolled down halfway, revealing the sharp, calculating eyes of Julian Cross—the same man who had played him at the pier.
