I'm jolted awake by the sharp pain in chest. I turn on my side, coughing and heaving. The pain subsides in a few minutes and a tab appears in front of me.
“Good morning, host” Spix says. “Your health vitals are stable. Unfortunately, they will deteriorate over time as the system battles to correct errors.“ “You're doing this?“ I ask Spix placing a hand over my chest.“It is my duty to assist the player. Hence, i must eradicate every trace of energy belonging to System Ayra in your body” “Are you saying that I'm not a host?““Based on last night's events, the error has been successfully detected. You came to Eden Bizarre as a player however, a rogue system has taken residence in your body. You have become her host. Her energy cannot contrast with yours because you have none. However, if you level up as a player both energy will fight each other as hosts and players are on opposite ends until they terminate each other. If you wish to level up as a player then you must forfeit the bond with Ayra” Spix says. “But if i do that, I'll be vulnerable. This chamber is filled with predators. I've only survived because of Ayra's system powers” I say rising to my feet. “I will try to expell the reminant energy so please endure the pain and refrain from using Ayra's system powers, level up as a player and rely on mine” She tells me and the tab disappears. The sharp pain resumes but the sound of someone hurling in the bushes keeps me from attending to it. Spix said the soul system in Eden Bizarre is constantly working to erase errors. If Kara is a system error, that means the system is trying to erase her as well. I run towards the sound, ignoring the stabbing pain in my chest. As i suspected, Kara is clutching on to her chest and crying out in pain. “Are you alright?“ I ask.“Yeah I'm fine” she answers, standing up straight immediately. I don't miss the blood stains on her cheek when she she turns away. “You don't look fine” Kara doesn't respond. She starts walking away instead. “Don't come after me”I don't. I sit by the rocks watching the sea waves, Dante's fortress doesn't seem as close to the shores as it did last night. I think of my current situation and host system Ayra. Is Ayra really inside my head? How do i find her and escape the system then? I try to call for her but she doesn't answer. Then i think of my player system, Spix. She sounded different today. Yesterday she had spoken to me like she was a robot. Today, she sounded…real. I'm almost on the verge of going down the dreaded memory lanes of my previous life when i hear approaching footsteps. “Let's go” Kara says.“Where?““The lobby”“What's the Lobby?“ I ask after we've walked for hours. “The safest place for soul players. Hosts can't enter. It's in the lower chamber. There's someone i have to meet before we go to the capital” Kara replies. She looks up ahead and i watch a smile spread across her face. I look up to see what she's looking at. There's a giant arc in the middle of road with runes and symbols drawn all over it. “Arcs are how we transport to different chambers.“ We walk to the threshold and Kara walks through it and disappears through the portal. I take a deep breath. “Once you walk in there, you will become part of the soul system. A player and a host. This is where your journey through Eden Bizarre will officially begin. Are you ready?“ Spix asks. I watch portal knowing Kara is probably waiting for me on the other side. It's not like i could go back. I needed to find Ayra and get the hell out of this system. With that final thought, i step into the portal. Kara grabs my arm and pulls me all the way through. I trip over my feet and we both fall to the ground. She pushes me off her and i scramble to get on my feet. “Don't ever do that again” she tries to glare at me but her face is too flushed to pose a threat. I turn away from her and i take in my surroundings. It's a marketplace, packed with people running around and yelling for items to be sold and exchanged. No one pays us any attention as they go on about their daily business. I'm not sure what i was expecting but it wasn't this. “Come on” She says, brushing past the crowd. We push our way through and i can't help but stare. Every little thing catches my attention. They sell the most absurd things like sea spider venom and a map that sees all of Eden Bizarre. A few salesmen tug on my shirt to purchase a few things in exchange for an amount of my energy. It's all so mesmerising. “How does all of this exist here?“ I ask, running to catch up with Kara.“Soul energy levels determine how much success a soul will have in their next life. People in this chamber are called Dwellers. The weaker players who cannot participate in tournaments or level up. They'll sell anything for a few energy points so they can have a good future. You should consider it” she scoffs. “You think?“ I actually am.“Business is tough here. It will take you 300 years to gather up enough energy to be reborn not to speak of being reborn rich.“ She looks at me to watch my face shift to disappointment. “Wait so these people—”“Have been here for much longer than you think. And we're going to meet one of the oldest.“ She says as she pushes open the door to a shop. The bell jingles announcing our arrival as we walk in. My eyes soak in the shop. It's a pawn shop with lots of artifacts and paintings. A clock ticks in an odd manner going in all possible directions at once. I move to get a closer look but a stick pokes out in front of me. “Don't touch that unless you wish to lose the next 500 years of your lifetime. A soul can only live so long” I turn to see an old man with a walking stick and a long white beard. He reminds me of the overly exaggerated wizards i saw once on TV. “OZ!“ Kara pops out from behind a shelf and the old man's face lights up at the sight of her. “Kara. It's good to see you again!“ He says as he embraces her.“You change companions like clothes. Where's Darach?“ He asks and Kara's expression sinks. “Axel… that bastard” she croaks but Oz doesn't let her finish her statement before he hugs her again. “Now, who is this curious fellow?“ Oz asks when they finally part from each other. This must be the old soul that she spoke of earlier. I should probably pay my respects. He looks ancient. “You must be the soul Kara spoke of. I am Knox, her temporary companion. It's an honor to meet one of the oldest souls in the system” i say with a low head bow. When i look up, Oz and Kara are staring at me in surprise. They both burst into laughter and i wonder if I've told a bad joke then it hits me. “Is he not—”“The oldest soul in the system? No. That would be me” A voice says from behind me. I turn to see a young boy around my age standing on the stairs. He has white hair like mine but there are streaks of blue in it. He's wearing a cape like the one Ravena had but it's white and blue. A tab appears over his head and my jaw almost drops at his immense energy level. Name: ReidPower: illusionsLethal move: Hidden dreamsEnergy level: 999 Who the hell is this guy?“Meet Reid, he's the reason the lobby is the way it is.““Here, have some. I brewed it myself” Oz says as he pours me a cup of tea, which he swears replenishes energy so i don't turn it down. I can feel Reid's eyes watching my every move as we sit down to drink. It's uncomfortable, but i don't comment about it. “I'm really sorry for thinking you were the old soul, Kara spoke of” I apologise to Oz again. “I just didn't think he'd look so young” “Ah it's alright. It happens all the time. Just drink up.“ Oz says.“Reid doesn't go out often, so everyone assumes Oz is the leader of the blue lotus house” Kara says, taking a sip from her tea. “White lotus house?“ I ask.“Remember when i said, join a crew. This is what i was talking about.“ She gestures at the whole house. “The other members are out and about, but the white lotus is the oldest party in Eden Bizarre. We fight together, and everyone has their own role to play” Reid finishes. “You're the oldest soul in the system and you have more than enough power to keep the hosts out of t
I turn to Kara to explain but she's just staring blankly at me. “Him? That's impossible. He's weak” She analyses the look on my face and i see conflict in her eyes when she turns to What do you mean?“ Kara asks, holding up a honey biscuit to her mouth. “Knox. He's a host. A really dangerous one at that. I don't know how he can hide his status from everyone but my powers allows me to see it” Reid says and i could almost stab in him in the heart. “Knox, is he telling the truth?“ Kara asks me and i want to lie but I can't bring myself to do it. She sees the answer to her question and the honey biscuit drops to the floor. She rises to her feet and the feeling of betrayal sets in. “No. Kara listen, i can explain. I wanted to tell you but—” “You hosts are just full of shit. Hiding your powers and pretending to be weak so you could wait for the perfect moment to kill me. Just to get a reward?“ Her eyes begin to glow and i see energy spiraling around her hands. I fall o
Knox Our walk through the lobby is quiet except for the sound of Dwellers trying to sell theor strange items. I did find a few things that could be of use to me but the weighing cloud of sudden depression did not allow me to purchase anything with my points despite Spix's constant advice to use them because there was a possibility that i could need them in the forseeable future. I give in eventually and settle for a sword that stores energy when the store owner practically dragged us into his store. Kara walks out of the store carrying a bag full of accessories. “You have a lot of money to spend” i say sarcastically, informing her that she could go broke if she didn't stop purchasing everything in sight. Her inventory was already full, so she had to purchase a bag.“I don't need to earn money. I have more than enough to last me a life time” She answers. I raised a brow in confusion, but i don't question it because I was already in too much of a bad mood to care. Every
“What the hell were you thinking?“ She asks me when i can finally breathe properly. “Where are we?“ I ask, ignoring her question. “The capital” She replies. I rise to my feet to look at my surroundings and my jaw almosst drops at the sight of the giant birds flying in the sky, a city spreads beneath our feet and once again, it feels like we have entered a different world. I see sparks of light and energy burst up to the sky in multiple colors. It's beautiful. “It's as beautiful as it is deadly so be on your toes and don't go wandering off. Killing people isn't only a host's job. The Souls here are corrupt and ready to kill for more power so try not to get on anyone's nerves” She smacks. Her gaze is cold when she looks at me which oddly makes me feel more comfortable than when she spoke nicely to me at the lotus house. I nod in agreement. After what just happened, I'm not sure if i wanted to part ways with Kara just yet. She saved my life. I tighten my grip around
[Warning: Level 10 host detected]“You have to get out of there.” Spix says.“That's me” i reply in shock as my other self advances towards me. The sword in his hand is different from mine. It looks a lot like the one i had while fighting the water siren. “It's the host version of you. Right now, you are only a soul player with a player's system. That is what you will become if you let Ayra's system consume you. Filled with nothing but the greed to destroy and oppress every soul playe—” Spix is cut off by the loud blast that is sent my way. I dodge it by rolling away. The energy blast doesn't crash into anything. It only disappears into the void of darkness. My host self glares at me with glowing bloodshot eyes as he draws out more energy. He walks towards me in a slow and robotic manner before firing another blast. I narrowly escape the blast, and I charge for him with my sword. He blocks the attack and counters, cutting through the skin on my arm. I fall back, groaning i
TW: BLOOD & GORE “THE RULES ARE SIMPLE!“ Dante shouts and the whole amphitheatre falls into silence. “Only 10 of you will make it to the next chamber. These gems are the key. You must catch it and return to its base on the other side of the capital. Hosts are not allowed to play. We are only here to guide you” he slurs on the word “guide”. “Eliminate as many players and crush your opponents. After the 10 gems are returned. The rest of you will be eliminated” Cane adds with a grin on his face. Hosts, you know what to do. Players, you know what to do. Let's not waste anymore time. LET THE GAMES BEGIN!“ He rushes through his word like he's already bored and ready for some action. A loud horn blows and Kara leaps into the air grabbing a gem and running out the gates. The other nine are taken swiftly. I notice Axel speeds past with Ravena with two gems in his hand. The ring is empty in seconds and we all turn to the large screen. The hosts walk out, following the soul players. A
“What…The… F**k?!“ I hear Dante say. “That's the highest level host. If we kill him, the game ends!“ Someone yells. WHAT? I DID NOT KNOW THAT!“Give in to me and Let me handle this, okay? You just sit back and let me take control“ The beserk system says in a soothing voice. I feel compelled to let go of control and give in. I close my eyes and it feels like I'm floating. I'm no longer in control of my body. Reid's word hit me like a bomb. I can't give in. “No! I just want to save Kara.“ I say, struggling to gain control of my body but the system is already too strong and infesting every part of my body. “I'm starving, Knox. Let me feed on their energies. I'll save the girl.” The system says. The host sword glows and i charge for Cane, he raises his sword to protect himself but my sword cut clean through it. I wrap a hand around his throat and i lift him into the air, the sword charges with energy and i try to fight it. “Stop! Stop!“ I shout internally but the system i
MEANWHILE AT THE 51ST CHAMBER…Ravena drags Axel through the court of the Elvil house with his arm slung over her shoulder. No one bothers to stop them but she keeps to the shadows to avoid the watchful eyes of the hosts who have already been put in a bad mood. The whole of the capital is in tension as Cane has incinerated almost twelve people in the space of two hours. She sets him down in a storage room and charges up her energy to heal him. “I failed you…” Axel says. “I should go after him. I—”“Save your strength. You can't win against him. I knew that power was familiar. It's Ayra. The 100th chamber rogue system. She's in Knox's body” She says, chipping away at her fingernails. “Ayra?“ Axel asks in shock, struggling to sit up in an upright position. “I don't know how it happened but we have to after them if we want to find a way to talk to my father.“ Ravena starts pacing around the room. Axel grabs her arm before she moves again. “Don't tell me you still
