“What…are you talking about?” Nakamura uttered those words so feebly that it was equal to not speaking as well.

She, like a mechanical robot, slowly turned her head towards her dad.

“Dad, what is he talking about?” She asked but Tatsuya didn’t respond and just cast his head down.

She then looked at my mom sitting across from her.

“Hitomi-san? Tell me that it’s a lie.” She didn’t speak as well. Just like Tatsuya, she had her head cast down.

Nakamura was panicking as time passed.

“Hey. Why are you two silent? Answer me!” Nakamura screamed and begged the two adults to speak. But, no. They didn’t speak. They couldn’t. For what I told was nothing but plain truth.

A dark shadow started forming on Nakamura’s face as even after five minutes had passed the two of them hadn’t said anything. No retort. Not a single word. Their faces were paling. It was turning white. Deathly so.

I gripped the small glass with a cold drink in it and gulped its content in one go.

With a small thud, I placed the gl

After making sure that the three of them had gone from the small opening in the window, I stepped out.The middle-aged man along with some young staff was standing there wide-eyed.“Um…what just happened…?”“Ah, nothing. Just a small quarrel.”They didn’t look convinced. One of the female employees looked over my shoulder to our booth where things were a bit messy. Chunks of wood had come off and drinks and food were sprawled on the table and on the floor. It was easy to guess that what had happened was not a small quarrel by any stretch.“Sorry for this ruckus. And don’t worry, I will pay for the loss.” I tried to comfort them with a smile on my face.“You have an online payment system here?” I asked. The female employee who had been looking at the scene turned her attention to me and answered. “Ah, yes.”She led me to the counter and I paid 50,000 yen as compensation. She tried to argue that the amount was more than required.“Think of it as extra payment for disturbing the atmosphe

We were in the dining area having our last breakfast in this luxurious hotel. With me were Yamamoto and some other students from our class. Over the course of one week, I would say we have gotten close enough to be called acquaintances.“So my dream is to become a pilot.” Said Kei with dreamy eyes.We were currently talking about our future dreams. Hattori had said that he wanted to become an astronomer. We were going in turns and I knew the baton was going to be passed on to me soon after Yamamoto’s turn.“What about you, Kageyama?” Asked Kei. I was surprised. Wasn’t it supposed to be Yamamoto’s turn!? I screamed internally but the baton was now in my hands so I had to answer.I gave it some thought. Future dreams, eh? I haven’t thought of anything of sorts. I didn’t want to become a doctor nor a pilot or an engineer. I had no dreams and no ambitions. I didn’t need to, after all. But there was one thing that I want. Maybe that might count as a dream. Since I had nothing else to say,

“…Aina?”Spurred on by my words, she turned her head towards me.Upon seeing me, I caught that her eyes had widened ever so slightly.I walked towards my door.“What are you doing here?”“I was waiting for you.”Hmm? The way she is speaking is somewhat unusual. It is somewhat similar to the voice she had that night when she came knocking at my door saying that she wanted to learn more about me.“Why? You want to know more about me? About my past?”“Although that is a part of it, that’s not completely it.”So that was one of her goals but not all? That meant she had something else in store. I could only have an ominous premonition.“And what might that be?” I asked, a bit wary. She slowly closed her eyes.“Hmph!”Then her eyes shot open suddenly. She took a quick and heavy step toward me, grabbed me by my shoulders, and inched closer. What? Is she going to kiss me!?That was the first thought that crossed my mind but it turned out that I was wrong. Unfortunately, so.She brought her li

  • How My Life Was Ruined   090: Shackles

I was in my room. The windows were open. Outside, the rain had started getting heavier by the moment. Occasional winds hit the windows hard causing them to produce a creaking sound as they vibrated. Trinkets of rain made their way inside the room and made contact with my face after which they disappeared to nowhere. The rain that formed after so many efforts and processes for a long time disappeared so easily that it reminded me of a flame in a candle; extinguished with a single puff of breath. It reminded me of how fragile life can be and how easily and effortlessly a life can be ruined despite the painstaking efforts that led to that life.A mechanical ringing sound reached my ears and I turned around to face the small speaker-like device attached to the wall above the door. An announcement was about to be made.“To all the students, due to heavy rain and bad weather conditions, the roads have been blocked and declared unsafe for use. Thus, traveling back home is not possible under

If you are reading this afterword instead of reading the story, then, please go and read the story first! However, if you are here after following the gruesome journey and the end of Kageyama Kage, then, I have to thank you from the bottom of my heart to have given this novel a chance. Now, then, about this story. You know, we humans, are contradictory in nature. In the little things we do and speak, there is always a small contradiction there. We might fail to notice them, but it doesn't mean we don't contradict ourselves. Similarly, we humans, also go through our fair share of hardships and pain. It is inevitable. I have had my fair share of them and you all have too. This story, 'How My Life Was Ruined', is a story where the contradiction is exaggerated - no - overexaggerated and at the same time, I (being the overthinker I am) took the various problems people around me faced and converted it into a story. A story where we don't see a redemption arc. A story where all that await

“Finally.”I muttered as I stood on the edge of the rooftop holding hands with Hayami. The cold wind ruffled our hairs.I was battered. Bruise covered my body here and there and there was also a gun wound on my lower leg. Hayami had ripped her skirt to tie it around my leg to prevent blood loss. Although I found it hilarious that she was trying to prevent the blood loss of someone who was going to die soon, I didn’t speak a word and let her do her work.“We can finally die.”Although I had wanted to go in a grand way, this was good in its own way. I went back and sat down on my earlier seat.My mom came out of the bathroom after a few minutes. Her face was wet. She probably washed her face so that she could hide the fact that she was crying. But her red eyes gave it away. The pain was still there in her face.I handed her the towel lying on the sofa. She dried her face with that and shortly after the old hag came in.I took out my phone and started scrolling through the feed on social media. Though I was still paying keen attention to the old hag.Hmm.Just then I noticed the two of them make eye contact. It was nothing unusual but it definitely caught my attention. The time was 3 in the morning. I ended up staying awake all night today.“Furukawa-san, why don’t you stay till morning? For the next five minutes after my mom dashed to the bathroom, no one spoke. I feel like these long and short stretches of silence in the middle of conversations were happening a lot to me. Was it a meaningful silence or a meaningless one? Did the silence speak louder than the words or was it just and merely silence? I don’t know.“She sure is taking long. What must she be doing?” The old hag broke the silence with a meaningful question.“Yeah, I wonder what.”Although I knew what she wanted to hear from me, I played the fool. I knew what she was doing in the bathroom. She was without a doubt crying her eyes out hurt by the scathing words of her own son.The old hag gave me a smile as if she had seen that coming.“Putting aside your words that you being born itself was the root of it all, don’t you feel angry?”“Angry? Why?”“If you hadn’t learned what your mom had been doing, things wouldn’t have gone that out of hand. Let’s say if your mom hadn’t been cheating on your dad, if Nakamu

After hearing the click of the door locking, I made my way downstairs and sat in an empty chair facing the old hag.“Why are you here?” I asked.“We heard from Aina's parents that she had run away from home and would like our help to search for her. That’s why I am here.”So I was right that she had run away from home without telling anyone.“But, why are you here? How did you know Aina would be here?” Did she know beforehand that the only place Aina will head to after running from her home under the current circumstances will be my house?
