Chapter 4

The lady looked at the man, disbelief crossing her eyes, “Why? Why has he said so?” She asked, trying to get things clear.

“I don't know his reason.” The man slightly shrugged his shoulders. “Just do as instructed if you still love your job.” With this, the man stormed out again.

His conversation with the lady wasn't above a whisper which left all the applicants murmuring after he left.

The lady's mind lingered on the man's words for some moment. Why had the boss just decided to cut off the interview all of a sudden? What could be the issue? She mumbled to herself, her brown eyes rolling around.

She sighed frustratedly, torn apart. Hesitantly, she cleared her throat and drew everyone's attention to herself again. The room fell into silence again as she addressed them again with a sorry expression.

“So, sorry everyone—” she began, “my Boss just arrived at the environment and had demanded the immediate stop of this interview. I'm sorry for the inconvenience this might cause you, but I urge you all to please leave and come back some other time.” She instructed before hesitantly taking her leave immediately, leaving the tense atmosphere resolved.

Frustrated, some of the applicants began to rant, shaking their heads in disapproval at what seemed like unprofessional treatment.

This company was the biggest in town and had gained so much respect, honor, and trust in the world of business. And such a dismissive act from them was unwelcomed and unexpected.

Sighing deeply, everyone stamped their feet angrily on the ground, and with clenched hearts, they stormed out of the hall.

Meanwhile, James watched everyone as they left. He ran his hand through his hair, his frustration not hidden. It was clearly written on his face boldly.

He was expecting to secure this job to at least start providing for himself and supporting Olivia since she was the only one, everyone in the family depended on every need and wants in the family.

Again, how was he going to get back home without this job after paying $10 for the fare? His mind raced with several unending thoughts. His face instantly turned pale like a white paper.

This wasn't the first time he was facing this kind of thing.

He tried to shake the whole thought from his mind but it was impossible. The thoughts kept increasing the more.

James then found himself walking slowly to the elevator, his feet heavy with disappointment. His shoulders slumped, and his head hung low, the weight of everything crushing him.

Entering the elevator, James’ trembling hand pressed the ‘L’ button, his face still downcast.

Downstairs, James stepped out of the elevator, still lost in thoughts as he walked, looking frustrated.

But then, he accidentally walked into someone, which caused everyone's face to widen in shock. Their mouths flew open.

James’ mouth also flew open. His eyes broadened in great astonishment and his body began to vibrate in fear. His bladder almost brought out urine, seeing the man that he just stepped on.

His brown envelope instantly fell from his shaky hand to the ground.

The man appeared to be around the age of seventy. He was wearing a gray tailored suit with silk ties in elegant patterns and colors hung around his neck perfectly. His outfit was beautified with high-end polished Oxford shoes that paired perfectly with his outfits.

His simple, elegant yet expensive wristwatch matched wholly with his striking appearance despite his age.

He is the Boss of the company, with six intimidating men in black suits trailing at his back with graceful strides and unsmiling faces.

“Ah, did you just see that? He just stepped upon him.” Someone there muttered, cupping his mouth with her hand.

“He's a dead man.” Another replied, aware the bodyguards weren't going to go friendly with James.

“Blind?” The bodyguards echoed angrily at James in unison. Their faces already tightened and their hands already balled into fists as they took angry steps forward to bounce on James

“I'm sorry, please, don't hurt me. It was all a mistake.” James begged, his lips trembling with fear as he began to step backward with a little starting to form on his forehead.

But the bodyguards weren't listening to him. Their ears at that moment were temporarily deafened to his pleas.

Everyone that was watching the scene started to shake their heads with sympathetic pity towards James.

James, on his side, wished to have a slight space to rush to the old man who he had stepped on to beg for forgiveness but it was already too late.

The bodyguards had already surrounded him and were about to teach him the unforgettable lesson of his life. However, before they could strike James with their clenched fists, a deep and firm voice ordered from the back, “Stop! Don't touch him!”

He then sighed exasperatedly, letting his angry face slowly shift to that of concern. “Olivia?” He called out to his daughter, James’ wife, calmly. “How's the company going?
