Chapter 11 Nothing Personal, Just Business

Mark was about to continue walking when he thought better of what to do.

Miss Vasconcelos would probably be busy with Manager Curtis now, so he could stop by the office later.

So, he decided to go first to the janitors' room to gather his things before resigning.

As he spun on his heels, he realized with exasperation that Mary Ellen was still at the door of her office.

"Forget it."

"Forget what?" Mark frowned.

"Her. Forget her. She's not for you." Mary Ellen grinned wickedly.

"Don't you have anything better to do, Mary Ellen?" Mark crossed his arms.

He swore that Mary Ellen would be the first on the list to be fired!

"Well, since you did me the favor of making me lose my day's pay, I have no motivation to work anymore." Mary Ellen mocked.

"So get ready to clean, mop floors, disinfect sinks, and unclog toilets." Mark shook his head.

"Why? You won't be around anymore to do that charity work for us?" Mary Ellen chuckled strangely, as if she suffered from bronchitis, "You really believed you could change your life and get rich just because that ugly lady told you so?"

"One thing I know: I won't get rich wasting my time here," Mark said this and didn't even wait for Mary Ellen to retort.

"You..." Losing the reason to loaf around, Mary Ellen 'forced' herself to work.

Mark entered the janitors' room and started gathering his things.

There was no one else in the room. His coworkers must be busy with their respective tasks on their floors of the building.

Of all people, they had to choose him to trample on and humiliate.

Thinking that all of this would end, Mark smiled in relief.

After collecting his belongings, Mark headed to Anthony Curtis's office.

The very same corridor where moments ago chaos reigned, now, was in total silence. Yes, recess was over. And difficult time too.

However, it seems that fate had something else in store for Mark.

When he stopped at the door of Mr. Curtis's office, he felt that something was different.

The door that should be closed, wasn't. When he gently touched it to see if he could enter, it slowly opened a crack.

The crack in the door, however, was enough for Mark to see what was happening inside.

His anger surged, and his eyes instantly became as sharp as knives.

What was happening? He saw Briana lying helplessly on the chair while Anthony Curtis nearly poured himself over her.

"Miss Vasconcelos, I must admit my friend didn't lie about you. You look very hot, even in this formal attire!"

Mark frowned. Such disrespect!

Mark opened the office door a bit more, expecting to remind Anthony Curtis of a new visitor.

However, maybe Anthony Curtis was too focused on Briana, he didn’t take notice of Mark at all.

From where Mark could see, Briana was “paralyzed” in her chair, but her body expressed apathy and internal conflict. As if Briana wanted to do something about Curtis's rudeness, but she couldn't.

"You... what... do you mean..."

"Ha, ha, ha!" Curtis's evil laugh echoed through the office, "Don't worry, my dear. As soon as you meet my very important friend, he will take good care of you!

"I just feel sorry that I have to put something in your coffee for him to do so. I know you only came here for another business collaboration. But don't be upset, it's just part of life!"

Mark clenched his fists in anger. So that's it!

How could Manager Curtis be so shameless and sleazy as to drug a woman?

And who would this 'very important friend' be?

"Okay, enough chit-chat. You sure took your time to show up, you were a few minutes late. That's why we have to hurry. My friend is eagerly waiting for you!"

Mark knew Briana 'was late' because she was defending his honor downstairs.

She helped him, now she needs help!

Mark couldn't let someone like Anthony Curtis get away with this!

Without thinking further, as Anthony was leaning over Briana to grab her by the arms, Mark gathered momentum and kicked the office door.
