Esme Crane rubbed her chin, thought the question over, and then shook her head, "That's a very philosophical question, and I can't answer it."

Doris, whose eyes were closed and feeling intently, opened her eyes, a hint of consternation and confusion in them. After a moment, she gathered her statements and said.
