Chapter 3: “What do I need to do?”

A flare of pain lashed through Dorian’s brain and he hissed, clenching his teeth and going dead rigid in his seat.

“What the fuck dude!”

The system scoffed and Dorian imagined it frowning.

“I am not a human, or a dude. I am a being of infinite possibilities and people are usually more appreciative when they get me y’know. I’m really hard to come by.”

The pain in his brain subsided all at once and Dorian breathed deeply, trying to steady the fast pounding of his heart and his boggled brain.

The thing in his head was real.

~Already established~

And it had a snarky attitude.

A slight chuckle rang out in Dorian’s head and something strange happened. A glass-like screen appeared before him. Almost the same shape and length as a full-length mirror. He couldn’t ignore the fact that it was there because it was. When he moved his head to the side, the large screen moved too.

Golden letters lit up the surface of the screen and words slowly came into focus.

INFINITE SKILLS SYSTEM. BASIC INFO.

CURRENT HOST: DORIAN FLINT.

AGE: TWENTY TWO HUMAN YEARS.

CURRENT STATUS: UNEMPLOYED

~ouch~

STATS:

LOOKS: AVERAGE 40/100

STRENGTH: WEAK 20/100.

~Hey!~

INTELLIGENCE: BASIC. 2/100.

STAMINA: BASIC 3/100.

ENDURANCE: BASIC 20/100.

CHARISMA: LACKING 1/100.

Dorian let the rest of the information be displayed on the screen and he frowned. How could he have more stamina than intelligence? He graduated top of his class!

~You’re a fool if you think you’re half as smart as you can be.~

Dorian opened his mouth to debate that with the system but seeing as the statement rang a bit true, he decided not to. His father hadn’t made any accommodations for him to learn further than he already had.

Compared to some other people who went on to further their education, he had just enough to land him a job, a job he had now lost.

~It’s good you lost that job. I would have been wasted on you if you were there.~

Dorian sighed and diverted his eyes to the blinking screen. There was a lot of information displayed on it and it was a lot to take in. He wasn’t having the best day.

“What does healing mean? Can I heal people?”

The system gave a light scoff.

~Not now at least. You can barely keep yourself alive now. You’re alive thanks to me.~

The sound of gloating in the system’s voice was unmistakable.

“So you’re a system that does what? Heal people?”

The screen blinked twice with a light red glare coming off it.

“Stop degrading me. Okay? I am a Skills system.”

“So you give people skills?”

The system sighed heavily and all the information on the screen was wiped off to display a single word.

SKILL.

“Imagine what your life would be like if you didn’t have to be bad at anything, Dorian Flint.”

For some strange reason, those words struck a deep chord in Dorian. On the level of talents, he didn’t have much, except for trying to work harder than everyone else but that wasn’t a talent was it? He had heard that skills and talents were almost on the same level but He didn’t have a natural affinity for business that men like Gregory did. He didn’t have any talent that could shoot him to fame and fortune. He barely had any notable skills.

~That is where I come in Dorian.~

Dorian sighed. Good to know the system thingy was always listening in on his thoughts. If the system heard that it didn’t indicate, it simply continued in a more melancholy tone.

“I am here to grant you as many skills as you want. With me, you will naturally excel at everything. There will be no need to spend years learning. Do you want to rise to the top in the field of business? unlock the investor skill and I will grant you the skills to turn a penny into a million dollars overnight. Do you want to be the leading force in world innovation and technology? unlock the Inventor skill and I will grant you the knowledge to make time capsules and homes that sprout legs to walk.

Do you want to learn magic?~

Dorian frowned and cleared his throat. The system gave the impression of giving a sheepish smile and continued.

~I might have veered off track there, but do you understand what I’m saying? With me, your life could change. But you will have to work for it.

Each skill set comes with a price. You will have to complete missions and I will have to calibrate your potential based on how well you perform during those missions. Make the right decisions, ally with the right people, and you stand the chance to gain a skill that will shoot you to the top even faster.

The question is though, are you prepared to climb Dorian Flint? Potential is only potential until it’s put into use.

Sometimes the world can be unfair, but with me, each effort you make counts, and it will be rewarded. In one way, or the other.~

~Also I have a shit ton of side benefits~

Dorian felt his shoulders droop slightly as that moment of epiphany got ruined by the system’s side remark. The system was right though.

The world could be unfair sometimes, and people could go every day putting in the work but one small mistake would cost them all the rewards.

If he was going to become someone important, someone who didn’t have to take the fall for others, then he needed to be remarkable. Not just remarkable but extraordinary.

This system could help him do that.

“What do I need to do?”

The glass screen flashed with a golden light and words in block letters appeared in fast succession.

[QUEST: GET A JOB.

LEVEL: EASY.

REWARD: GAIN FIRST POTENTIAL CALIBRATION AND UNLOCK A SKILL.

PENALTY: LOSE ONE LIVER

TIMER: 24: 00: 00.

TIME FLOW: HUMAN HOURS.]

Dorian almost choked on the air he pulled in. Lose one liver?
