She calculated the distance and the time first, and as she had driven the coachman to venture the short cut through the forest, she judged herself to be ahead of her father. And it was true, the wagon she was riding in had just returned to the gate shortly before two mine watchmen marched up to it from within. Anna hid in the shadows and listened quietly, and could hear the conversation between them.

The room fell silent as a senior police officer finally took his place at the head of the long table. The senior police officer was a middle-aged white man, dressed in a stern police uniform, with a clean shaven face and gleaming brown eyes beneath bushy white eyebrows and a solemn expression. He nodded and saluted the noble lords and old hunters seated at the head of the long table to the left and right, before clearing his throat and calling the meeting to order.

They had been sent specifically to greet her father, and were talking to each other about gossipy rumors of Viscount Grulla
