The staircase was at the middle of the passage and by standing at the top of it,  Malkome and Mirajh were approximately a couple tens of meters away from Adam and that distance wasn't enough for him to accomplish what he wanted by completing the Arc.

With a massive grin on his face Malkome spoke "What ya tink you're doing boy-a" 

Adam sensed when they made it to the their floor but he hadn't made any moves until now. He quickly turned only his head when he heard Malkome's voice to see the two standing by the staircase while Malkome took his massive weapon from his shoulder and held on to it tightly, stretching it and looking like he was soon about to attack which put Adam on the defensive a bit, however, that was just a bluff as Malkome put it right back on his shoulder once again and kept it there, grinning.
