How My Life Was Ruined End of Volume 2
This here brings an end to the second arc of the series 'Fakeness and Family'. This volume was sort of a bridging arc. At first, I had planned this volume to be the same length as the first one but when I continued writing it become far longer than I had originally planned. In this volume, some light was shed on the fakeness that our protagonist had and the complicated family relationship he has. But, we still don't know the full story yet. There are many things we have yet to know. Why exactly does Kageyama hate his mother so much? Why did his father die and why does he blame himself for his father's death? What is the sin he speaks of? And more importantly, who is this girl - Hayami? And why did Kaya refer to her as non-existent? There is something even more pressing here. What will happen afterward? All of these will be answered in the next volume which will be the final installment of this series. And sorry but, I think you guys will have to wait till next month for all t

I looked her straight in the eyes and replied in all honesty. “I am sorry, Hamasaki.” For a moment, her mouth opened a little then she closed it tight. Her thin glossy lips then went on to form a thin smile. A smile that said that she knew this was coming. Her hands were clasped tightly in front of her and all she could do was look on at me with her loving gaze. But, I didn’t avert her gaze and looked straight at her. This was the least I could do to respect the determination and courage she showed despite knowing the end result. A strong wind blew, and her long hair was sent flying in the air, blocking her face. She turned around and then she ran. Although her face was hidden by her long, lustrous hair, I was sure I had seen it. A drop of tears that contained a thousand painful emotions. “I wonder how many times has it been now?” I said as I looked up at the sky with my expression blank. Maybe eighteen? No. It should have already crossed twenty by now. Twenty. The number o

A man in his early forties came wobbling through the front door.He hastily opened his shoes and threw them toward the wall. They bounced off the wall and fell on the floor upside down. He put his right hand on the wall as he supported himself as he walked.I was still there rooted at the end of the steps. His footsteps were loud and heavy. I hated this man. And of course, I hate to talk to him. But if I don’t talk here, the loud thumping will continue and this is for sure going to wake my mom up. She was tired and she needs rest. For the sake of her respite, unwillingly, I spoke to the drunk man from the spot I was in.“Hey, pipe it down, old man. You will end up waking mom up.”Upon hearing my harsh words delivered in a cold tone, my drunk father slowly looked up at me with his swollen, red eyes.“Oh, my son.”When he said that, I could feel blood rush to my head at an unbelievable speed. Hearing him speak, I felt enraged. I hated him. I hate his face. I hate his voice. I hate his e

The room was silent now that the storm had passed. My mom was still lying on the floor. Her hair was still a mess with tears staining her beautiful and lovely face.I slowly walked towards her and crouched down to gaze into her eyes that were cast down.I gently held her quivering shoulders and brought her close to mine, hugging her tightly. The quivering stopped and I heard the sound of faint sobs escaping her lips.“I am sorry.” She said.“No. Mom, why are you apologizing?”“It’s all my fault. Because of me even you have to suffer at the hands of your father. I am sorry. I am sorry, Kage!”The tears burst forth like damn and she wrapped her arms around me tightly.“No. Stop it, mom. It was not your fault. It never had been!”It was all his fault. All that bastard’s fault. She had nothing to be blamed for. It was my dad and his drinking habits that were the cause of it all. This had been a daily routine for us now. Day after day, I was made to witness the same scene again and again.
How My Life Was Ruined 101: The Past - IV
“Shit!”I said as I hurriedly jumped out of bed.Maybe it was because I had gone to sleep quite late yesterday, I wasn’t able to wake up on time. I had set three alarms at 6 o’clock, 6: 30, and 7 am. And I had – somehow – managed to miss all of it. I didn't know I had this extraordinary talent. The time currently was 7: 45.My school started at 8 o’clock sharp. That meant I had less than fifteen minutes to freshen up, get ready, have breakfast, and head to school.I ran towards the bathroom. I washed my face and brushed my teeth (well I just gave five strokes of the brush and then done) in a hurry.I went upstairs without even drying my face and put on my uniform. As I ran out of my room, I checked my mom’s room. She was still sound asleep. She must have been tired of all that happened yesterday. Without waking her up, I went back to my room.Since mom was still sleeping, that meant no breakfast was made.I had some extra money with me so I decided I will buy something at the convenie

When lunch period finally rolled over, I excused myself and went to the cafeteria.Since I hadn’t eaten a proper breakfast, I bought a heavy lunch. My plate full of all the available dishes in the school canteen, I made my way to the empty seat on the left by the window side.I immediately started wolfing down the lunch. When I finished, I was completely stuffed. Although I didn’t have my stomach sticking out, I stroked it gently.“Gosh, I don’t think I can move for a while.”I decided to stay there until the lunch period ended. As I was watching other students play on the ground through the window with my elbow on the table and chin resting on my palm, someone settled in the seat in front of me.“May I sit here?”“By all means.”Horikita-san sat on the seat with two cream-filled bread and a can of milk.Seeing that I couldn't help myself from asking.“Will just that be enough?”She immediately understood what I was getting at.“Yeah. Even this is more than I usually eat. I didn’t get

“It won’t be stopping anytime soon, will it?” I said as I looked up at the sky that seemed white now.Since I had woken up late today and didn’t have time to browse the internet or watch the television, I hadn’t been updated about the weather today. And as such, I hadn’t bought an umbrella today.Horikita-san did propose to go home together but I politely declined. Our houses were in the exact opposite direction. She had insisted that she was okay with first dropping me home and then going on her way, but I tried my best to get that idea out of her brain. It was no easy task but I had managed to convince her somehow.I put my right hand outside the classroom window and let the heavy drops of rain hit my palm. As the drops made contact with my palm, a cold sensation ran up from my arms to my heart calming and soothing it.Yeah, that’s why I love rain.No matter what I am going through, no matter what I am feeling inside when I touch the rain and when I let it seep into my body and sou

Afterword
If you are reading this afterword instead of reading the story, then, please go and read the story first! However, if you are here after following the gruesome journey and the end of Kageyama Kage, then, I have to thank you from the bottom of my heart to have given this novel a chance. Now, then, about this story. You know, we humans, are contradictory in nature. In the little things we do and speak, there is always a small contradiction there. We might fail to notice them, but it doesn't mean we don't contradict ourselves. Similarly, we humans, also go through our fair share of hardships and pain. It is inevitable. I have had my fair share of them and you all have too. This story, 'How My Life Was Ruined', is a story where the contradiction is exaggerated - no - overexaggerated and at the same time, I (being the overthinker I am) took the various problems people around me faced and converted it into a story. A story where we don't see a redemption arc. A story where all that await

“Finally.”I muttered as I stood on the edge of the rooftop holding hands with Hayami. The cold wind ruffled our hairs.I was battered. Bruise covered my body here and there and there was also a gun wound on my lower leg. Hayami had ripped her skirt to tie it around my leg to prevent blood loss. Although I found it hilarious that she was trying to prevent the blood loss of someone who was going to die soon, I didn’t speak a word and let her do her work.“We can finally die.”Although I had wanted to go in a grand way, this was good in its own way. It gave me the adrenaline rush that made my spirit pump even more.Suicide?No.Don’t term what we are about to do with something as petty and cowardly as suicide. It was the only good thing that I was going to do ever in my life. I went back and sat down on my earlier seat.My mom came out of the bathroom after a few minutes. Her face was wet. She probably washed her face so that she could hide the fact that she was crying. But her red eyes gave it away. The pain was still there in her face.I handed her the towel lying on the sofa. She dried her face with that and shortly after the old hag came in.I took out my phone and started scrolling through the feed on social media. Though I was still paying keen attention to the old hag.Hmm.Just then I noticed the two of them make eye contact. It was nothing unusual but it definitely caught my attention. The time was 3 in the morning. I ended up staying awake all night today.“Furukawa-san, why don’t you stay till morning? You probably are hungry with all the speaking and work. I will whip up something quickly and you can take a short nap to give some rest to your body till the morning.”“Hmm.” The old hag seemed to be thinking about her proposal and eventually, she

For the next five minutes after my mom dashed to the bathroom, no one spoke. I feel like these long and short stretches of silence in the middle of conversations were happening a lot to me. Was it a meaningful silence or a meaningless one? Did the silence speak louder than the words or was it just and merely silence? I don’t know.“She sure is taking long. What must she be doing?” The old hag broke the silence with a meaningful question.“Yeah, I wonder what.”Although I knew what she wanted to hear from me, I played the fool. I knew what she was doing in the bathroom. She was without a doubt crying her eyes out hurt by the scathing words of her own son.The old hag gave me a smile as if she had seen that coming.“Putting aside your words that you being born itself was the root of it all, don’t you feel angry?”“Angry? Why?”“If you hadn’t learned what your mom had been doing, things wouldn’t have gone that out of hand. Let’s say if your mom hadn’t been cheating on your dad, if Nakamu

After calming down a bit, I looked down to the dining area from the stairs. The old hag was sitting there waiting for someone. And I knew that someone was me.“Hayami, you go wait for a little longer.”“Hmm. Okay~” Although, she seemed reluctant after I gave her a kiss, she went back to the room. After hearing the click of the door locking, I made my way downstairs and sat in an empty chair facing the old hag.“Why are you here?” I asked.“We heard from Aina's parents that she had run away from home and would like our help to search for her. That’s why I am here.”So I was right that she had run away from home without telling anyone.“But, why are you here? How did you know Aina would be here?” Did she know beforehand that the only place Aina will head to after running from her home under the current circumstances will be my house? I could think of the old hag arriving to that conclusion. She was quick-witted after all.“No. We just followed her path.” She continued. “We checked the C
