Esme Crane was familiar with the Explorer's Regiment's three-cornered hunter's hat, which she knew was an adaptation of the broad-brimmed hat, with the sides of the brim folded upwards, originally invented by Spanish soldiers to shield them from the abundant rain of the Flemish rainy season during the war against France.

Paulina did not resist, but let her go, glancing unconsciously at the black cat as she walked out the door.

As we spoke, the three men had reached the front of the dormitory building. The east, west and north buildings were all small two-story buildings, and Esme Crane's dormitory was on the second floor of the east building, the southernmost one. Before entering the dormitory, Doris led Esme Crane to the equipment warehouse on the first floor of the east building to claim the supplies.

Papa Hussey opened the door and leaned against it, but Doris went straight to the rack and began to choose her dress, asking Esme Crane's preference as she did so.
