Chapter 40
John was at a loss for words. He didn’t know how to respond to Jeffery. His mind was racing, and tension filled the air as they sat in silence, the minutes stretching between them.

Clearing his throat, John put on a firm expression. "What do you mean? What are you talking about?" he asked, feigning ignorance to Jeffery’s question.

"Why are you pretending like you don’t know what I'm talking about? Stop the act already," Jeffery's voice was stern.

It dawned on John that this was Jeffery’s and Gabriel’s plan all along. They must have noticed him eavesdropping and lured him out. He struggled to think of a way out of the situation. Gabriel was still in the car, and John hadn’t yet seen his face.

"I don’t understand what you’re talking about," John stood his ground, wanting to continue pretending he was clueless.

As John spoke, he could feel his heart pounding in his chest, his palms sweating with nerves. He glanced around, taking in the dimly lit alley, the sound of distant traffic echoin
