Double Trouble

The Academy of Sciences was the last place Steven Gold wanted to find himself at. But here he was, explaining to his lecturers why he skipped school for a month. They understood his sister's situation and allowed him off the hook.

“Hey!” his close friend Jeremy greeted, sitting beside him.

“How are you?” Steven asked.

“I am getting myself back together. He was buried last week.”

Steven’s heart sank.

“Your father was a good man.”

“Yeah, he was. I wish I know who killed him.”

Steven felt like a monster. He couldn't tell him his mafia father killed him. The Black Draculas killed him! The poor boy didn’t know how vulnerable his father was. Who owes the Mafia millions?

“Since your father is a Mafia, could you help me find the killers?”

Jeremy trusted him that much.

“I do not get involved in my dad’s business.”

“Come on! It is just the connection I need.”

“I promise you do not want to get involved.”

The door opened and a beautiful lady walked in swaying her hips. She blew a kiss at Steven, before sitting on the course rep’s lap. The course rep’s name was Ryan.

“Speaking of your ex, Sharon….”

“I do not want to talk about her.”

“She looks hotter than ever. Is Ryan doing the job, my guy?!”

Steven was irked.

“She cheated on me, dude.”

“Still! She looks better than when she was with you.”

“That makes me feel better, thank you very much.”

Steven couldn't imagine his biography. Best friends with a boy whose father was killed by his own father. He was still a virgin and refused to be laid. All the boys thought he was incompetent in bed. Sharon wouldn’t stop spreading rumors.

Steven groaned.

Why does college have to be so hard?

“How was college?” His sister asked, noticing his frustrated look when he came back home.

“They think I am incompetent.”

He wasn’t sure if it was a good idea to share it with his sister. But he needed to tell someone. And she was the only one who knew him.

“Incompetent how?”

He bit his lips in disappointment. He thought she would grasp fast.

“Forget it!”

“You saw that prostitute again, right?” Mary got the hint..

“Do not call her that.”

Stupid him! Why did he defend Sharon? That lady wasn’t worth it at all. She laid with a lot of boys in his class, and left him as a mere puppet.

“You still love her. Remove that feeling from your heart.”

“I do not!”

“Please release that feeling.”

I wish I can.

Sharon was beautiful. She had nice hips and long blonde hair. Her scent was enticing. How can he get over such charms?

“She is a bitch! You do not want a bitch.”

“Will you stop judging?”

“And will stop being a dweeb? She isn’t worth it.”

Their father walked in interrupting them with his hoarse voice.

“Who has fallen in love?” He insensitively hung a cigar on his lips. Mary was asthmatic and couldn’t hang around smokes

“Dad! You cannot smoke here!” Steven hurried to push him out.

“Fine! Fine!” His father gave up the cigar. “Tell me who this girl is.”

“No one.”

“It’s Steven’s ex.” Mary ruined the moment. Steven eyed her, gesturing for her to stop talking, but she wouldn’t listen. She went on talking, enjoying his pain. “She thinks he is impotent because he is a virgin.”

“Impotent?!” This astonished his father.”My son cannot be boring. No lady should walk over him like that.”

“Dad, I didn’t ask for your opinion.” Steven hissed.

“You are weaker than I thought,” his dad was ashamed of him. “You are not my son. My son will never let a lady walk over him like this.”

“No one walked over me. I chose to be a virgin.”

“That's way worse! She will ridicule you till you die and no girl will respect you. You will never get married.”

Mary frowned.

“Dad, you are taking things too far,”

“O! Let me speak, Mary. He has to learn how to be a man. He cannot go around telling everyone he is a virgin.”

“Let him be, father. It is his body. He can do what he wants.”

“Wow! I feel very insulted. My son cannot flirt, or talk to a woman. He can’t even lie with a woman.”

“Enough Dad!” Mary shouted with all her strength. She fell weak and struggled to breathe. Steven hurriedly gave her her inhaler .

“If anything happens to her, it is your fault.” His father blamed him.

“I hate that man,” Steven confessed.

“He is still our father. Do not let his words get into your head.”

“You think it is easy to put up with him?”

“It isn't. He almost smoked in my room.”

Steven hugged her.

“We shouldn’t have come here. I loved carrying boxes.”

“I would rather see you in a suit working in an office. Don’t you think you deserve that.”

“I don’t know.”

“Three more years.”

“Please, Mary. Do not remind me!”

“Three more years, you will be an office man.”

“O! Please!”

He laughed.

“Hey, sexy!” Steven heard Sharon’s voice as he walked out of the gym.

The demon!

It’s been two weeks! Two weeks since he thought of her. What does she want?

He ignored it and increased his pace.

“Steven, wait!” she raced after him.

He increased his pace more.

“Steven!” She caught up with him and pulled his arm. “Stop making me run like this. You haven’t changed, have you?”

“What do you want?”

“I want us to talk.”

He knew she didn't have anything sensible to say, but he stopped anyway.

“We are not getting back together,” he made it clear.

“Never!” She denied. “That’s not why I am here.”

He felt better.

“Okay then. What do you want?”

She was reluctant to speak at first. Her hands fidgeted as it always does when she is anxious.

“Are you fine?”

He was concerned.

“There was a shootout at my street yesterday. I am scared of staying alone.”

Steven sensed her tricks.

“I cannot help you.”

He turned to leave but she grabbed his arm again. He pulled back.

“What’s wrong with you, Sharon? Let go of me!”

“Sorry, sorry.” She apologized.

He hissed.

“I forgot you hate to be touched.”

He gave her a stern look.

“But you can do it, Steven. You can protect me. Your father is a mafia, isn’t he?”

“So?”

“So you are brave. You should be able to help me.”

Steven was caught in a trap. Despite his hatred for his dad’s job, the temptation was strong. The temptation to look brave as his father. He couldn't coward out.

“Ryan?”

“He isn’t as brave as you are.”

Steven cursed himself. Would he fall for this? Sharon proved him weak many times. He can't keep encouraging that.

“Okay,” he agreed. “I will come to your place tonight.”

She screeched and hugged him.

“Thanks!”

“But, do not try anything stupid. I am only there to watch you for the night.”

“I will never. Ryan will be on my Facetime the whole time.”

“Good then.”

Later in the evening, Steven stood before Sharon's door. He knocked, with his other hand in his pocket. It’s been forever since he came to her place. Their breakup traumatized him. She moved on easily, while he watched her twerk on other guys lap.

“Steven is weak. He cannot perform.” She told them to his face.

He hated the girl so much. Why was he even helping her?! That made no sense.

“Hi,” she greeted as she allowed him in.

“Your neighborhood is peaceful.” He looked for an excuse to leave.

“It happened at 10 pm. We cannot be so sure.”

Steven rolled his eyes and sat on her couch. He remembered she shared the apartment with a roommate and looked around for her.

“Where is Evelyn?”

“O! She…I…”

Steven arched his brows.

“She will be staying at her boyfriend’s place for tonight.”

“So we are alone?”

She nodded happily.

“I promise not to do anything. It’s fine.”

Steven looked away from her.

“Want some chocolate?” She asked unwrapping a ball of chocolate.

Was she trying to seduce him?

“No thanks.”

She let him be and entered her room.

Bad idea Steve! Bad idea! He said to himself as he lay on her couch. He was alert, ready to flee if Sharon did anything stupid. She didn't.

Twilight came fast and his eyes shut slowly to sleep. Sharon’s neighborhood was very quiet. A bit too quiet. As he drifted to sleep, he felt an arm crawl up his legs.
