CHAPTER 48

Romeo opened his tightly shut eyes and to his surprise, nothing was wrong with him. He looked up at Joseph.

"Come on cousin, did you really believe that I would betray you?" Joseph asked as he moved to unfasten the cords that bounded Romeo.

Romeo's emotions surged like a tempest, a whirlwind of relief and bewilderment.

The cords binding him fell away, leaving him free, yet his mind remained entangled in a web of conflicting thoughts.

Relief washed over him as he realized he wasn't facing imminent death. The weight that had pressed on his shoulders were lifted, and a rush of gratitude toward Joseph flooded his conflicted heart. "Cousin, you saved me?" he whispered, the words carrying both disbelief and appreciation.
