Chapter 3: I get struck by lightning

"Here," Mister Wigglesworth said to me and handed me my bag and textbook. Like a new package.

"Thanks man,"

He looked hesitant and meek again. "Don't thank me just yet,"

I emerged out of the red car weak in the knees. I opened the doggie pack to vomit.

Dexter looked appalled. He grimaced. "Zack, what happened?"

"He came in sick with while I was out shopping," Mister Wigglesworth's head lowered avoiding his eyes. He fidgeted with his keys and Dexter covered his eyes.

He started to leave and came back to reverse his car. I blinked twice, his muscle car was now the old rusty Volkswagen that I used to see parked in his backyard. "Whoa."

Damn. Why would Frank help me in the first place? "You, Beck, and I are leaving for the hospital tomorrow morning."

I swallowed hard...no matter how many times I visited the doctor, I was still scared of him but I couldn't let dad think I tricked Frank into thinking I was sick too.

...

I laid back in my hammock after that nightmarish experience. We nearly got obliterated by the ruthless aliens. I took Mister Wigglesworth's cure after that checkup and it turned out that the doctor felt that there was nothing wrong with me except the flu.

I took my phone and listened to Mort on voicemail and then I picked up his call.

'Bro, you're never gonna believe it. We're having a physics test on Monday, geez,' I grimaced twisting a pencil.

"We're having a test and I'm not gonna believe that? Come here, come here."

He laughed. Then he said something that caught my attention. As usual.

"I'm worried about my folks, I've never been so traumatized in my entire life." His accent thickened. "I told you aliens exist, it was just a matter of time. We witnessed a laser show."

His statement made me frown, he said so when he was 13 years old, 14, and then it stopped when he met girls.

I broke into sweats and I stirred. "Oh god." I was in pieces. When he touched the box crossed my mind. I would have loved to go back to that point in my life when there were a few things least absurd things to believe in like climate change or reindeer that defied gravity. I was kidding about the first part. I laughed nervously.

There was something about me that I didn't understand...well more than usual but I heard the robotic voice saying nanites.

My eye twitched and I tapped my pen on my book while he talked. Deep down. I wanted to know if that blast had any more side effects.

[ Welcome once again Agent Zack ]

I jumped. "Who is that? Oh no." I covered my ears.

[ Welcome to the Mecha Knight Program ]

[ Your nanites are fully functional ]

"Mecha what? Nanites?" I was wheezing and clutching at my chest feeling lightheaded. I collapsed.

...

Seymour nipped on my face and I pulled up groaning and feeling a bit lighter. I was worried that I was not getting enough sleep. Seymour crouched on the window swishing his tail and he gave a big yowl, I leaned over to glare at the lawn, I might find what was making him fuss. To distract me from whatever that was.

There was a storm coming, there Frank was, he was getting rid of a shrub. Under his trailer in his backyard, I was surprised that he was not using some kind of clever gadget with lasers but shears and a few squirrels were meandering around, feeding on small white clumps on his field. Popcorn.

The sky was getting cloudier and I watched out for the lightning in the sky and thunder. My eyes rounded at the hair on his head rising, seeing the lightning coming at him.

"Mister Wigglesworth!" I hopped outside my window and he looked right at me and dropped the shears when I speared him.

CRACK! BOOM!

The impact of the explosion sent us flying like ragdolls into the trailer.

"Oof, oh crap," Frank pulled up and I rolled back to look at the burning tree holding my shoulder, the squirrels had long scattered and others were watching the big spectacle. I inhaled and exhaled shocked. Blue light crept down my veins and dissipated.

"Are you okay?" He asked me and I shook my head.

"Do I look okay to you? I just ran five blocks and_you've got to tell me what the hell is going on?"

"Oh crap, I thought none of you had these pow_"

My father and some of our neighbours in the community arrived just in time to see the light show.

"Zack...you just saved a life."

"It was just an adrenaline rush really," I said in my defense. Even I don't know what that was myself.

What was he about to say?

"The box shot me. You didn't cure me!??" I hissed with panic in my voice.

"I thought you had a mild gastrointestinal issue."

I followed him past the firetrucks and men in yellow. I tried to keep my voice down while they hosed down the flames.

"No, I was struck by the box."

"There is no cure," He said flatly. "If you two had stayed away from me then_" He sat up when Beck walked in between us. "_ then none_"

"I get it."

"Once they find out you have the key to Zoldor. They will find you, destroy you and everything you hold dearly to your heart and it's my job to train you, until you're ready." His eyebrows came together. He looked comicky.

"Everything I what dearly now? No, you've gotta get this thing off of me, I take it back. I keep hearing voices too." I tugged at my tee-shirt. I was freezing out of my coat and it was not because of the weather. I was scared senseless. I figured this was not what an adult might say to a kid unless it was urgent but it was not time to roll back into my diapers because I made an oopsie. I'm sorry it's a really tough time for me.

"What's this about a Mecha Knight? Who's Zoldor? You're scaring me, Frank." I needed some closure and I did not like the idea of being watched closely by an old man in my frontyard. I heaved a sigh. "My poor mind."

Frank cleared his throat. Rising up. "I'll see you first thing...Someday." He excused himself quietly and saw himself out.
