Chapter 8: ~System!~

“Do…… you usually…… drive like a maniac?”

The Blacktips were just behind them and right now, Dorian was sure they were going well past the speed limit.

So far it had been thirty minutes since the chase started. The speed his bike was putting out was admirable.

“Hey, pizzacunt! Catch!”

Dorian leaned to the left at the last moment and the projectile whizzed past his ear. A boomcan landed on the bare ground of the expressway and Dorian gritted his teeth in annoyance.

Thankfully this time when the can exploded they were a good distance away from the explosion. The Blacktips had their little locally made explosive explode right behind them and Dorian’s mind sparked with an idea. The crackly voice of his passenger was almost lost in the wind whipping around them.

“They’re going to throw more of those things.”

Dorian nodded both to her and to himself. She certainly wasn’t from around here. She didn’t know what a boomcan was.

~System, I need a good trick!~

The mechanical voice was what replied.

[NEED: IDENTIFIED. TRICK: GRANTED.

TRICK: THE DOUBLE BACKFLIP.]

Double what?

Dorian felt something spark in his eyes and the world seemed to slow down by a lot.

Dorian watched as a person made solely out of golden light rode past on a golden dirt bike in the flash of an eye and up a ramp. The dirt bike went flying into the air and then it happened, the golden rider leaned back sharply, pulling his bike with him as it took a backflip and went higher into the air. One more backflip in had him half-completing the second curve.

The bike came to a full curve at the end of the second backflip and he landed solidly on the earth.

Dorian’s blood went cold.

That was the double backflip.

The world snapped into its normal speed again and almost like the bike had a mind of its own, it sped up. Speeded up faster than its engine should ever allow and the engines of the cars and bikes the Blacktips rode could keep up with.

Dorian felt his pulse spike.

~System!~

The darn system had the guts to sound humored.

~Yes, Host Dorian.~

~I don’t want to do the double backflip! Stop the bike!~

The controls refused to obey him and the system chuckled.

~You NEED to do the double backflip, Dorian Flint. Once the bike has gained enough distance, it will turn around to face the incoming assailants, then you will ride towards them, like a knight in shining armor, and at just the perfect distance, the bike will go up into the air, you will lean back perform the double backflip in the blink of an eye, and finally, finally, complete your mission. CONGRATULATIONS DORIAN!”

“COME BACK  HERE YOU DAMNED FUCKING SYSTEM!”

The bike skidded to a stop and did a U-turn.

Dorian clenched his teeth and glanced back at his passenger. She was already holding on to him tightly enough that he found it a bit difficult to breathe.

The bike’s engine revved menacingly and Dorian muttered a quick prayer as it shot off into the distance.

The girl screamed at the sudden speed.

Dorian let himself lean into the motion and a golden ramp made of dazzling energy appeared in his mind’s eye.

The pizza bike climbed that ramp, Dorian prayed the girl was seated firmly in the seat, and he clenched his legs around the sides of his bike, leaning back as gravity took them up and up, then down in one quick spiral. The double backflip!

The girl squealed when the bike bounced as it landed and the sound of brakes being pulled sharply rang out.

An explosion rocked the highway and Dorian breathed heavily.

Something had exploded back there. The heat from flames was being carried on the wind. The sparse cars around them weren’t moving, everyone knew better than to keep on driving when gangs were on the loose, but he and his passenger were getting farther and farther.

Dorian looked back to see the female crying silently on his back, her arms tightly around his waist and her body shuddering.

His words were lost in the wind as he spoke.

“You’re safe now. We’ve lost them.”

The system immediately beeped to life in his head and two words flashed past Dorian’s eyes.

[MISSION COMPLETED!]

The chuckle Dorian gave was bitter. He rode on, the Blacktips successfully taken care of, and someone in need of saving, saved.

He did it.

Dorian took the girl back to the pizza shop.

Luigi was slightly pissed when he arrived, but his eyebrows furrowed in confusion when he saw the crying girl on his delivery bike.

He asked Dorian to bring her in and after she cried some more and wasn’t shivering from the force of her sobs, she calmed down and relayed her story.

She was kidnapped. Her parents had died in a car crash recently and she was still in mourning. The goons jumped her on the way back from her parent’s graves.

She was beaten and mocked. They wanted her to suffer before they killed her.

Luigi made pasta for her and she accepted it with thanks.

When asked if she had any reliable relatives she could stay with, she nodded and said she would need a phone.

By noontime when Dorian came back from another round of deliveries, she looked better. Luigi nodded at Dorian and she climbed the back of the bike again.

Dorian asked softly.

“Are you sure you’ll be safe?”

There was a proud tilt to her chin as she nodded.

“I know who wanted me dead. I would have spared them before, but not anymore. I have to go back and get justice.”

Something about the tone of her voice told Dorian she wasn’t as simple or weak as she had seemed back at the alley.

He nodded and revved up his engine. The night wind was chilly as they rode to the park she had asked to be taken to.

The park was a pretty public space and a lot of people were in the park, walking around the fountains, holding hands.

Dorian dropped her by the entrance and she took a seat right outside. At the concerned look in his eyes, she offered a small tight smile.

“I’ll be fine Dorian. I mean it. Thank you for saving me.”

Dorian nodded and revved up the engine. He rode off with his conscience sated. She obviously had secrets she wanted to keep.

He didn’t even know her name.

**********************************************************

At the entrance of Ingrid Park, a young lady could be seen seated, prim and proper. People glanced at her as they passed but she paid them no attention.

An attempt to end her life had been made today, and the only reason she survived was a young man riding a pizza bike.

She chuckled.

To think she had trusted her bastard of a fiance.

A sleek black car pulled up on the sidewalk and the eyes of those around almost fell out of their sockets.

A Bugatti Veyron!

The car was worth 1.9 million dollars! Anyone obsessed with the higher class would know this car, and as is usually the case, a lot of the people around could recognize it.

The young lady stood up, crossed the distance, and entered the car without a moment’s hesitation.

No words were exchanged between her and the driver. He simply hit the ignition and set the engine alive in a soft smooth purr.

Somehow it made her remember the violent rev of a pizza bike's engine.
