Death is Mercy

It almost felt as if the world was ending right before his very eyes. For some reason, he thought he had forgotten how to read and that maybe he had read it wrong.

A divorce? Why? Why would she want to divorce him after three years just like that?

“What… what is this?” His eyes lingered on the content of the paper in his hand as he asked her.

“Don't you know how to read? What does it say on the paper?” She crossed her arms below her breast as she asked. Her brow arched.

“It says… it says divorce.” He responded, feeling stupidly confused.

“Exactly, that is exactly what I want from you. I don't want the stupid purse or bag or whatever you got me, I don't need your love as well. Just sign the damn papers and get out of my life.” Lilly heartlessly said with a stern expression on her face.

“No, no, you can't leave me like this, why would you even think of doing this to me? After three years of patiently waiting for you to come to me, what comes to you is to dump me like this?” He didn't know where the strength was coming from, maybe it was the anger that fueled him as he brought himself to his feet. “This is bullshit!”

“You are bullshit!” Lilly spat out with eyes and nostrils flared. “Who the hell do you think you are?”

“I won't… I won't sign this. You cheat on me and then this? No, I won't sign this! It's pure bullshit!” He yelled in her face as he slammed the paper on the floor.

Lilly signaled to the security men in the room and they immediately ceased Ryan by the arm.

“What the… what is this?” He asked as he tried to break free from the strong men's grip.

“Will you sign the papers or not?” she arched her brow as she asked him.

“I won't sign them. Lilly, I love you, I– I really really do love you and I'm being honest. I… don't mind this affair and I can forgive you as well.”

Lilly broke into a sinister laugh and she wasn't the only one. Her family chorused her laugh, all mocking him with their hateful eyes and laughs.

Kelly swayed her hips as she walked towards him. In a fit of rage, she sent her palm across his face “What an insult!” She snapped. “Forgive who? Are you in any position to even say that? You should be begging for our forgiveness.”

He spat out blood as she slapped him again. “Kelly please, I beg you.”

“Oh shut up! Stop giving yourself such a hard time and just sign the damn papers! Not that I pity you, it would be you doing me a favor to rid the earth of yourself.”

Lilly sat cross legged on the bed and folded her arms. “I have no time for this. Make him sign the papers.” She said with a sinister smile.

One of the buff men nodded his head and Kelly moved out of the way. He stopped in front of Ryan with a smirk.

Like he already knew what was coming, Ryan began to struggle to break free from their hold but he was too weak for all of them.

Kicks and punches landed on him till he bled and almost fell unconscious. With busted lips and broken bleeding nose and broken skin, Ryan finally gave in to their wishes and signed the divorce papers.

All through the merciless beating, he could hear their roars of mocking laughs and to his surprise, Lilly was recording the whole thing.

“I'm going to post this on I*******m, it is so going to get millions of likes.” She said before bursting into laughter once more.

He didn't understand why he chose to withstand all the pain refusing to divorce even though his wife was the one in the wrong. Love sometimes made people do unbelievable things.

“I would have offered to pay your alimony,” Lilly started as she rose from the bed. “But I know your pride won't let you take it from me which is a bad thing because you'll die of starvation. Get him out of here.”

The buff men nodded and roughed handled Ryan as they dragged him out of the room.

Ryan winced as the sound of high pitched ringing and mocking laughter filled his ear, giving him a bad migraine.

They threw him out of the house and one of them spat at his direction before slamming the door shut.

Weak and breathless, Ryan lifted himself up with a grunt and glared at the house before dragging himself away.

Walking down the cold, dark and empty road, Ryan thought about his life, he couldn't help but to wonder why he could never be lucky for once in his life.

Life had been nothing but hard for him right from when he grew up at the orphanage. Nobody wanted him and he didn't have any friends.

He suffered all through his teenage years trying to fend for himself and the suffering still hadn't ended. He thought that love would heal him but alas he was wrong.

What was the use of his existence if he was just going to suffer from birth to death?

A bike raced out of nowhere and swept him off his feet. Ryan fell to the ground with a grunt as his life flashed before his eyes.

His vision had immediately turned blurry and a silhouette of a man stood next to him, shaking him. “Are you okay?” He heard the muffled voice of the person but was unable to reply.

Hot tears spilled from his eyes and rolled down his cheek as he laid almost lifeless on the cold hard ground.

He couldn't help but to think. ‘Maybe it is for the best, the world has been nothing but unfair to me anyway. Death is mercy.’
