Chloe snapped, “Excuse me? I’m not that type of woman.”

Her modest response struck a nerve with Lucy. “Oh, so you think you’re better than other women who’ve gotten what they wanted with their looks? Come on, Chloe. You’re gorgeous. Use it to your advantage. Get what your heart desires; we won’t stay young forever, you know.”

Chloe’s resolve was firm. “Sorry, I’m married. Plus, there’s no benefit on earth that could make me lower myself to being a director’s bed warmer.”

Kane felt insulted. As the director of Black Mercury, he had slept with countless women, offering jobs and partnerships in return. But this second-class nobody had the audacity to remain steadfast in her refusal. It was infuriating.

Angrily, he grabbed Chloe’s hand. “Come here!” His eyes were desperate. “Do you have any idea who stood before you? With a single call, I can reduce your entire family to ash. I’m Kane Voss, and everyone in this empire bends to my will. So, what’s it going to be? A night with me, or your family’s heads?”

Chloe trembled, and Lucy smirked.

Then, a voice cut through the tension: low, feral, and commanding.

“You have two seconds to get your hands off my wife,” Orion spoke, his brows furrowed, casting a predatory shadow over his face.

Kane and Lucy turned, giving him a once-over. Seeing his cheap clothes and shoes, everyone—including the bodyguards—burst into laughter. Wait, that's actually her husband? Because of the way he'd silently stood so close to her, they'd assumed he was her driver.

Still reeling from laughter, Kane dipped his hands into his pocket. “Here,” he said, throwing a wad of cash at Orion's face. “I don’t know how you got her, but she's mine now. Go buy yourself some decent clothes or a beer or something. Just get lost.”

Orion's insides burned with rage, but he forced himself to remain composed. If he lost control, Kane's face would already be melting, and his true identity would be exposed in an instant.

Regardless, this arrogant elite needed to be taught a very painful lesson.

“What…” Kane shifted uneasily. “What the hell are you looking at?”

Orion's predatory glare struck fear into him, sending a shiver down his spine. Uncomfortable under the weight of that gaze, Kane pulled Chloe to his side and barked at his bodyguards.

“Beat—beat this man up and throw him out,” he ordered.

The guards affirmed and drew their batons.

By now, employees in the lobby were already pulling out their phones, filming the unfolding drama.

Meanwhile, outside, a fleet of cars pulled up, and Black Mercury's chairman, Marcus, sprang out of his vehicle, hurrying toward the receptionist's desk, breathing heavily.

An impromptu investors' meeting had dragged on longer than Marcus had anticipated, making him late. If his tardiness had somehow kept the General and his wife waiting—or, worse, caused him to miss them entirely—no amount of wealth or apologies from his family could possibly atone for the offense.

Marcus inquired if the couple had arrived yet.

When the receptionist assured him they hadn’t, a wave of relief swept over him. Wasting no time, he hurried to the elevator, intending to contact them. However, he froze mid-step when he noticed a commotion.

His eyes followed the direction of his employees’ cameras, and his breath hitched at the sight: the General, visibly furious, standing on the brink of being attacked.

Marcus’s trembling eyes followed the General’s piercing glare and landed on his younger brother, who was clutching a crying woman who perfectly matched the description of the General’s wife.

In that instant, Marcus felt as though his heart seized.

He pulled out a breathing bag, desperately trying to calm himself and keep from fainting. I’m dead. My family’s dead. Our heads will be taken and displayed as a warning to others, he thought in frantic despair.

Shakingly, he trudged over to the scene.

The bodyguards collectively raised their batons to strike Orion when Marcus Voss’s voice thundered through the lobby. “What the hell are you people doing?”

The sheer force of his roar stopped everyone in their tracks, freezing the scene in an instant.

Kane, hearing his brother’s voice, quickly released Chloe and straightened himself. Marcus Voss, his older brother, was the head of the company with absolute authority. If Marcus found out what he’d been up to, Kane knew he’d be in serious trouble.

Chloe ran back to Orion, who embraced her, wiping away her tears.

Seeing the extent of the damage caused, a desperate plea escaped Marcus’s mouth.

“I’m so sorry, Gen—” he began, but before he could finish, Orion’s glare silenced him. His action, however, stunned everyone because why would the chairman of Black Mercury apologize to nobodies?

Marcus’s eyes darted around the room, his face red. “Didn’t I ask a question?” he yelled. “What the hell happened here?” But no one dared to respond, too afraid of Kane Voss’s wrath.

Marcus was about to yell again when Orion’s voice cut through the silence.

“My wife and I came here to discuss business, but those two tried to take advantage of her.”

Orion revealed Marcus’s eyes bulged.

“That director not only tried to sleep with her but also attempted to buy her and assaulted her.”

Orion’s fiery glare locked onto Marcus, who had gone colorless. “Now, as Black Mercury's chairman, what do you intend to do about this?”

A spasm of fear ran through Marcus’s spine. The general’s words weren’t just a request; they were a threat, and his entire family’s survival depended on how he would handle the situation.

“Brother,” Kane chimed in, laughing, “don’t listen to this street dog.”

Marcus felt his heart skip a beat.

“I merely took an interest in that thing he calls a wife. Besides, they wanted an ex-contract with our company, and as the director, I came here to brush their mediocre proposal aside. Let's kick them out.”

“Yes, that’s what happened. Let’s kick the swines out,” Lucy piped in.

Marcus was quiet, his gaze trained on the floor, his hands resting on his hips, akimbo.

He heaved a sigh before quietly gesturing to a guard, who fearfully handed over his baton.

Smack!

Smack!

Ah!

A hard metal object struck Kane’s stomach, sending him sprawling to the floor.

What!? Did the chairman just hit his own brother?

Because of them?

The air shook with the discussions of the watching employees.

Shifting his gaze to the now-frightened bodyguards, Marcus ordered, “Beat these two until they can’t move, and throw what’s left of them out. Today, I’ve disowned my brother, and they’re permanently banned from stepping foot in Black Mercury.”

“Wait, what?”

Everybody was shocked.

Kane and Lucy’s eyes widened in disbelief.

Kane couldn't even get a word in, before hundreds of hits from batons rained down on him and his mistress, their screams echoing through the hall and stunning the onlookers.

After being beaten nearly unconscious, they were thrown out.

Marcus had defended Orion’s honor, and he could only hope it had earned mercy from the general.

He glanced at Orion, who nodded once, pleased. The chairman breathed a sigh of relief.

Composing himself, he turned to Chloe with a wide smile. “Mrs. Chloe, I sincerely apologize for the behavior of my employees. Please,” he gestured toward the elevator, “allow me to personally oversee your business proposal in my office.”

Chloe hesitated.

What she’d heard of Marcus Voss was that he was a ruthless businessman, capable of single-handedly making or breaking thousands of companies. Even the city’s pillars feared him. Why, then, was someone of his stature being so modest and polite?

What was the catch?

Orion, sensing Chloe's hesitation, gently held her hand. “Hon, don't be afraid. I can tell the chairman’s being sincere. Please, go with him and save our marriage. I'll wait for you in the car.”

Chloe’s hesitation wavered.

Bracing herself, she took a deep breath and followed Marcus.

At the highest floor of the building, Marcus led Chloe to his office.

Chloe was nervous. After all, she was about to pitch a proposal for their puny company, hoping to secure a half-billion-dollar contract with the empire's largest conglomerate—and save her marriage.

She fidgeted nervously, and just as she tried to speak, Marcus spoke first.

“Would Mrs. Chloe prefer her tea with sugar or cinnamon?” Marcus asked abruptly, leaving Chloe flabbergasted.

She watched, astonished, as Black Mercury’s chairman prepared two sets of tea for her, then delivered them with both arms stretched forward.

Noticing Chloe’s business proposal in her hands, Marcus took it and said, “You wanted a half-billion-dollar contract? I could increase it to two billion. Just give the order.” After all, he’d planned to give the deal that initially belonged to the Blackwoods to her.

Chloe’s face dropped. She hadn’t even made her pitch yet, and Marcus Voss was already offering to increase the value of the contract.

Mistaking her silence for dissatisfaction, Marcus quickly added, “Miss Chloe, if two billion isn’t enough, we could make it ten billion. Just give the order.”

Ten billion dollars?

Give the order?

What’s going on?

“No, no, please,” Chloe refused. “The two billion will be fine.” She understood her family's company limitations. If they accepted more than that amount, they’d struggle to meet the demands and likely fail. Two billion would suffice for now.

“Okay,” Marcus nodded.

He called in his secretary, and in no time, Chloe’s signature was on a two-billion-dollar congratulations, four times the amount she’d come here for.

Holding her copy, she was almost in tears. She'd done it. Her marriage was secured.

Before Chloe left, Marcus Voss handed her his contact card. “Mrs. Chloe, please, this is my business card. Call me for anything.”

Marcus Voss was an intelligent man.

He’d avoided speaking about the general throughout the meeting, or the money under Chloe’s name, because he figured Orion probably didn’t want that information out yet.

Outside, Chloe’s legs turned to jelly again, but this time, in a good way. She spotted Orion leaning against the car with Jimmy and cheerfully rushed over to him. “I got it!” she said, jumping into his arms.

“Woah, hon! I knew you could do it.”

Chloe let go. “Hardly. It seemed like the chairman just handed me the opportunity. I don't know... It was almost as if someone had put in a word for me.” Chloe locked eyes with Orion and demanded, “Hon, you did this, didn't you?”
