Bullied and betrayed

A pained gasp escaped his lips as a heavy kick landed squarely on Dexter's chest.

Huddled in the middle of a group of boys, his arms had gone numb as they had been taking the full brunt of those hits. He had used them to block his face from attacks.

“F**king peasant. Next time, you’d think twice before disgracing me in front of the whole school.” A voice spat out those spiteful words, and Dexter knew the owner of that voice.

It was the man who haunted him for days.

“Elliot. It’s enough. We have to leave here before anyone comes around.” A voice jolted Dexter back to reality. It belonged to Elliot's gang member.

“I still want to beat him. In his next life, he would definitely know how to stay in his place.” Elliot grumbled.

“You can do that later. Remember you have to meet up with Cassie.” Jordan said, trying to coerce Elliot into leaving.

“That bitch? Well, let’s leave the weakling for now. We will see him tomorrow.” Elliot had no choice but to leave.

Dexter's eyes were closed, and when he was about to reach for his glasses when his hand was stomped on, cracking the glasses in the process.

“I, at least, have to leave a little souvenir for poor Dexter to remember me in his dreams.” Elliot voiced out.

The boys burst out into laughter as they walked away, leaving Dexter to his fate.

Dexter held back his tears. He had his dignity.

His lungs tightened as he tried to find his inhaler. He couldn't see anything.

Finally, he found it, and took in a deep breath of air. He didn't do anything to Elliot, Elliot's girlfriend Cassie asked him to help her with her assignment since he was the most intelligent, he accepted and Elliot grew mad at him, why would he talk to his girlfriend?

Dexter stood up, his body was covered with bruises but he didn't care. He needed to go to work.

He walked sluggishly on the road. Bullying had become part of his daily life, he existed in a world where magic was everything. Dexter was nicknamed ‘The Talentless Awakener’ due to his inability to access his Talent, despite him being an Awakener. He had been a grade E Mage all his life, and even went through a series of training to upgrade his rank.

But no, he was still stuck as a grade E Mage with just 1 stat, which was horribly awful. The lowest humanity has recorded was a grade E Mage with at least 15 stats, but Dexter had to break the world record, he was 21 years old and still a useless mage. He was an orphan trying to survive with his little sister, just one year ago he was kicked out of the Mage academy because he was unable to continue paying for his tuition fee, the Mage trainers were sick and tired of him, not just because he wasn't paying his debts but also because he wasn't making any improvement. In Blossom City being a ‘Mage hunter’ was the fastest way to earn you money since monsters are of high value. Their hides could be traded and they also had hidden gems in their heart or stomach, which could be sold for a decent amount. However after he was kicked out of the Mage academy his dreams of becoming a mage hunter and making good money were shattered, he had to attend an ordinary university and also do a part time job to make a living. Guess even in a normal university he still got bullied by regular humans.

Dexter arrived at the shop to see his boss closing up for the day.

"I'm around, Sir." Dexter said.

"You idiot. You are late!" The pot bellied man turned around with a grimace.

"I'm sorry Sir. I was delayed." Dexter tried to make the man understand.

"I don't care about your flimsy excuse. Get these delivered immediately." The man shoved a box of wine into Dexter's arms.

"Sir. I spoke to you about my salary raise." Dexter muttered, looking at the man with the expectancy of a positive response.

"You useless fool. You came late. Yet, you have the audacity to ask for a raise! How shameless can you be?" The fat man bellowed angrily.

"But Sir, I told you about my sick sister." Dexter tried to plead with him. It wasn't his fault he had arrived late.

"You and your sister can go to hell. I'm not wasting hard-earned money on trash like you. Deliver that. If your luck is good, you could get a tip." The man rambled, and shoved Dexter out of the way.

Dexter sighed. If only he was a Mage hunter he would be making millions and being hired by the government and hunter associations to clear dungeons, his situation was so bad that many people didn't even realize he was a Mage, the ones who did had completely forgotten.

He looked to his left where there was a bus stop sign and he realized his delivery bike had been locked.

"So much for running down here." He muttered to himself and walked away.

Dexter took a look at the address, and realized it was a bit far from his location.

He would have to take a cab, but the money he had left was for his sister, Iris' medicine.

"I'd have to walk then. When I get to the shack, I'd apply some balm on the wounds, and skip school for the next day." Dexter smiled to himself.

As long as his sister would be fine, he would be happy.

Dexter arrived at the address soon enough. It was a hotel.

"Delivery for a Mr. Tyler Cross." Dexter said to the guard at the building.

"Where's your identity card?" The guard spat in disgust. This kid looked way tattered to be a delivery boy.

Dexter expected it so he had prepared beforehand.

“Here” he showed him his ID card.

The guard laughed immediately when he saw his stat. “A grade E Mage? 1 stat?” He chuckled.

“Is there a problem with that?” Dexter wasn't having the joke.

“I wouldn't be wearing that if I were you. Oh now I remember you're the world record breaker” he laughed, then continued. “The Talentless Awakener” he laughed even harder.

“That's none of your business”

"I see. Come in. No funny business." Even after seeing Dexter's card. The guard still felt suspicious.

Dexter took out his spare glasses and wore them.

These were the old and tattered glasses he had been wearing during his time at the orphanage.

“I can’t believe these things stood the test of time.” He lightly laughed causing him to clench his side in pain.

The glasses helped him see the room numbers.

Dexter walked to a room, and stopped.

The room had the same number that was placed on the package.

It seemed that the room’s door wasn’t really sound proof, as he could hear the slight giggling and romantic sounds. He could swear that the lady’s voice sounded familiar but he waved it off.

“I must be missing her this badly.” Dexter smiled when he realized that he was just thinking about his girlfriend.

His hand went to rub the necklace on his neck instinctively as he waited for the door to be answered.

Selina had not contacted him in three weeks now and it was very unlike her.

"Maybe she is busy with her studies. I shouldn't be too desperate." Dexter chuckled to himself.

Dexter was about to knock on the door when it suddenly opened, and his eyes suddenly widened, he felt his heart crumbling into a million pieces.
